Well done catching the transmission cooler issue. A LOT of cars have this type of system in them now, including GM and others. It was for emissions reasons - to get the car up to temp quicker. There is a kit from Superior Transmissions that will 'delete' the thermostat and allow immediate fluid flow at start up. You also no longer have to wait to check fluid levels.

Glad to see this, my 01 CVPI is stuffed in a 53 F250 and i had some transmission overheating issues on long trips. Adding an aftermarket cooler and flushing it may fix my problem and its setup just like yours from what ive seen.

Its a workaround video... But good one.. Im planning to install good Trans Cooler on my Grand Marquis 2008..

Thanks for the info but a trucool cooler is much larger and it fix perfectly my temp is now at 120 or so huge difference 👍

By saying ( bypass) you mean compelety removing the stock transmission cooler and connect the hoses with the new aftermarket one directly to the transmission , that's what i do understand and correct me if i am wrong .. I am planning to install the ( hayden 679 ) as a main cooler by removing the stock one , also i am going to add another cooler a (seperate) one to the power steering pump , is my plan going to work or i will get problems ? Mentioning some info : P71 - 2005 Stock cooler is combined between ( Transmission + power steering pump )

this stupid thermostat is totally unnecessary and probably only has a very minimal effect on emissions. If it fails then you might have a ruined transmission. it's disgraceful that they make cars like this. thank you for making this video.

I have a 2003 grand marquis, I been flushing the coolant on. I’ve notice the fans come on immediately as soon as the car is started even when cold. I’m a bit stumped. Temps seem to be Redding properly on ECT via tuner etc. not sure what is causing fans to run all the time.

I’ve got a 2001 crown Vic P71, temp gauge stays at halfway but there’s a red light that flashes when driving, then it just dies out. Any advice?

Interesting. I never knew there was a thermostat for the transmission. Now I’m kind of curious since you just bought it, how much damage was done to the transmission by the previous owner who apparently was not aware of this issue or perhaps that’s why he sold it?

Good stuff. my 2006 GMarquis overheats in the summer sometimes - especially in city traffic. I got a code that indicated that an overheat condition in the pressure sensor was detected. Thinking of a trans flush. question: would this condition (did yours) ever show up on the dash - as in the car was overheating (temp gauge go up)?

I got an interesting issue with mine. She'll only overheat in extended stop and go traffic, such as rush hour traffic for an hour, or if I'm pushing the car hard for whatever the reason may be. If I'm on the open highway, it runs and shifts fine and never overheats and acts fine in normal day to day driving. It's been doing that since I bought it four years ago. I recently drove it down to Orlando, FL from Baltimore, MD with zero issues. Even now, when I'm just going around the Baltimore Metro, as long as I'm not in extended stop and go traffic like during rush hour, it's fine. When it starts to what I'm suspecting is overheating, it acts almost as it doesn't want to shift from gear to gear, but not slipping. The RPMs don't jump or anything. It just doesn't want to go from gear to gear, and when it does, it'll shift hard. It mostly does it between three and four, but also two and three at times. I'm thinking one or more of my solenoids are going bad and I'm thinking of taking a whack at replacing them and doing a fluid and filter change too and see what happens. The two are pretty easy to do, the third looks a little tricky, so I haven't made up my mind yet. I ran the numbers and it's less than $300 for all the parts I need directly from Ford. Worst case scenario, I'll be right where I am now, which is planning on doing a rebuild within the next six to twelve months.

I have a 09 crown vic same color as your 115k miles when I brought it..barely drove it got 120k miles now and I'm experiencing the same thing it didn't do it in winter time but in summer it started..drives good shifts smooth but every once in awhile when I brake to slow down 15mph and give gas it would go as it's in neutral let off and tap gas it's good. Also it started to have a sec delay shifting from park to drive..I see the fluid level was way high so I drained it and add some but I notice light smoke coming out trans dip stick when I was checking it in park..could it be that it's over heating like yours..mines has low idle hrs too..drive good except what I explained...not driving it till I figure it out or get the trans rebuilt..

Do you know if the PCM will throw a CEL lamp on if the transmission is overheating for these cars? I can smell something burning; narrowed it down to failing cat or burning trans fluid. Although, I checked the trans fluid and with 28K miles since my last service, it's still perfectly clear and clean and smells normal. My next step is to hook up ForScan, but just wondering if the CEL lamp comes on. I've put about 50 freeway miles on the car, no trans slip or problems, but smell something burning when idling. I had some data showing the passenger side cat is on its way out, but too much smell to be that.

Do you have a link to the cooler you got?? Think I'm having the same problem with my 07 drives excellent until I've been driving it for a while and fluid gets warm the cooling fan is always running but coolant temp is at 200-212 steady and no a/c on I don't get the slippage you got but the car seems like it gets stuck in limp mode gets stuck in overdrive until I floor it to get to 3rd or 2nd gear gonna have to give this a try
