Make/Model: Toyota Camry
Year: 2005 (Generation 5, 2003-2006)
Engine: 2.4L Inline 4 - 2AZFE
Problem: Oil was leaking around engine and spark plug well #3 was filled with oil. This caused misfire in cylinder #3 and violent shaking while driving.
Solution: Replace valve cover gasket, ensuring it is properly secured around grooves of valve cover and tightened down to appropriate torque specs (8 ft-lbs). Consider replacing affected spark plug and coil.
Parts Used:

Nicely done. For the hoses I usually heat them up with a hair dryer for easier removal. I have to replace my gasket this week as I too have a massive oil and coolant leak.

Never stick a screwdriver into any gasket space. You gouge or scrape the cover, or the cylinder head surface bad enough, you'll have a permanent leak, unless you resurface

I have 3 Camrys. I know all the ins and outs. If I can’t figure something out, my buddy has been a master tech for Toyota for 32 years. He’s ranked by Toyota as their #3 mechanic in the country. Next time you disconnect the battery, just hook it back up and drive it the ECU will relearn the throttle positions regardless.

== PLEASE READ, BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS - This video misses a few VERY CRUCIAL steps, not shown in this video!!!!! == Thank you! This "tutorial" video has a VERY important step unmentioned, and therefore missing in its execution. You will have your oil leaks again, sooner rather than later (depends how much you use this car), because you missed that one VERY crucial step before reinstalling the valve cover. The step I'm referring to is -- putting a dab of "Seal Packing, Black" (as Toyota likes to call it), on the spot where the timing chain cover meets the cylinder head. If you look closely, there's a joint where these two meet (mating point), and it is very, VERY crucial that you put a dab of that Seal Packing at that joint, one dab in front and one at the rear, so as to prevent oil from seeping out from that point. In fact, this step is so crucial and important, that the genuine Toyota Camry Service Manual has a whole page devoted to the mention of this step, complete with diagrans, arrows where the dabs go, to the part number of the Seal Packing (Black - Originally was #08826-00080, but now superseded by #00295-00103), and the warning note if not done. Had you read or properly consulted each step before attempting this and making a video on it, you would've known NOT to miss that VERY crucial step. But now since you missed that step, you have created the "weakest link in the chain" (as the proverb goes!), and have thereby passed-on this wrong (missing) information onto to all your viewers....instead of making sure they learn about that crucial step and do NOT install the way you have WITHOUT that Seal Packing bridging and sealing that CRUCIAL joint. For such important jobs, which may seem simple and easy to you and few others, it's best practice to consult the Genuine Toyota Service Manual, and not "online forums", which are full of missing and/or wrong procedural information/s. Also, before sticking-in that FelPro gasket into its groove, a dab of 3M Super Gasket Adhesive #08008 (Black or Yellow, doesn't matter) in the groove channel is a VERY good idea, because oftentimes when inverting the cover, during final install, the gasket gets dislodged and the gasket does not seat properly when the cover is pressed-fit, the gasket kinda twists, especially in the middle circular parts. (Scotty has done a video on this common mishap that mechanics overlook). This dislodging of the gasket internally cannot be noticed and all seems well-seated, where in fact it isn't, thereby creating oil leaks again, rendering the job dismally-executed, unsuccessful and requiring a re-do. And so, as an ounce of prevention, the use of the 3M Adhesive is a VERY good idea, preventing the gasket from coming loose when you flip the cover to finally install. Again, there is VERY high probability the gasket can get dislodged from the groove when flipping-over the cover to install, and so the Adhesive just ensures that doesn't happen. It's also "peace of mind", apart from being a "professionally done job" in the end :) And what's the idea of buying a FelPro gasket, when the OEM Toyota gasket is just a dollar or two more from the Genuine Toyota Parts Dept.? Such crucial parts need to be replaced with genuine Toyota OEM parts, no matter how many "forum posts" say it's fine to use an aftermarket FelPro gasket. What you have used is made of Silicone, whereas the Genuine Toyota Gasket is made of rubber. There's a reason why Toyota insists on using rubber, I won't go into technical details, but in short, it is to do with tensile pliability, thermal expansion, etc. Camry engines are super reliable and designed to last a very long time, because they have been designed to be so, and so using parts that match the original EXACTLY is super important to say the least. And so, you have, in this job, created TWO weak links. All those who are going to attempt the Valve Cover Gasket after watching this video, please remember to include the missing steps not shown in this video, if you don't want an unprofessionally-executed job. And Khan XO, please let this comment remain here, so others can benefit from this crucial information. This isn't a criticism of your video/work, it's just pointing to the missing and/or unmentioned steps of great importance. Thanks.

Awesome video! My wife was my extra pair of hands and we successfully replaced the gasket! I broke two plastic clips on my coils though. The two on the driver's side were a pain so I unplugged them. The locking clips were dry rotted I guess. There's still a lot of tension on the connection so hopefully they're good. 😒

Good video.Thanks! I just did this today on my 2005 camry and I overtorqued my 3rd spark plug bolt as well! The crazy thing is that I was using my torque wrench when I sheared off the bolt, the aluminum of the valve cover was too soft to stop the bolt. Thinking of picking a bolt up from home depot or the junk yard tomorrow.

I need to do this since I had my mechanic recently do some work on my 2005 Camry 4 cylinder LE and his primary task was to replace an AC line that developed a leak. In the process he replaced my spark plugs and I watched him do this. He mentioned that my car had developed a leaky valve cover gasket and needed to be replaced. This video shows what appears to be a relatively non complex job which involves removing some 10 bolts that hold the head gasket to the head and removing and replacing the top engine cover. We are talking about a $ 15.00 - 20.00 gasket cost and the time to do it ....or....pay a mechanic his labor time to do what appears to be a half an hours worth of time, some break parts cleaner and elbow grease

It seems that the biggest problem is not being able to raise the cover straight up and lower it straight down because of the alternator wiring harness interfering. I plan to disconnect the alternator wiring from the alternator and swing the whole harness up and out of the way. I will disconnect the battery negative lead first like Khan did.

@khan_xo
@khan_xo 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The one we used fit really snug after being seated and wouldn’t fall out on its own, the only thing was the awkward angle when putting the cover back on. This made it so that the gasket could potentially have been poked at so we just made sure to check underneath a few times as we put the cover back on.

NEVER put a metal screwdriver to pry off your valve cover. You could easily mar the metal which is machined to perfection to make sure it seats properly. It is machined perfectly flat, using a screwdriver could easily mess up your valve cover and you will need a new one. Anyone watching this, DONT do that!

It happened to my brother's 06 camry when he disconnected just one terminal from the battery and it would stall out and die. I think if you disconnect both the positive and the negative terminal it won't give you that problem. I do that method and I never had that problem in my 05 camry.

Stephen Mcdonald yup just a few months shy of 2 years! A thing to note, the gasket gets “molded” to seal the valve cover so if anything was wrong you’d notice it within the first weekish. Usually you just have to make sure you tighten the screws down close enough to the right torque specs and you’re good.
