Welcome back to Game Scoop!, IGN's weekly video game talk show. It's the last episode of this console generation! This week your Omega Cops -- Daemon Hatfield, Tina Amini, Sam Claiborn, and Justin Davis -- are discussing the contenders for Game of the Generation. Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption II, God of War, Overwatch, and so much more. They also have thoughts on Watch Dogs Legion, Spider-Man Miles Morales, Pikmin 3, and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. The music in this episode is from the original Metal Gear.

Umm, Fire Emblem Three Houses anyone? If you name Mario+Rabbids in “strategies” (which is fair, it’s great), this one at least deserves a mention as one of the best strategies this gen. Also there’s a renaissance of fighting games - Killer Instinct reboot, Street Fighter V (yes, it was broken at the start, but got good), Soul Calibur VI, Injustice 2, DragonBall FighterZ, Samurai Shodown, Dead or Alive 6 etc.

MGS5 doesn't get enough love in general...because the story definitely didn't feel complete enough, and because it's story was compared to every other Metal Gear. But the gameplay and the progression unlocking new cool things and the base building, oh yeah and did I mention the gameplay, the freaking awesome gameplay lol. all of it was fantastic. In my top 10 for sure this gen, maybe even top five.

Persona 5: Royal would probably be the best JRPG of the generation actually. IGN even gave it a 10. The art style, the interface, the music and the deep themes about the self, the human psyche and collective unconscious would put it above any other.

They're obviously doing a good job with the situation, but man I can't wait to get back to podcast's like these getting filmed in person. It's not even the audio or video quality that I miss. The chemistry and interactions between everyone are so much better when they are in person. And not them specifically, I think that goes for all people in general lol. Bad voice acting, and the story wasn't even told very well. Everything else was great, but God of War was far better in every aspect graphics, gameplay, story. Also didn't help that Zelda had choppy framerates at times, and the Devine beasts were not as great as past Zelda dungeons.

I’d say Zelda is definitely very close for me. The lack of a deep story doesn’t bother me, the main story is in the world, the places you visit, the abandoned towns, the valleys through mountains, it really made the world feel real to me. I found the weapon system awesome as well, made you have to adjust you’re play style on the fly instead of just spamming the same ultra powered sword all the time. I get why people would be frustrated by it though.

Genre questions cause a lot of debate, but I feel that the simplest way to assess a genre is based on what actions are necessary to progress through the game. Solving puzzles in an intangible environment, puzzle game. Solving puzzles in a tangible environment, adventure game. Complete high dexterity maneuvers, action game. Both of those last two, action-adventure game. Character and narrative decisions, RPG. Everything else is a combination of those base genre's or a further more specific focus. Such as a sports game is just an action game with a specific focus on the sport simulation.

I get what you are trying to do but I feel it does not always work in more cases than it would. For example you and I witcher 3 story line is going to be 99.99% the same thing. There are no RPGs where the games story morphs greatly based narrative decisions on the level of something like Detroit become human Does that make it an RPG? Just trying to see where you head is at.

So this is a month late. But my game of the Generation is Witcher: Wild Hunt. Nothing has come close for me in terms of story characters and experience. Close second is God of War. Its a masterpiece in gaming. It took a character that was 1 dimensional and made him 3 dimensional and told a heartwarming story. Then Horizon Zero Dawn. Just a cool action adventure game with a very intriguing plot to say the least. I also wanna give a special shout out to Days Gone. I had such a great timr with that game and honestly loved every second of it. Bring on a sequel!

Damon, play Hollow Knight, definitely the best Metroidvania of this generation. My game of the generation was The Last of Us part 2. I think everything about that game from the combat scenarios, animations, environments performances, narrative, and how it tackles maniacal addiction and trauma are exquisitely done. My favorite JRPGs were Persona 5, Nier Automata and Dragon Quest 11. My favorite RPGs were Dragon Age Inquisition, Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, and X-com 2 with War of the Chosen. My other favorite action adventures were Death Stranding, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Gears 5, and Rise of the Tomb Raider. And last, my favorite FPSs were Wolfenstein 1 and 2, Prey, and Doom. And I do think last gen was better only because this gen felt like an extension of last gen, where games were just the bigger and better versions of last gen games. Like I think Dragon Age: Origins is better than Inquisition, but Inquisition is bigger and prettier, but really good in it's own right. (Witcher 3 is better than 2 though)

@@shubhmayc I don't need any comebacks, I already explained why it's the game of the generation. I guess your comprehension is slow and you didn't understand that. Also, narratively, the pregnant Doctor asked and wanted to go on the mission, barely was allowed to, and in a world with infected and a city War going on, would be expected to be more forcefully capable and active while pregnant. So apparently you Platinuming it, which again speaks to it's quality, doesn't mean that you were able to correctly pick up on the narrative. I also Platinumed it, so no, u didn't play it more than me.

Remasters shouldn't count- meaning GTA V, TLoU1, etc are out. So, personally, it's gotta be Red Dead Redemption 2. Though, I more than understand if others deem Witcher 3. For me, Western just hooks me in more than Fantasy (Wizardry & stuff) as a genre or cartoony aesthetics (Nintendo), and the interactivity of RDR2's World was Immersion on steroids. Additionally, didn't subscribe to the whole Energy drink, ADD criticism of RDR2's pacing. Personally, I thought it added to the 19th century aspect within its Immersion. Just hope Rockstar keeps developing their 1st-person execution. Personally, am expecting Cyberpunk 2077 to eclipse my love for RDR2. Used to prefer 3rd-person games, but since 2014, 3rd-person just usually feels too wonky.

Great show, enjoyed watching as always! Just wanted to comment on the Watch Dogs portion of the show. I've really enjoyed playing through this game so far, I wouldn't call it amazing but agree with the sentiment that its an 8/10. Full disclosure, I'm an American living in London for the past 2 years, so I love being able to explore central London and visit famous landmarks like St Paul's Cathedral, the Shard, City Hall and Big Ben. To me, the visuals are really solid, particularly at night in the rain when the city lights come to life. I get the sense that some of the negativity around this game stems from the disconnection with the city and British culture and with London as a central character, I can understand how that'd lead to a less than stellar experience. I've got a particular affinity for London having lived here, so I think that's a contributing factor to my enjoyment, but I will say that here in the UK you will actually here people saying "brill" as slang for "brilliant", so some of the discontent might just be from cultural disconnect! My 2p :D

Shame to hear Watchdogs Legion is a letdown. I was hyped for the game; I thought it was finally going to be the good Watchdogs game.

Action/Adventure should be broken up into finer categories because there are too many big good games in that one category.

Is it an unwritten rule SOMEONE has to have lousy video each week lol. Usually it's Sam. This week Justin looks like he's on a galaxy S4 after licking the camera lens :-) Speaking of Justin.... wtf is that on his arm? Since when does he have a tattoo?! What other ink do we not know about (Sam unbuttons his shirt and has an 18" punisher tattoo :-D ). Any ink games related? We won't ask Max... I've seen him get a 20.00 tattoo at a Con a few years back :-)

Outer Wilds is my best of the generation, but also of my life. That game leaves such an incredible impact on me. I can't even think about it without tearing up.

I’ve not played Watch Dogs Legion yet so can’t say if the writing is any good or not in general, but “brill” is a pretty common word here in England, and has been since probably before I was born (I’m 37), so that’s probably not a very fair criticism to level at the game!

God of War is the game of the generation, graphics, story and gameplay were nearly perfect. Breath of the Wild is a close second, but that game had flaws like its bad voice acting, the story wasn't told very well. God of War was literally perfect in every aspect of game design.

In my opinion, it has poor enemy variety, when all you really do is fight enemies. And even worse: little to no boss variety, most bosses are copied and/or humanoid. Apart from that I really love it tho.
