The "Invitation Rule" is a collection of regional beliefs from the Near East, up through the Caucuses, with a smattering of North African tradition that holds that an invited guest is under the protection of the host, which will include defending them until death. This seemed to bleed (no pun intended) over into the vampire mythology, but twisted. They then concoct reasons for this according to their own traditions, such as in certain areas, homes were always blessed before occupation, thus the home was sacred. Only the master of the house would be able to invite others. In other cases where the Catholic church wasn't present, they asserted that it was a spiritual energy produced by the family that kept out evil spirits (thus vampires). This rule wasn't universal, but is most commonly found where honor is a very real part of the culture. edit - Almost forgot about garlic. Ancient cultures knew very well the benefits of garlic, especially for the blood. It also had "magical" healing abilities, likely due to the fact that it has antimicrobial properties that even stand up to modern standards. It's used in many concoctions and poultices for any range of ailments and often worked. Thus, it was believed to ward off evil spirits (again the term "vampire" is a modern concept and many evil spirits have been retroactively defined as vampires, as long as they hold the same base qualities).

That's fascinating, I love that it has somewhat formal "rules" to the culture its really cool. Makes Vampires come off more royal and somewhat to be looked up to and respected? I also love that garlic is somewhat rooted into scientific logic yet still works so well as a fantasy/science crossover. Thank you for the lore!! 💙

The character of Peter Vincent, Katie, is played by Roddy McDowell, who's best known for his role as a talking chimp in 4 of the PLANET OF THE APES films from the early 1970s. The character's name is a combination of Peter Cushing, who played Dr Van Helsing in several Hammer vampire films, and Vincent Price, a famous horror star of classic Hollywood.

The iconic vampire makeup design was created by special effects artist Richard Edlund, who is known for his work on films like "Alien" and "Star Wars." The makeup process involved applying layers of latex and foam to create Jerry's distinctive features, including his pointed ears, nose, and lips. Chris Sarandon, who played Jerry, had to wear the makeup for several hours a day, which made it challenging for him to perform. The makeup was also quite hot, which made it uncomfortable for Sarandon. In an interview with Makeup Magazine, special effects artist Richard Edlund discussed his experience working on "Fright Night." He noted that: "Chris Sarandon was a great collaborator. He had very little experience with makeup before 'Fright Night,' but he was willing to learn and experiment. We worked together to create a look that was both eerie and alluring." Hey, Katie, I saw your recent post about some of your current health issues, as well as some previous posts. I wish you the very best of luck with that. I'll be thinking about you.

Everyone always recommend Dead & Loving It as a fun vampire movie. I recommend *Love At First Bite* as a silly, fun vampire movie. I'm also a big fan of older classic monster movies like Creature From The Black Lagoon or any of the older Dracula, Frankenstein and Wolfman movies. Lon Chaney, Jr was a master at practical makeup in the 40's and I love his Wolfman makeup.

The special effects in this movie are better than any special effects are better than any cgi that you are likely to find today.. Jerry's friend was a ghoul.. While not quite a vampire he was given special powers in order to protect Jerry while he slept during the day.

It's not mentioned enough how great the soundtrack to this movie is. One of the all-time best IMO. Also, Part 2 is just as good as the first, if not better in some ways. However, for some reason, it's hard to find it anywhere these days. There's also a really great vampire TV series from the early 90's called "Forever Knight". Not related to Fright Night, but definitely worth checking out!

I’m honestly not sure which version I love more. This or the remake. The original has amazing special effects, it’s legitimately scary, and Roddy McDowell is so good in the role. While the remake has a great soundtrack, and Colin Ferrell & David Tennant absolutely CRUSHING IT in their respective forms. Ferrell as Jerry is instantly off-putting and sleazy, while Tennant is so goddamn funny in the role, everything he says makes me laugh

Glad to see you back doing more reactions and happy you enjoyed this movie so much. It's one of my all time favorite horror movies. I love how it stays true to all the vampire tropes while being playful with it at the same time. Here's a bit of trivia for you, Jerry's bat was originally designed for Ghostbusters as the first ghost they meet at the library, but it was deemed to be too scary. So Richard Edlund was able to use the prop for this movie, just one year later! P.S. The first House movie came out around the same time, and that one is an unsung classic as far as I'm concerned, doing much the same thing with the Haunted House trope as this did with vampires. :)

Great reaction! So glad you finally got to see this classic. It is the perfect blend of horror, comedy, and drama. For more vampires, I suggest 1979's Dracula starring Frank Langella. It follows the classic vampire lore (cape, dressed in black, very serious). Or...1992's "Bram Stoker's Dracula", directed by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Gary Oldman. It is a master director totally having fun with the form while still treating it seriously. Finally, I recommend 2022's "Interview with the Vampire" series. It is a vampiric masterpiece that completely captures the essence of the novel and Anne Rice's more realistic treatment of vampires (Her novels make you believe they have existed for eons, and even better, they make you want to be one.)

Hi Katie another enjoyable reaction to another great vampire film, Peter Vincent is named after horror icons Sir Peter Cushing and Vincent Price, they wanted Price to play the role himself but by the time of making the film he had been so typecast that he refused to do anymore horror films, Also the character from Gremlins 2 that you were talking about, hes actually based on Al Lewis's portrayal of Grampa Munster from the old sixties T.V series called The Munsters and not the character from this film, Anyway I'm hoping that you will react to Bram Stokers Dracula starring Gary Oldman, for me it's one of the best Dracula films ever made.

Apparently the reason vampires can't enter homes without permission is because they're evil and the victim has to willingly allow evil to enter their hearts and hearth. As for garlic it's because vampirism was thought to be a disease and garlic has a sulfur compound called allicin which is used in antibiotics. That's what google says anyways, I was curious too An underrated (I think) vampire movie is George Ramero's Martin

So, how The Dresden Files explains the whole "can't enter without permission" thing is that the threshold of a home is basically a magical barrier born of the life energies and familial bonds of those who live within. It acts as a physical barrier against supernatural creatures, whose only way around it is to be invited in, thus having the barrier lowered for them by the unwitting inhabitants.
