FTF, EP 10: Kawasaki Mule 4010 Diesel - dead throttle pedal fix!

Howdy folks. We're back at it with the Fast Tip Friday videos (at least for now). Today we'll be looking at our 2012 Kawasaki Mule 4010 Trans4x4 Diesel once again, this time with a brand new issue that started up out of the blue: a completely dead throttle pedal. The cable was attached properly and the throttle valve was moving, but there was zero throttle response. As it turns out, a restriction in the primer pump was the culprit. If you're having the same issue, hopefully this video will help you figure it out.

Old vid but it a briggs n stratton diesel with marketing agreement to dehutsue . Parts are simple to get under briggs. With that great engine. . If I recall right the model number for the briggs is 58447 I think.

Do you know if this would for for the mule 4000. I work on an ostrich farm and the mule is important for feeding the birds. It would crank but wouldn't rev up and then would die. And then won't crank up again. Any tips on what the problem could be

It's certainly possible. Is your mule powered by the 3cyl diesel engine? I'm not sure how the fuel filter is set up on the gas engine models, but any kind of restriction or blockage in the fuel filter/lines (no matter if gasoline or diesel) could cause bogging and poor idle/stalling. I would definitely check into it.

How do you prime the system after you blow out your lines? I thought you said the plunger only primes the filter. But if it will prime the pump.. do you need the injectors loose to let air escape? Do you need to have the throttle open? Thanks

As long as there is fuel in the filter and lines, the lift pump inside the injection pump should self-prime the remainder of the system. I just pump the primer bulb on top of the filter housing until it gets firm and won't depress anymore, which means you have fuel all the way up to the injection pump. You absolutely can crack the injectors loose if you like and prime it that way, but I've never found it to be necessary.

@@AllThingsMech okay thanks, on this machine the plunger doesn't seem to ever want to stiffen much, and when it does it forces fuel out of the water release. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm not seeing white smoke when I crank either..

@@AllThingsMech I bled the 10 mil valve on top and got fuel to sometimes squirt but most times dribble then I pump with it loose. Then I've pumped with, one at a time, injectors loose but got nothing. I pressurized the fuel tank and cranked with the peddle down and got fuel to start coming out of the injectors.. tightened them, and still no life. Just did the head gasket, valve adjustment, filters, belt.. and I got air in the lines whenever I did the fuel filter change. Wouldn't start after over heating when I got it.. been trying to find life for weeks in her.. even changed out a bad starter relay when I went from crank no start to no crank one day.. it's been fun. Would you ever suggest using starter fluid on this size diesel? Thanks

@@EkonRekon sometimes those things can be a real pain. I know its a little messy but I would pull the filter off completely and take the water drain off. Check the threads for damage and the drain itself for cracks or other damage. If it's not damaged and it's tight on the filter it absolutely shouldn't be leaking. If fuel can make it out when you push the primer, air can make it into the system when you crank and make it really tough to start. Also make sure your glow plugs are tight and you aren't losing compression anywhere else.

@@EkonRekon oh man, sounds a lot like ours! 🤣 We've been through several head gaskets and most recently a whole new cylinder head so I feel your pain. If you're careful you can use a little ether to see if she at least tries to kick off for you, but I'd disconnect your glow plug relay first just to be safe.
