Thank you Danny and Michelle for your knowledge. Natalie, what do you think of making a video about rare varieties of Opal? Opal can have 71 different varieties and probably more from what I've researched on Mindat. Here are a few rare examples. Isopyre, an impure dark red variety of Opal. Isopyre can come from a few quarries in Cornwall, England. The Dickerson Mine in Morris County, New Jeresy is the only and I mean the only mine in America were Isopyre comes from. Forcherite, a variety of Opal with traces of Orpiment or Realgar. It was named after Mr. Forcher who first discovered the original specimens. It only comes from a couple of localities. One in Ingering Valley, Knittenfeld, Styria, Austria. The other in the Mineral Spring in Saint-Nectaire, France. Modaro Opal, a purple variety of Opal. Modaro Opal gets it's name from the Spanish word, "Modaro" meaning, "Purple" since it only comes from Mun, De Magdalene, Jalisco, Mexico. Modaro Opal gets it's purple color from traces of Purple Fluorite which is the reason why it can fluoresce Cyan under short wave UV light. Due to traces of Uranium, it can also fluoresce Green under long wave UV light. Modaro Opal is also called "Grape Opal" or "Mexican Purple Opal".

I would like to clarify that while Lightning Ridge is definitely Australia's prime source for black opal, in recent years commercial quantities of black opal have been found in a number of different sites around Australia including Mintabe which is no longer producing any, and, Coober Pedy where the black material is largely darkened by patches of black inclusions through volcanic opal material unlike the black potch of lightning ridge, the black opals from these locations are rarely quite as dark as the N1 black opals found in Lightning Ridge but nonetheless they are quite stunning. I myself have seen a sizeable black opal specimen obtained from drilling operations off the coast of Sydney's Bondi beach "mostly potch with only a small seam of precious opal running through" and, I was lucky enough to have witnessed a black opal being found in an alluvial deposit about an hour south of Sydney. Hopefully in the years to come more sources for commercial quantities of Australian black opal will be found, the Lightning Ridge supply is running out and quality black opal is becoming more expensive each year as a consequence🙂

Ugh, it's my DREAM to mine and work opal. I live in WA and really want to venture down to the Virgin Valley in NV to go digging for precious opal. I plan to stop through OR on the way because I know a woman who has a fire opal claim there and will let me mine for free. The pieces I've seen come out of it are incredible and I can't wait to get some money together so I can go explore for myself. The way that Danny described opal is how I feel about chalcedony, since that's what's most prevalent around me. Jasper, agate, even chert can be beautiful in its own ways and I'm always amazed to see the natural art that comes out of the earth.
