Brilliant presentation, thank you. I descend from Alexander Gordon of Aberdeen, captured at Worcester and transported to New England as an indentured servant. Sorry about invading, but very glad he survived.

A large number of Scots were taken to the fens of Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk to dig drainage ditches. A great many was also transported to the American Tabacco plantations. We will have to do a future video on the Prisoners taken at Worcester, so please keep a look out.

Richard Leader "purchased" them and later purchased the sawmill in NH where my ancestors went. He got caught doing some shady deals and went to Barbados and all the POWs received their land grants early and were released

Hi Paul, I thoroughly enjoyed your talk on the Battle of Worcester Very well presented and I love your enthusiasm for your subject. It was particularly interesting to me because before moving to Crete I lived in the Worcestershire area and worked at the Archaeology dept in Droitwich as you know.Looking forward to your next talk. Stay safe during these trying times.

Is it correct that we don,t know for certain where all the dead from both sides were buried?
@discoverhistory78183 жыл бұрын
Thats right. We have some burials around the 4th September recorded in Parish churchyards (usually recorded as 'Unknown person' or words to that effect). A Mass Burial pit or more than one is likely but we have no knowledge where this is located. Possibly on the River Meadow to the West and another outside of the City Walls to the East. They would have received a Christian burial of some description so there is no need to specifically go out and find them.

Thank you. I have at least 2 Scottish ancestors who were sent to America as POWs from this battle. David Hamilton and Richard Jackson. Hamilton worked in a sawmill at Salmon Falls in New Hampshire and married Richard Jackson's daughter Anna. They were all killed many years later during the Indian massacres.

The land has several owners and you will need to check with the Battlefields Trust also. The location is Archaeologicaly very sensitive.

@@discoverhistory7818 thank you. I was being a bit deceptive, I am friends with the land owner of Powick site. There have been several people metal detecting without authority and have said that people have told them on here they can go as it is public land. Even if it was you can’t do it without permission from relative authorities. I know that the land owner originally didn’t mind however due to the land being left in a mess they are not so willing to give permission. Thank you for your response.
@discoverhistory78183 жыл бұрын
@@Duke-Slinger we have reported about 5 people metal detecting on the Battlefield over the years. There's been a big increase over the lockdown period. We and a few friends watch the Battlefield site closely. This includes Perry Wood and Cherry Orchard.

@@Duke-Slinger did you say they were told they could metal detect from 'Discover History' or on here...... meaning KZfaq in general?
@Duke-Slinger3 жыл бұрын
Well I have been told that people have been on channels about Worcester in general and the battle, they have then been told they are more than welcome to go and detect when ever they want. I am doing a bit of fishing at the moment through the comments etc to try and put people right. I think it’s most likely people in the comments making out they are more important than they are. We caught one man and all he said was “Mike on KZfaq said I can come” I only know the land owner of Powick and up to the seven bridge. Thanks for getting back to me I shall continue my hunt.

Ah The Marley Banks in Perry Woods is what the old London Road has been called by locals for years. King's School have a fete on August Bank Holiday Monday (most) years and you can go to Castle Mound then. A hundred feet from Castle Mound (inside the Cathedral) is the burial place of famous King John of Magna Carta and in fable and largely fabricated story - Robin Hood and Ivanhoe. The last time I went was August 1997 - just happened to be the day after Princes Diana died.
@discoverhistory78182 ай бұрын
That's right. Sadly, the King's School fete is no more. I think it ended a few years ago now. We work at the King's School from time to time and I think the last fete was almost 10 years ago I think.

Battle started at 6am why that time ?
@discoverhistory7818 Жыл бұрын
The thunder storm had ended and Cromwell ordered the advance. It may have coincided with a flood tide. The Severn was tidal and Cromwell had brought two boat bridges up river. A flood tide would held push them against the current.
