I finally got round to repairing my front forks and changing the gaskets supporting the headlamp brackets.
I took a quick ride up to Clifton in Bristol, parked up and had a little chat about turning 50 next year. It got deep...

I was 52 in 2019 and did my CBT. Rediscovered love of bikes. Did DAS straight away. Joined IAM and loved it now I am a National Observer training others for Advanced test. Acting Headteacher last year and decided not to continue. Early retirement. Re trained as motorcycle instructor and now deliver CBTs and ERS. DAS soon. Got my Masters test in June. Loving life and the massive change. Feel 40 again. My wife of 30 years is fully supportive and my soul mate. After 35 years in education she has also retrained as a counsellor. Perhaps to help me🤣 I am also now a Mental Health First Aider and with Mental Health Motorbike. Couldn’t have done it earlier as I needed a pension but I say do it as soon as you can. My three boys are all independent and employed now so responsibilities are much less.

This is a huge life pivot. Just goes to show that it is possible. Sounds like an amazing job teaching aspiring bikers to ride safely. With you riding bikes so much you're the last person in need of counselling! Haha.

I think I have been having a midlife crisis for the last 50 years! I am now 75, widowed with two grown-up sons and three grandkids. When my wife was diagnosed with stage four cancer in 2017, the possibility of her going into care filled us with dread. Especially the fact that it could cost up to £1,600 PER WEEK! She decided that we should just spend her savings. No argument from me. We bought a new Mazda, and I purchased a 1997 VFR. I have had many bikes over the years, the first one I bought new in 1966. Sadly, my wife passed away in April 2023, peacefully at home. Last October, in a moment of madness, I bought a 2019 Triumph Bobber, with only 1700 miles on the clock to add to my collection. Now that the weather has improved, I am getting out on the bikes at last. I know a gentleman in his 80s who still rides, which gives me hope. Everybody out there, ride safe.

Just stumbled across your channel and this video definitely struck a chord. Rediscovered my passion for motorcycles after a 20 year break 3 years ago at 48. Great vid. I've been riding since I was 16, and now I'm on the verge of turning 60!! How did that happen? Been married to the same woman since 1991. Kids are now grown up. My wife very unexpectedly told me she was going to do her motorcycle test back in 2011 when our oldest lad did his. What a brilliant decision that turned out to be. We've done so many exciting trips together and even run our little bike related KZfaq channel together. Biggest decision now is when do you stop working? When have you saved enough to retire but still have a great life? How many more fit active years do you still have? One thing's for sure, everything feels better when riding a motorcycle.
@thebristolthunderbird
@thebristolthunderbird 2 ай бұрын
That's very true mate. Everything does feel better when you're riding. It's a very effective therapy. I guess the answer to those questions will be different for everyone. The thing I think about most is whether I have time and the freedom to choose how much I do. I'm not sure I'd be so good at doing nothing all day, that isn't retirement for me, it's more about the freedom, time and space to feel like I have control. I know I'll get to the point when I don't want to be locked into a daily grind anymore. Be interesting to thrash this stuff out with a bunch of similar aged guys. Might be a helpful thing to do .

55 years old, 34th wedding anniversary coming up this summer. I have a 2007 HD Dyna and just bought a 2023 Honda CB500X last fall that I love. I’ve never owned 2 bikes at the same time, but love the different riding styles. I sought out a position at work a couple levels lower than the one I left in order to reduce stress and enjoy the work I do, at the stage making the most money isn’t necessary. Our youngest has 2 more years of university and then we’ll see what’s next. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and insights into your life. We only get one shot at this, and it isn’t very long (my wife’s sister just passed away 4 weeks ago of cancer at 61, that’s way too young!). Be good, love those around you, look for the joy in the everyday.

Hi nice video and chat (not many people want deep conversations) I’m 55, in my early /mid 40s I cleared my mind of all the nonsense I had taken in over the years and decided to become my true self my politics were turned on their head and my prejudices were removed from all thoughts. At 48 I became fully vegan (fished most of my life even owned rifles ) Theirs nothing better than being nice to all without constant contradiction. Never been away from bikes since young teenager but stopped with the fast ones when children came along then off road/enduro then scooters and now back with a big road bike finally! Bristol based myself Cheers

Cave looks great. You know a space is working well when you can just sit still and take it in. I’m turning 50 in July. Last 28 years of marriage and raising four daughters has flashed by. It’s definitely got me stuck in my head the last while. I’m a lucky man, but there’s no escaping the mental work this time of life brings on. You’re spot on about relationships. It’s about being committed, and no doubt that plenty of two wheel therapy is good medicine. Music is on pitch as always.

Mid life crisis is the day you wake up and realize that you really aren’t going live forever and you better do those things you’ve wanted to do before you die. Im 71 and I managed to not freak out but some of my buddies went crazy and got divorced, bought a Corvette or a yacht, that they couldn’t afford, another left his family for a 19 year old. Who eventually dumped him for a younger guy. Ouch. Breathe. Try not to self destruct. Pace yourself. Good luck. Mid Life Crisis makes sense to the guy living it, even tough everyone else thinks he’s lost his mind.😎👍

Hi Matt, good video. Each to their own but personally I'm enjoying mid life. Your absolutely right the kids move on but that gives you opportunity that may not have previously been there. You get to realise its not meant to be with some people and that's fine. It's a crowded island, we're not all going to think the same. As long as you can look back knowing you did your best for family and friends then it's time to look forward to new experiences, be they on two wheels or elsewhere. Now that's nothing to feel guilty over, is it? Keep up the great mental health awareness, ride safe buddy

I’ll be 43 this year, so I’m not quite at the point to be able to comment on the mid-life crisis with any credibility. You’re absolutely right about people going off the deep end, though. I have family members that never got out of their MLC, and are essentially 70-year-old teenagers. It’s not a good place to be, but it’s been an effective cautionary tale for me. I wish my garage was uncluttered like your cave. I’m too much of an over thinker so haven’t been decisive enough to have had a midlife crisis although have had my ups and downs in our relationship. I guess it depends on your tolerance of accepting your life as it is and going along the route of least resistance which is probably what I have done along with many others.

Great video mate, and I see myself in a lot of the things you said…I’m in my 7th midlife crisis by now and will probably never get out of it either… I’m 61 working on getting my license to ride the bike and will do that accompanied by my wife Lilian who is way younger than me 🤣Anyway I desperately try to keep in good shape as I am a drummer too and have to keep the rhythm up you know…I found out after my burnout in 2017 that I’m not invincible and that I’m just another human being with all its flaws and weaknesses… I try not to put too much energy in negative things or people anymore because it just drains me empty…. we try to realize our dreams together and set the same goals and that’s easier when you have a partner who has the same mindset and interests as me… we moved to Sweden in early 2006 and live our lives the way we think is best for us in the first place. And doing good to others is the best way. I do my job the best I can after the burnout but have to accept that I am not the same anymore and never will be again but I can live with that and I’m quite open about that that those who need to know my shortcomings understand. Being open is the key to accepting myself as I am. I hope people will open up to you on your channel and we can create a community to share our thoughts and help each other 👍 Keep’m coming those videos mate 😊

53 this year. I got married for the first time when I was 48. At the time I thought it was all good but I now know it was for the wrong reasons. Now I feel trapped in something I don't want to be in, partly out of not wanting to let her down, and partly because I don't think she'd cope on her own. Problem is I'm not going to live as I want to while having to consider someone else. Should have stayed single, sounds selfish but just being honest.

Mate, this sounds like a really hard situation with lots of emotion involved of course. I do echo what the other guys have said here, a relationship that feels broken can turn a bit toxic if not attended to in some way, not good for either of you. Getting married at 48 is also a major thing to do as we are pretty much entrenched in our ways by now eh? If this was me I would be asking myself some serious questions like; 1. Why did I want this in the first place and has that desire changed? 2. Has something changed in me? 3. Do I feel something has changed with my wife? 4. Am I being honest with my wife and myself? 5. Does this look at all like a pattern in my life that will just go full circle again at some point? I do think it's worth putting the work into at least asking some questions and being brutally honest with her and yourself. it might be that it doesn't work out, sometimes that is the outcome. All the best mate, this is a tough one.

In regards to your kids not needing you and the mrs, they will. I’m 36, two small kids. Don’t know what I’d do without my parents.
