This video covers the vehicle setup and steering wheel configuration as well as how to use the GV overdrive switch buttons in auto and manual mode. I also take a test drive to show the GV lights in action.

This is awesome, Scott! Im building up my 88 Silverado i had in high school 18 years ago, bring it back to its glory to be my custom weekend cruiser. It will have the ls3 engine swap with a 4l80e transmission. I too will have paddle shifters for manually shifting between 1 and 4 , forward gears. A B&M stealth ratchet shifter will take care of all other gears (P,R,N,D). I am looking into the gear vendors overdrive now and it's comparability with the components im planning to use. I like how you mounted the G.V. switches to your steering wheel. I recently bought an NRG steering wheel hub for the GM/ididit columns, and am machining a custom clockspring to fit inside the hub. This will allow for up to 12 wires to pass through without the use of coiled cables or wireless RF based solutions. Testing so far has been a success. Hopefully one day I can bring it to market. My only snag is having trouble finding a manufacturer in China to produce the clock spring's spiral cable in lengths of more than 1 meter. 1 meter is just barely enough for 3 turns lock to lock, but some vehicles may require more, some less. Anyways, great content here! Cheers,

That sounds like a great build. I toyed around with finding a clock spring and nothing seems to fit. I ended up moving my adapter plate position and now the adapter is about 1/4" larger than the NRG adapter. So this left room for me to push through some wires. It works great, but i still have to rely on the coil cables, which I do not mind and they do not bother me, but if you can develop a clock spring that fits the NRG adapter, I will be your first customer. That would be a game changer. Good Luck!

@@scottcerreta1724 hey there scott, well good luck with the clock spring idea! I found a manufacturer in china who can provide the spiral cables in any length up to 10 feet! I have a few samples now, one has 12 conductors in it, seems to be the most that can realistically fit within a approx 1/2" wide cable. I will be working with a cousin of mine to 3d print a clamshell type housing for the cable like oems have. One side fixates to the column, the other spins with the wheel. Then will need to print some grommets for the spiral cable to exit/ enter the housing, and transition to small gauge wires. Thankfully the steering adapters for our vehicles (most 60s to 90s gm, and aftermarket like ididit) have enough of a cavity inside of them. Makes me wonder why this hasent been attempted yet. Ive only played with 3 oem clocksprings to study, and 2 of them were so close to fitting inside the adapter that it makes me think there has to be an oem one out there slim enough. But i think the money spent in buying a bunch to test from a junkyard is better spent developing this custom version. Even if manufacturing it seems like too big a task, i can always share the 3d print files, a link to the aliexpress seller, and some easy to follow pictorial instructions . Would sure be nice to have a hidden solution for some steering wheel buttons. Ill keep plugging away at my.endeavor and be in touch again when i have something tangible yo show! Cheers bud

@@HAMMER_2.2 Thanks for the update. Project seems like it is moving along. i would love to buy one from you is you can build it. i also added a ididit steering column with one touch button ignition. i think this aids to the modernization of my project car. i asked ididit if they have a clock spotting that fits their column and they said no. i was bummed because they have a cruise control lever option but apparently the electronics are on the column side and not wheel side. bummer. i hope you can master this. it would truly be exciting and i think you could actually sell these! there has to be a market for them.

Next week I'm buying a '66 Skylark w/455, aluminum heads, roller rockers, etc with a 9" Ford rear w/4:11 gears. It has a Gear Vendors unit installed so I'm anxious to see how it performs. I like your paddle shifter set up...sounds like a worthy upgrade

I have 4.11s in my 69 488 stroker 442 with a th400 Trans and this is the option I need. At 60 mph I'm at 3k rpms. Dropping 4-500 rpms would be amazing to say the least lol.

Awesome. Totally agree. If you want to drive at freeway speeds you need a TH400 and GV or ditch the TH400 and get a more modern L60 or L80 4 speed tranny. I love my old school TH400 so went with the GV.

IKR? I've been looking for a solution since I had my rear axle replaced, and all they could find was a .355, instead of the original .307 gear ratio for my 1990 Dodge Cummins (Newer transmission, etc.). Want to keep the truck simple. Trying to get the .307 gear ratio back in my rear end.

That configuration was just temporary. Check out my other videos I just posted a couple days ago. The column shifter is now gone and the paddles are part of the PCS electronica shifter. This configuration is so much better and so fun to drive. No more column shifter woo hoo

Decades ago my 350 with a Crane hydraulic cam, Edelbrock performer, Holley 600 and 3.08 twisted by a bone stock TH-350. In a 64 Malibu with cast iron log exhaust into 2-1/4 turbos did 14.9 1/4 mile times. At the dragstrip. I made it to 3rd round and Lost to a 70 Mustang SCJ. He caught me in the last 200 feet. Oh, in 1993 we only had pump gas with anti-knock Mtbe. No ethanol. So 87 octane in my daily with factory 9:1c.r.

Which paddles work with gear vendors?
@eddieschwab864
@eddieschwab864 2 жыл бұрын
Looks hella cool. I guess to each their own on paddle shifters personally I would go with either a dual gate shifter or lightning rods like on the Hurst/Olds. When driving my daily for work, dual gate very handy for preserving my brakes when slowing down. A few thoughts... considering this as an option for a few of my vehicles myself, wasn't sure in the case of racing use if it's best to keep it out of overdrive until you're in high gear and then go over to Overdrive but certainly obviously makes a lot of sense for Road use to run through 1, 1o, 2, 2o, 3, 3o etc.... But what is the durability on that sort of thing for heavy-duty use like if a person is doing stuff like hauling logs but trying to retain some fuel economy at speed???

You can certainly use it to split gears all the time. You wont hurt it if you're under 1200 h.p.

I have a gear vendors overdrive installed in my '68 impala. I found out why the unit shifts early into overdrive in automode. Is your dakota digital mechanical or electrical to the speedometer?
@scottcerreta1724
@scottcerreta1724 3 жыл бұрын
i think it is electrical. i only have one speedo sensor and the GV wires are connected to the DD box to share the sensor reading since both sensors were identical and i verified this.

@@scottcerreta1724 I found out to get the gear vendors overdrive not to shift into overdrive early I had to disconnect my speedometer cable. At first it was shifting into overdrive at 25 mph now it's 45mph.

how many rpm are you doing at 100kmh in top gear overdriver
@Harleytalks
@Harleytalks 2 жыл бұрын
So you can turn it off and on anytime you like? So it can go from the normal 3 speed to a "6 speed" anytime you press the button?
@scottcerreta1724
@scottcerreta1724 2 жыл бұрын
yes with one exception. the GV computer is connected to a speed sensor. your speed needs to be above the threshold to activate ON. typically around 40mph. the computer will also deactivate the overdrive automatically if you dont. typically around 30mph. that is it.
@davelowets
@davelowets 2 жыл бұрын
If you want all 6 speeds available with the Gear Vendors, you will have to manually press the button to engage the overdrive at the end of each gear, then as you reach the max RPMs again, you'll have to manually disengage it at the exact same time that the transmission shift to the next gear, and then repeat for each gear.
