Probably one of the best novel series in 40k. Even though it's essentially just Sharpe in the 40k universe.

If I had the funding, I’d make a game of them similar to the old rainbow six shooters like Vegas 2, with the ability to switch between first and third person.

A 30" blade isn't all that unrealistic, as long as its your main weapon. I prefer my 24" blade, but I have them up to 40" which I can still use pretty effectively. I suppose it depends on what you want out of me, speep or power? You should also look at what each person's body and skills are catered to. Im short, lean and fast, so a shorter blade suits me better. My friend is very tall, large and strong, so giving him something like a polearm makes him more effective. He has reach and power that I don't have, but I have speed and mobility he doesn't have. I wish he was more dedicated to his training, but im no one to talk.
