That is Hollywood telling you EXACTLY how the US government, "law" enforcement and the "justice" system works. And I'm pretty sure that it is the same way in most of the world, people with dirt in their past are easier to control, and the people that are willing to go to the most immoral extremes, the most refined, evil, high-IQ psychopaths, are the most likely to seize power. Even in the, supposedly fair and open, petty popularity contests of the oh-so-precious "democracy".

the best part is Boss tweed was brought down eventually thanks to the work of a political cartoonist, Thomas Nast, who drew political cartoons of him leading him to say, "I don't care what people say about me, most people can't read, but damn those pictures!"

In real life, Bill "The Butcher" Poole (Bill Cutting in the film) was rabidly anti-Irish and generally against Tammany Hall as it favored the Irish more. His political rival and a gang himself was John Morrisey, and they exchanged a blow or two many times.

zbt518 Coming from a history major in college, every movie based on historical events is going to either be glamorized or altered in some way. But, those movies may just inspire people to dig for the whole true story (it's happened to me a few times) and then they can enjoy the movie and be able to point out why something in it is inaccurate.

When Tweed says that all of the civic duties are best kept within what he likes to call the Tammany family, why do you think he likes to refer to Tammany Hall as a family?
@hus390

Sisyphus27 It's called Tammany Society. It's HQ was called Tammany Hall. So when he says Tammany family, he means members of the organization who gets elected to political offices and then in returns, direct inflated public spending to their cronies who kickback to them by briebs and money laundering.

@@ianoleary1420 I guess, the American Revolution was a myth too. What even are you guys?? 🤣 If you look at actual historical accounts, it's something that can literally be tracked. Hell, we can go to congressional library and look at policies dating as far back as the early 1800s. You will see, the party switch is not myth. It's a legitimate thing. Sorry to break that to you. You don't have to take my word for it either. People study it, dedicate their lives to understanding and analyzing it and comparing it to political changes in other countries. The movie isn't even about the Civil War. It's mostly about Bill's belief that Irish immigrants were flooding to America to re-shape the culture. The movie just happens to include events and dialogue about the Civil War because it's set in that time period.
