Tiling PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS Day by day issues when building a tile shower. In this video I explain some of the issues that are common on a jobsite when building a shower, I also provide answers and explain what needs to be done to fix the problems, and why they have to be addressed. Tile layout is one of the most important things to get right when tiling a shower. If you don't put some thought into it and plan out the best possible tile layout for your tile installation, be it a wall floor or whatever the tile surface may be, you could end up with tile slivers or undesirable cuts. Never start in a corner and just start tiling, always take measurements, and dry lay some tile to use as a reference when planning your layout. In this video I try to explain how i planned the layout of this large shower area to avoid small sliver cuts in the corner and where the tile ends at the edge of the shower. I also explain How I figured out what the tile cuts would be at the ceiling, floor knee wall and floating corner seat. Hexagon shaped tiles were very popular years ago, but faded from use for quite a long time, except for mosaic hex tiles. Today it seem hexagonal tiles are coming back and are again quite popular, they are now available in all sizes and formats, including very large and elongated hex tiles. It has to be noted that these shape tiles can be tricky to install, because they have six sides rather than four, so you now have to pay attention to keeping additional grout lines even in size. There are more joints to keep flat and lippage free, more lines that have to be kept aligned and true. In this video I go through the entire process from laying out the floor to the installation, I also show a mistake I made that can happen very easily, even to someone that has over 40 years of experience in the trade. the tile is installed on Ditra Heat Membrane over a plywood subfloor. any reason you didnt match the grain continuing from back wall to knee wall? you did it on the other side but not there and it looks like you could have.. also couldnt you have built out the tiles on the inside of curb to get rid of the little ripper on the 2x2? beautiful work btw, love seeing someone who takes pride in what they do.

How do you go about establishing the height dimension for the side partition wall for the shower? I need to do something similar to make use of an extra 4"-6" of wasted floor space between current vanity and shower opening, so the next vanity can be butted and so I can extend my shower a little wider. This video series has been great for a clear how-to and overview on building the shower!

Sal if we don’t know the problems we have no idea what your solutions are. Example you say “take time to get the best layout possible” but what is the best layout? What should we look for or try to achieve with a layout to make it the best possible?

I watched your video on a curbless shower. You had shower tile that were square but pretty thick. You needed to add some membrane to make it flush. What if the shower tile is really thin though? A layer of membrane isn’t enough.

Please address how to fix rows when they start to get out of level. Sal you’re the only guy I’ve found who talks about rechecking them for level every so often, even if using a ledger. Mine is somehow 1/4” higher on the one side right now :/ I’d like to correct it 1/16” at a time in 4 rows but how? Thanks love your content.

Use wedges in conjunction with your spacers to widen the grout line a bit over several rows.

Sal after floor porcelain tile laid with expansion gap ready for grout, do I grout in that expansion gap so tile baseboard has something to sit on, or do I also put spacers under the baseboard tile pieces then caulk under and grout between? I’m having a problem since one wall where past wood baseboard sat is not level all the way around and trying to bring it up to the level line and cover drywall line will make either for different size tile or different size grout lines. What do you recommend? I could grout all the way to wall then put spacers to bring tile up to laser level line (Ty Sal) but then will have obvious big and little space of grout. Maybe put tile right on tile and just make baseboard pieces large enough to come up to line all the way around with no floor to baseboard tile spacing, then just caulk after?

You don't want to fill the expansion gap with grout, has to remain open, or fill it with a backer rod and silicone. Then also silicone the floor to wall grout line.
