First of all, Barev bro! ❤️💙🧡 Secondly, idk, I am one of those people with a deep nostalgia for 1999-2004 music. There were a lot of nu-metal and post-grunge bangers that carried a special vibe. It really resonated with our generation, the last ones to spent our childhood without smartphones and an internet that’s everywhere and in everything. That album had a lot of elements of that vibe. As for the snare, ringy snares were just a thing back then. I started being more bothered by only after everyone started complaining about it.

I'm so done with people bitching about Lars' drumming. Go and listen to Justice then tell me that Lars is a shit drummer. His drumming there is very technical, very complex but at the same time he doesn't overplay, he serves the song but doesn't dominate it. Compared to someone like Dave Lombaro (who is an awsome drummer I hasten to add) and Slayer, the drumming often dominates the song and personally I don't like that, I don't like any one instrument dominating a song. It is fair to say that he can be a bit lazy, especially live these days but he is categorically not a shit drummer.

The stupid thing is that, St Anger is 100 % what it was intended to be. Doesn't mean we have to like it, but... it fulfills its mission perfectly. And for what the album is, I don't know if any other sound would even fit it. One thing that crossed my mind just now is that, maybe St Anger is a bit of a parody of numetal. I'm probably wrong but... I dunno.

It's always interesting. Suddenly one of these top honchos walks out and says Lars is a briliant drummer. Which he is! Unpolished and with a rubber band for a metronome. But that aside he's one of the smartest drummers out there. The big mistake people make when they try to emulate his style is that, they forget to listen to the guitar.

Frantic sounds very very good live. If you havent heard live then you dont know how good it is. I could rather hear songs from st anger than some one million times played sad but true. Dirty window and st anger are also live a million times better than on the album and are sort of redone. All within my hands is also like turned from shit to gold on S&M2. The unnamed feeling is also good and please dont listen to this album or anything else from some telephone or some cheap bluetooth speakers, everything sounds shit if thats from where you listen. And yes, there are many many better songs from the older albums and also from the newer ones. Hetfields voice also sounds much better the last 10 years compared to the time this album was made. Keep going strong Metallica🤘

I bought the album on day 1 of release, 9am. Put the CD in my portable CD player. First impression, what is this she-it, what is this terrible sound quality, why do the drums sound like bins. I skipped every single track, and I never fully listened to it. With Hammett not playing a single solo and Newsted not on the bass, it was a half arsed Metallica album. I later gave it away for free. I never bought anything Metallica again, but a friend sent me a bootleg live. Halfway through the gig Hetfield has a rant about who's a real Metallica fan, and who's a so-so Metallica fan. Sellouts since the black album, and I cured the problem by listening to other bands instead.

Yep, sounds about right. My friend and I, pre-ordered it, and we could not have been more disappointed. Mind you, we had just got the new (at the time) Static X album and Slipknot's Iowa had just come out, so we had good music to compare it to... it was just not a good album. We subsequently never bought or listened to any "New Metallica" again. Sometimes, people should just retire and stop dragging a dead horse around. I mean, these guys can't even play their songs live and have to alter them to make them "easier". There's plenty of other music to listen to besides Shitallica.

A lot people here saying “it needs to be remixed/remastered”. A new mix won’t change the awful snare sound, the terrible guitar tone, the sloppy performances, the terrible Hetfield vocal performance, and the poor songwriting. You can spray perfume on a turd, but it will still stink regardless. This album is a lost cause. Death Magnetic was a step in the right direction. Then, came up with hardwired which is a mixed bag. Now, with 72 seasons they dropped the ball once again.

Those are not even the same snare sound. I get what you're getting at, they're the same style of snare, Ringy. But that grungy type of snare requires a balance. Go too far into the ringy territory and it becomes annoying, and sounds like shit. Things are never black and white. It's not the fact that it's ringy that makes it bad. It's bad because it pushes it way too far. Also, black hole sun is a waaaay slower song than something like ST Anger, so there's so much more space between snare hits. BUT even then, if black hole sun actually had the snare on ST Anger (song) it would 100% have a detrimental impact on the quality of the song, and you would see people complain about it.

@LETSpeakTRUTH

@@drivingwheel9101 I listened to both back to back before making the comment, just to be 100% sure. So I am indeed confident that they are not the same. Same style. Not as similar as you think they are. Lars can say "I want the snare sound from BHS" I can say the same thing when making a song. "I want the black album snare" doesn't mean I'll get it. Also, just through the laws of physics and the technology at the time, those two snares are not 1:1 replications of each other. They're different no matter how you slice it, unless Lars somehow got a hold of snare samples created from Black hole sun's snare, which we already know he didn't.

Especially in the Seek and Destroy and Jump in the Fire main riffs, the Four Horsemen Sweet Home Alabama segment, and Pulling Teeth. St. Anger is the And Justice For All of the 21st century. They both have terrible production, terrible drums, the guitars sound like nails on a chalkboard, and too many of the tracks drag too long and are frankly just boring. Nothing wrong with long tracks if they stay interesting, but with St. Anger and Justice the longer tracks could be trimmed by several minutes and nothing of value would be lost.
