First look at the new KAHAKKA day packs from SAVOTTA
In this video I go over both the 15L and 25L versions, offering my initial impression, a few tips, as well as comparing KAHAKKA 25 to JÄÄKÄRI M, incorporating ASKARE hip pack and more.
Packs are now available directly from SAVOTTA if you are in EU. www.savotta.fi
If you are in US or Canada, they are now available from Varusteleka

I do, however, wish you would’ve shown us how it zips down the front of it to see how much it opens up because that’s one of the things about savotta that I don’t like. Is that packs don’t zip down so you can access them from the side of the front.
@EnduranceRoom

@@Timberbeartrail There are no side zippers on these packs, top access only, clean and easy.

We want to give you extra bonus points for attaching the sleeping pad vertically on the front of the pack with the elastic cord, this is a great way to carry it. Sleeping pads are so light that they don't mess with the balance of the pack, and vertically carried the pack stays narrow and the underside free for stuff like hip packs or belt worn pouches. We highly endorse this method, 5/5.

Thank you! I saw photos of you guys using this method and tried it out. Moving through the trees confirmed it. I can’t think of any other packs I have used that facilitate this style. Really excellent.

With external frame packs back in the day, we got used to strapping those huge old timey tents to the top portion of the frame, and the foam mat underneath the pack. I remember in the 80s trying to figure out a way to strap those bulky items vertically, but the hardware just wasn't there. And I carried the Savotta flagship 906... Thank God for modern packs that have options!

Thanks for the review on the 2 Kahakka packs. I was enthusiastic after watching Tim Keys's initial video on the 25-liter Kahakka pack several days ago. This video confirms that the Askare 7-liter hip pack and the 25-liter Kahakka pack are now at the top of my *"Next Outdoors Thing To Purchase List."* Also, thanks for responding to several of the questions that I posed to Tim Keys. For an extended trip I can see piggybacking my 12-liter Hatka day pack onto the back of the 25-liter Kahakka pack. If one chose to wear the 7-liter Askare hip pack, then a lot of the weight from the Kahakka/Hatka combo would ride comfortably on ones hips.

HOLY POWERS of PISS! A pack with real pockets, I hate that mesh crap - catches on 'everything' and even a 1 litre bottle hardly hangs in on smaller ones, especially if you need to bolt or are in a reasonable water current... (actually Two packs! ) FILTHY AS MATE. ( The poms made a good burgen a little bigger than the 25 you have here but, it was heavy, no water resistance, no pockets and few anchor points which are now - 'antiquated'! ) SO, finally a no bullshit bombproof Bergen fit for modern times and modern equipment... NO - Two of em'. Shiiit! Has anyone noticed you can fit small shit in a big pocket, but you can't fit big shit in a small pocket. Jess... You LEGEND mate.💜👍 Universal Sovereign Citizen

Good Morning Jess .. 👍👍👍 .. another Great one. I think that Savotta has really hit the Sweet Spot with these two packs 😊. Not taking anything from the larger 25 litre, it is nice to see a Day Pack with a decently-sized pair of Side Pockets that can do an honest day's work and more and not get in the away when not needed. Not those gossamer 'mesh' 'unmentionables' (substitute with your own adjective 😁) which are the mode at the moment. Even better, a very 'clean' base that can be accessorised to suit every which way but loose. I would love to .. but the pockets are not deep enough 😟. A positive though, my Savotta Jääkäri S Jäger can continue getting my undivided attention 😊. Thanks for the Share, my Friend and until the next, take care .. Tommy

Hey Tommy, Thank you! Oh man, they definitely cracked into something good with these. The pleated pocket is brilliant. Indeed our "special sauce" is the sense of seriousness when it comes to military gear, we aren't making the most fancy, fast and special type of gear for that 0,01% of hyper speed door kickers. We make serious, sensible gear for the 99% of users, with an emphasis on ease of use and reliability in the sort of environments we've got over here. Thank you. I found them both to be quite comfortable, especially after adjusting shoulder straps to my frame. Sternum strap on both, waist strap on 25. The only thing I would say, is that the packs have a flat back, rather than any kind of ventilation like on the Jääkäri M. You can adjust the pack to loosen up and give your back some air, with the bottom of the pack resting on hips. It is currently in 90s here and this works for me. I really like them both.

Great run down. I've got a 25L one and an askare on the way. Pretty stoked. Have you got any advice on a good length of bungee cord to use in the webbing? Also, is it the same as paracord where you just cut and burn it to seal it?
@EnduranceRoom
@EnduranceRoom Ай бұрын
Thanks! That’s really cool. Bungee cord, I would run pretty long, it’s probably 6 or 7 feet, or 2 meters. I keep it long enough I can use it for my sleeping pad. Anything smaller like a jacket or tarp will easily cinch down with that also. If you are ordering it, I would grab like 5-6 meters of Finnish shock cord and a handful of their cord locks (it’s the best). Yes, burn to seal after cutting to length. Just run it and figure out your length before you cut it. It’s easy to do, just take time and measure up with your gear before you cut.

@@EnduranceRoom De nada! ☺️ Glad I might be of help. There are - as with most everything - some downsides: - Larger Filesize (up to 4 Times as much) - Higher Load on the Workstation you use for Cutting (but most modern PC's handle it well.) - Some Cameras use more power when recording in 4k and might overheat easier As well as all the implications that come with the facts stated above, like i.e. shorter recording times or more money for larger SD cards, longer Copy / Transfer Times, taking up quite a lot more local Disk Space etc. etc. In case that's to annoying, 2K might be a good tradeoff (roughly 2x 1080p)

Sorry, I don’t see the point. You give up a lot of flexibility by not having multiple adjacent rows of webbing, which I noticed on the Hatka already. Savotta seems to be drifting towards weaker fabrics (500D on Hatka and Askare instead of 1000D) and less flexibility. Just my opinion. Glad the older, indestructible stuff (Jääkäri) is still available.
@EnduranceRoom
@EnduranceRoom Ай бұрын
No worries. These are extremely flexible. I tried to relay that as best as I could. The 500d is used for comfort (on back) and flexibility (sides of lid). All structural stuff is 1000D. On the HATKA and ASKARE, they are small volume packs and 500d is more than sufficient, adding comfort and reducing weight. I am glad the Jääkäri lineup is still available as well. These are different and they all have their strengths.
@Savotta
@Savotta Ай бұрын
@@EnduranceRoom Yep, the majority of the packs is 1000D Cordura to withstand the horrors of carrying stuff like MG ammo cans, e-tools etc. 500D is only used on the back pad compartments outer side (against your body) and the sides of the folding top/lid to make it bit less clunky to fold and roll. Flexibility is still going strong, but we really wanted to make packs which are "good to go" out of the box, unlike the Jääkäri S for example which requires you to go shopping for a bunch of extra pouches, padding, sternum straps etc. to get it up and running properly. You can still add two of our 4L side pouches to the front of the pack, and use the side compression straps to attach pouches/bags "beavertail style", so there's really a lot you can do with these to tweak them if needed.

@@Savotta They are very good to go. Thanks so much for jumping in on these and offering some insight. I think it may take a little time for some to see the potential here, but they will come around.

Hm.... the larger one (25L) seems very similar to the jaakari S, but 100€ more expensive. It does come with folding pockets and padding on the back/shoulder straps, but said pockets and padding can be added to the jaakari S. Other than that, very similar packs. Even the top loading opening is the same. I will skip this one

The 15L is similar in size to S, the 25L to M. All of them are different and each have their strengths. Nonetheless, use what works for you. 👍

When going by RRPs the Kahakka 25L is 70 euros more expensive than the Jääkäri S, but you get a LOT of added functionality for that money: proper padded and contoured shoulder straps, a sternum strap, a 50 mm waist belt, a proper three dimensional zippered lid pouch, sewn-on expandable side pouches, two compression straps per side, proper back support/padding etc. Tweaking a Jääkäri S to match the functionality and carry comfort of the Kahakka 25L would cost a lot more than the price difference here, and the end result would be quite a contraption as opposed to the sleek form of the Kahakka.
