I think the most straightforward response is a series of questions: 1) Why does the new CoS Marshal cost $45? 2) How does this topic relate to the steady exodus of creatives from GW? 3) How is a company with record-high stocks also noted for having an informal ceiling on the pay of creatives and staff despite the length of service or quality of service these employees provide? 4) How are products like boarding actions presented as a new feature of the game, and then almost no discernable steps are made to incorporate them into upcoming products. 5) Why is the upcoming kill team release essentially recycled terrain and creatively limited posed models. Both are being charged according to their current pricing plan. 6) How do the executive compensation plans impact the ability or the willingness of the company to pay more competitive and fair wages to their employees. 7) Why are the new jump assault intercessors charged $60 for only 5? 8) Why does GW still charge full price to the current rulebook for 10th edition 40k when so many things in it have changed? 9) What is the relationship between GW and content producers that receive special access to products? How does this influence responses to company decisions and create a culture of false positivity? 10) Why is Fulgrim $270? Like we can trade stories back and forth about positive memories. I still have my first GW mini, a metal Chaplain from back in 2003. It was a tough part of my life, and mini-wargaming has been a relative mainstay for me, I can credit the hobby with helping me become a thoughtful, creative, and caring person. That said, it was the hobby that did for me. GW is either a company or a community, and there is significant and purposeful, confusion about this. GW won't take me out fishing, but they will continue fishing money out of my wallet for underdeveloped products, poor treatment of their employees, and providing further examples of how treating table top games as a live service isn't a viable business plan. Also, just so people know, all those late 8th and 9th edition books they released that messed up game flow, like the Ad-Mech books and Psychic Awakening, were prolly their attempt at Season Passes. This isn't a live service game.

The only thing I have to say about that is that not everyone buys the minis to play. Quite a number buy them, paint them, and display them. They killed the Astartes youtube series. They censored all video creators just trying to create free hype for their game. They scammed people for the App. I'm Australian and have lost both kidneys to pay for miniatures because they increase prices based on exchange rate but never adjust when the rate goes down, making them hilariously inflated. Every rules iteration has been worse. They still pump and dump with overpowered rules for new models to sell well and then adjust them down 4 months later with the cash in hand. They killed Warhammer Fantasy. They are symbolic of a company captured by marketers and MBA's in leadership that is committed to slashing and burning for every dollar. You guys are paid influencers for them, it's not the same relationship we have. Oh and they sold me an Astra Militarum rulebook for $80 AUD that expired 2 months later as the edition changed and it couldn't be used anymore.

Yeah, unless you're a passionate tabletop fan or a collector. If they don't do something about the accessibility of the game then it will eventually die out.
@dew7972

While I agree price is quite an issue, I do understand why. The process of starting with an inspiration, now luckily using computer programming to create a detailed 3d miniature, then taking that 3d miniature and breaking it down into each component in a sprue that makes sense(usually), along with directions in proper assembly, then finally creating a mold for the breakdown, manufacturing location, some kind of quality control checks, then packaging, building maintenance, advertising, and general overhead. All come down to the price we pay. While I feel like the usual bell curve of when you start to make money off the investment put into it is and can be reached, it’s probably an insanely staggering number. Even though we just see it as buying plastic and being expensive plastic at that. I do understand the annoyance of price but in this world, everything keeps going up, you never go back in price. Even if it would roll back some, the price would always remain the same.

As some have pointed out, I'm not sure what the goal of the video was. I, too, enjoy the hobby, but that doesn't mean I can't dislike some of the directions GW is heading. My grievances are 'all of the above' and then some. However, a recent annoyance of mine is that, in 40K 10th edition, it seems the rules writers didn't learn a thing from 9th edition and we started with some of the same issues with armies that we had previously. Also, on a personal note, it feels like most of the armies lost flavor and I don't really feel a difference playing one army to another. Hating on GW doesn't necessarily have to be for the sake of hate. I think a lot of fans want these things heard because we love the hobby so much, and we'd like for GW to listen.

I mean, that's because hate gets clicks on youtube. "Brief history of GW" would've gotten maybe 10% of the viewership. Titling your video "Why does everyone hate GW?" instead gets more viewership, not to mention more *retention* across the duration of the video, because it's explicitly designed to feel like it's "Going somewhere," because the topic being covered isn't the title. Years ago, I painted a Dark Angel army and they released Primaris and now the product line is slowly being replaced. After that, I painted an Armies of Nagash army that was a little bit of everything. They split my army into several factions (Nighthaunt, Vampires etc) and now the army is unplayable. Way back, I collected Warhammer fantasy and they killed the line. Now, it's coming back but they've changed the base size so classic players can't use their old collections. When I spend hundreds of hours on something, I want that collection to be good for a lifetime. This isn't Magic: The Gathering sets. This is a hobby that takes a lot of time and sweat. Tabletop Tactics wouldn't get this because they probably don't paint their own collections, they commission them out.

You don’t really go anywhere with it except with an admission of nostalgia being a hell of a drug. If this was really a video on why people hate GW (and not just clickbait) the least you could have done is made a comprehensive list of the offenses GW has committed and not just what you have personally disliked, answering the question- “Why does everyone hate Games Workshop” Instead this just coming off as consume product, and just ignore all their faults proposition. This was a weird video and even a little bit after watching it, I am not quite certain what exactly was the argument it was trying to make. Or rather I perhaps I do, I just don't if it succeeded at it. While I completely agree that there is overt hostility over minor things often and people are far too stubborn in their views on what is the obviously 'right' choice, there was an odd implication here that if you like your hobby, just be happy about it and don't complain about. I mean, yes, there was that list of personal dislikes, but then it went on how awesome a company GW is and all that in the end. And again, I don't think that is their opinion, I've listened to their podcast discussions, but I also don't really know what the point here was aside from a love letter to Games Workshop for giving this gift to the world. Also connecting the increased stock prices as evidence of them doing something right is certainly a choice. I guess the issue is for me is that this is a complicated topic and I do think it would have benefitted from being a longer discussion about what makes expressed criticism reasonable and when do we veer into overt negativity. When trying to a short video like this where half of it is the history of Games Workshop which doesn't have really anything to do with the topic, it's just hard to really succeed in saying anything.

I decided to get up to speed with the new 10th edition Nid models. Went into GW site, put 3 neurolictors, a deathleaper and a biovore in the basket. Basket said 200 euros. This is 200 euros for five (5) infantry models. Not units, models. Happily closed the basket and never shopped. Ye, GW can go suck it.

Boys boys boys boys boys... WHY have you made this video? Is it a serious attempt to understand why so many consumers hate games workshop, or an attempt to distract from and diminish the feeling in the community? In other words: is this a genuine conversation, or gaslighting? See, one of the first issues is obviously Tabletop Tactics has an NDA with GW... so everything you say comes from the position of having your bread buttered and you know the price from straying off script. Pointing at Games Workshops vast profits, because computer games have certainly massively boosted their earnings on top of the covid bonus creating hobbyists, is not the win you think it is. If the company is doing so well, why is it delivering so poorly? Why is it no damn assault marines for Horus Heresy after an entire year, but we get a replacement for what we already had, bolter marines, and a demon primarch useless to anyone without an emperors children army, and this is supposed to be customer service? There are countless examples, but I think the selling useless cardboard with 10th edition was a real low point, as was the state of the game on release, and I find myself asking the question: WHO ACTUALLY WANTED 10th EDITION IN THE FIRST PLACE? Gw has big problems. There rules are beyond a mess, they are a joke, their games system is too convuluted to be playtestable by their own admission and horrifically dull to watch on you-tube. For years they have coasted on the minis and seen the rules as just something that gives people an excuse to buy models. But they are being out competed now and 3D printing is coming on so fast it will surely be massively more popular by the end of the decade. Games Workshop would not be the first company to wither on the vine of its own success, I point to Atari just before the bust because suddenly the consumers wouldnt put up with being ripped off and fobbed off anymore: massive profits? Potentially a massive bubble, but if GW did go pop, SO WHAT? Their rules will circulate online and the market place is full of models to play them with: Thats surely GW's biggest fear: its captive audience coming to realise, they just dont need them anymore.... Maybe they should show some humility, and some respect, and start delivering high quality good value products again, like they used to, in the "golden age" you boys spent 80% of this video waxxing lyrical about... some of us really WERE there, if you grasped that, you would understand even more thoroughly why GW has pissed so many gamers off... it let us DOWN...

People hate Games Workshop because they are not a good company. They make good models, but they are not a good company. They inflate prices far beyond reasonable metrics, they are tone deaf to the issues surrounding their game, they are heavy-handed in any of their IP management decisions and time and time again they blunder their way through releases. In regards to the prices.. the stockists make about 40 to 50 points on a model kit when they sell it at GW site prices. So a $90 model costs around $50 to get into the store; and GW is still making a profit off of that model when sold to stockists, so that means that to make and ship the model the actual worth of the kit should be around $20 to $25. When sold on the website, they bypass the stockists and make pure profit and charge the buyer for shipping (unless they purchase enough to waive it). Their saving grace has been the Warhammer name and that there no centralized location to get "not-warhammer" STLs to print at home.

Wow, a guy who is nostalgic for Warhammer and owes his lively hood from being in the good graces of GW is overly positive, who would've guessed. I love their IPs but Games Workshop clearly has zero respect for their fanbase, they increase the prices of plastic yearly, remove units from the game, take down fan made content of their IP from websites such as KZfaq and just have a general sense of not caring for their customers and doing whatever it takes to increase profits above all else, and you brush off all criticsm despite it being perfectly valid. This video has put a bad taste in my mouth, and judging from most over comments I am not alone in this, I won't be watching anymore of your content going forward.

It's true they put out the best minis out there (been playing since the late 80's) and the most successful game company , but they have an unsustainable growth model ... how many price hikes can we take? Why does everyone hate Games Workshop? Well, there's the insistence of putting everything they can behind a paywall. The inconsistent rules and game balance. The price creep for plastic miniatures, and the ever increasing barrier to entry. Their brutal and aggressive litigation practices. Their opposition to third-party parts, despite this supposedly being a "creative" hobby. Their refusal to credit their artists and creative staff properly. Their insidious use of FOMO, especially with their website "promotions" which don't really offer any discounts. Speaking of their website, the recent changes are awful. And that's just for starters.

Very weird and dismissive video. I understand what you mean when you criticize social media's overuse of hate-as-content but no one wants Games Workshop to be 'perfect' when they're asking them to credit their artists, reduce their exorbitant prices or stop exploiting their dedicated fanbase. If anything this video is far more guilty of the 'hate-as-content' trend since you didn't barely spoke about the topic at hand, instead favoring to run through Games Workshops' history for 10 of the 13 minutes. I understand you love the hobby and don't like seeing so many people being overly critical of it but saying stuff like 'it was as so much worse 2 decades ago so why not ignore the bad and focus on the good' is really, really missing the point of criticism in the first place.

I'm surprised that I have yet to see a comment addressing my issue. My problem is that since the middle of 9th edition, there has been a steady increase in monopose kits replacing the old modular ones. The CSM possessed being one of them. I love the new models, they're very gorgeous and highly detailed. But running a squad of 10 brings up a pattern of copy/paste repetition (with minimal arm/head swaps sometimes) that really bugs me. I didn't mind this with cultists because the large mobs of infantry gave the squads enough bodies to split up the duplicates and create the illusion of model diversity. It's a really hard thing to ignore with bigger models like space marines. Not to mention that GW is charging more for less modular models that leave you off with less spare bits to store away for later projects/kitbashes.

I have no clue what the idea behind this was. Are you trying to remind us to enjoy our own hobby? Is this an underhanded attempt to quell and invalidate people's feelings towards GW? I just can't tell, but it reeks of survivorship bias. A lot of fans were left behind for many reasons. Those who don't enjoy the current edition run out of people to play older ones with, their hobby dies out for them. Those who can't afford the two price hikes per year can't afford new miniatures, so their collection stagnates and the hobby gets stale. Those who don't like the new models have their old ones rotated out of the lore and rules, forcefully pushed out of what they loved. Those who don't want to fund a shitty and disrepctful company like GW don't want to hand over for it anymore, so they have to leave too. Just because you guys still enjoy your hobby and have the ability to continue, doesn't mean everyone else can too. There's a lot who can't return for any number of reasons, they lost their reason to socialise, they lost their peace with it, they lost their passion for it, and it wasn't their choice. It's not nice, and it leaves a really sour taste in the mouth when someone in a respected position in the community such as yourselves come out with a video that seems to imply you're shushing this all away because you're enjoying it - so everyone else must be too. You can be happy about the hobby all you like, but many people have every right not to be, I really hope this isn't your take and that I misunderstood this strange, strange video.

issues with the game itself aside, i think its easy for UK presenters to somewhat gloss over the price because they arent subjected to the same price gouging as other regions. the united states is games workshops largest market, comprising approximately 43% of their total market according to the 2022 data. the united states minimum wage is just over 40% lower than the UKs when converted to british pounds. games workshop products however are 20-30% more expensive even when converted in currency. the new lioness of the parch kit in the UK is 90 pounds. in the US it is $150. $150 converted to pounds is 123 british pounds, so you can see how these prices are grossly inflated in their largest market which also has significantly lower average wages.

A quick chat and then an autograph in said book and l was happy. Meeting the Forget World team and getting them to sign the new opus. The much missed Alan Bligh. Chatting with Warwick Kinrade. Games Workshop have lost the human touch. They still make the best models out there but it's not just about that. Aside from the obvious pricing issues, the rules have gone more and more towards tournament play, and it's a horrendously unbalanced game, meaning if you want to win, there are objectively "good" and "bad" choices for your army, which is kind of shitty if you want to play the game but also want to collect and paint some cool miniatures. I was always more of a play for fun player with some mates, but that's become increasingly difficult with the rise of netlists and meta choices being the "default" way to play, so unless you've already got a friend or multiple friends you can play against who also play for fun and don't just look up the current meta list for their army, you either resign yourself to getting flattened every time you play against randoms in your FLGS, or you quit. I'd love to pick up the hobby again but it's just not fun any more, and the prices are increasingly unjustifiable, especially if you're going to have to keep buying more and newer minis to keep up with the meta.

You can't go out and say that their price politics are horrendous. Their rules change faster as they can print the books. They cut off any artists and creators on KZfaq. They invented a way through sub-systems like warcry to produce miniatures without bothering about the rules for the main games. (they give them bad rules afterwards) Anyway, GW is going the same route like Magic the Gathering and Blizzard(World of Warcraft): Milk the customers as much as possible with minimum effort and apologise afterwards with a "We heard you community...". Don't get me wrong, I really love Warhammer and I'm in the hobby half my life but this hobby is nothing without the community and it's time to give the community something back. Like free rules, free armybuilder and support for artists and content creators on KZfaq.

Can't risk losing that sweet sweet GW dolla. GW hold the key to this channel's success - if they pull their support, this channel is at a huge disadvantage compared to others that have it, so all the while they're suckling at GW's teat they can't afford to say anything too negative in case they upset GW to the point where they refuse to partner with them any more.

This is the first video that you have produced that leaves me... meh... i think you may be too deep in your bubble to realise gw is kicking people out of the hobby. Prices go up but WAY WORSE than that is that they make armies you spend hooours building and painting obsolete. They followed the meta and forgot this is a hobby not an e-sport.

I think the title of this video should have been a history of Games Workshop, instead of why all the hate. It really didn't go into the many scandals or troubles the company has had over its lifetime. It's fine to just say ignore the hate but I think it's another to brush its troubles under the rug in a video that is supposedly about that history. Again I don't mind the stay positive and have fun message but this felt disenjenus.

I think most people aren't just haters for the sake of it, they love the creative side of Games Workshop and a lot of the designers, artists, lore and other stuff that goes into it, they just hate the corporate side and some of the stupid decisions they make. Admittedly some of the things he lists in this video that he hates are similar to what I think too. But I think objective negativity serves a purpose, because while there's the Commissar Gamzas of the world just being salty for clicks, most people just want their hobby to be better and enough backlash keeps companies like GW in line and (hopefully) gives us improvements.

Just have a look on 10th BETA edition. The game is not finished and must be patched hardly for months. The last codices from 9th Edition lasted only some weeks. 45€ for one book with rules for 3 months? really? Changing the colours or scale is also not consumer friendly. So the Primaris range and killing the old range. Though they saw it coming after Indomitus and went a step back with Terminators and Scouts. Same for the Aeldari.

Hard to enjoy the hobby when the company responsible for supplying the rules by which 99% of people play the game invalidates tons of models with new editions, that you also have to pay for via codexes and rule books. Not to mention they are models that have love put into them, only to be forced into replacing them with sterile, overpriced new kits because you cannot actually use that loadout, or the scale of the model changed, or the model itself simply no longer exists in the rule books. I think the fact that even after watching this video the majority of comments are negative of GW show that it's far more than people being pessimistic, GW is not the same company anymore.

I really hate to type this out and I know I'm going to come off super toxic and generic KZfaq comment but I really prefer the old tabletop tactics. Your production quality has went through the roof but the overall enjoyment and genuine feel has plummeted. You've shaved all enjoyment out of watching you guys play the game just because it cuts down on the runtime. I miss the two and a half 3 hour games where the first 20 to 30 minutes was everybody sitting around going over their list and just ripping each other. As far as the video goes I'm not even going to watch it but based on the comments here it's almost more of the same kind of dribble with you guys have been putting out for the past year where you are defending a billion dollar corporation I get it, I'd sell out too because I know that y'all need money just like anyone else and you all have families and careers and stuff and while I'm happy to see you guys reach another level I don't like the outcome. Just full corpo generic YTers now

My opinion is that it would have been good to see at least a mention or more discussion of things that I've seen that genuinely contribute to the dislike some folks have for some of GW's decisions/business practices. Like many people, I find myself truly enjoying the hobby and admiring the work of GW's creative teams, but disliking many of GW's customer-hostile business approaches and policies. I've seen people point to a lot of factors that contribute collectively to the "everyone hates GW" impression, including: The bungled cancellation of Warhammer Fantasy and the initial lackluster launch of Age of Sigmar; the increasing expense of fielding many AoS and 40K armies on a point per GW retail $ basis; instituting paywalls over basic army index information; the general exorbitant cost of GW's products; abandoning expensive and popular boxed games (i.e., try to find the expansion sets for Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress, for example); introducing excessive amounts of new product for some factions (Space Marines) while starving others (AdMech, White Scars, Drukhari, etc.); not crediting or promoting their creatives; poorly written, unbalanced, and inadequately play-tested army indexes and unit datasheets for several factions, etc.; how they handled fan-created content (i.e., removing Astartes from KZfaq and putting the creator's planned future content on the back burner, etc.); launching Warhammer+ with a very thin library and slowly dribbling out meager amounts of content, etc. I'm sure I'm missing some, but those are a few of the issues I've seen folks mention about GW.

Most of the 'hate' at GW is directed at prices, and paying big bucks for rules which are very poorly tested, resulting in books which are obsolete on release. This video is a little tone deaf considering TTT get sent most products for free from GW.
