Welcome back for another Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire video. In this video, I talk about what George R.R. Martin said during his interview, when he was asked, "will he let anyone else write in his A Song of Ice and Fire universe?" This is an interesting subject because fans have always wondered what will happen if George R.R. Martin isn't able to finish writing his books himself. As you all know, George R.R. Martin has been writing the Winds of Winter for roughly 13-15 years. He still hasn't announced an official release date for the Winds of Winter. This makes many of us wonder if he'll ever finish the Winds of Winter, or A Dream of Spring... Will he allow anyone else to finish his story for him? Can he protect his writing forever? George R.R. Martin doesn't seem to think so. He believes someone will eventually start writing their own stories in his universe. What will this mean for A Song of Ice and Fire if he doesn't finish it on his own?
Images and video clips from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are property of their creators, used here under fair use.

I feel like his writing the two back to back because GRRM his like a gardener in his style of writing so I think his not just writing the WOW but his on the DOS too and maybe of they got to be published one day he'll publish them back to back a year between the two And since winds is so big he'll have to publish two parts of the same book so I think he'll release winds two parts separately

I wish he would just be honest about why it never came out back then. Like if he geniuses believed it would be out in 2015. And then later said it would for sure be done for that convention in 2020. That was 4 years ago now, clearly something is going on and I wish he was just honest about what the issue is instead of always just vaguely mentioning “I’m working on it”

I think a story left unfinished is a tragic thing. Were I in his sotuation, I'd not only feel as though I owe the audience, but my legacy and the characters themselves. i think he's writing winds of winter at the same time as dream of spring, or at least making sure that everything in winds will properly transition into dream. i know he's a "gardener" writer but he definitely knows how he wants it to end and is just trying to make sure all the plants and vines are all properly trellised and pruned in just the right way. i'im sure he's also come across some complexities he is working around which is slowing him down, like the "merenese knot" in essos

It deeply affected me as a fan, let alone the father of the story… It has taken me a few years since the show ended to even be able to reread the books. I am in the middle of A Clash of Kings now, and I’m incredibly proud to have been able to pick the books back up after the trauma I felt because of the show. I’ve been able to work on slowly forgetting it was a part of the story at all, because I only want to remember the books as canon. Anyway so, yes, if this was my life’s work and someone assaulted it like D&D, I’d need a lot more time to recover than I needed now (just as a fan).

At this point, I don't really think GRRM has written much more than a brief outline for Winds of Winter, much less Spring. He just gives off the vibe of being done with it all, and is just running on fumes. My favourites for finishing this series (and I do want it to be finished, eventually) are authors Dan Simmons (Hyperion Cantos, Illium, Olympos, etc.) and R. Scott Bakker (The Second Apocalypse series). Both are fantastic writers, with no lack in imagination, and who have put out work comparible to Martin's own works. I am 100% confident that with either one taking on the task of bringing ASOIAF to a conclusion, they will do so honouring this world, and we will see these books within about three years of their writing of it. As to whether either is altogether jazzed about doing it, who can say. But I'd rather Simmons or Bakker have a crack at it, than the default fall-to, Brandon Sanderson. Nothing against him, I just don't think he's the best choice for fitting himself tonally into the Song. Anyway, that's my two cents.

I have full confidence that when Winds of Winter releases a Dream of Spring won't be far away. What I understand about the delay is that he had a hard time structuring the 5 year time skip that he had in mind. He got stuck on making either flashbacks or dreams, so my guess is that once he figure that puzzle out, the puzzle for a Dream of Spring might fall in place just from solving of that 5 year timeskip.

The Winds of Winter could make writing the Dream of Spring easier. He can resolve many plot lines in the WoW. In the DoS, the ending would be relatively straight forward -- unless his gardening impulse gets in the way!

I’ve seen people say that his blog post from the 11th of march this year is a cryptic tease that he’s done with winds or is nearly done. It has the blue flower that connects to Jon, the title is Words Of Wisdom (WoW) and the quote talks of dreams. I don’t think I believe it but it’s interesting.

I can’t see him ever finishing it purely because the HBO series happened. I agree with the Brandon Sanderson idea because of the excellent job he did with WoT. It has to be remembered that Robert Jordan wrote copious amounts of notes. The same would have to be true for A Dream of Spring or it wouldn’t work. I believe the HBO series is King Kong on GGRM’s back. I really don’t think he knows how to end it and is scared of writing it because it will be micro analysed more than enjoyed. Another possibility is maybe it is written to be published posthumously sometime in the future…

I hope he does have a chance to finish: I always think about the death of Robert Jordan, and the fact that he did not finish the final book in the Wheel of Time series and, while there were notes and a skeleton draft that were used to finish the series, I’ve always wondered if Jordan would think the story ended as he wished. I hope GRRM can do it, but it doesn’t look good 😢

Brandon Sanderson most definitely should not be the one to finish the story. He's a great writer, but his style of writing is not complementary to GRRMs style at all. Robin Hobb would be a better choice in my opinion, she is friends with George and was involved in teasing out all of his earliest ideas for the series.

Kafka wrote many incomplete works, most notably, "The Castle", that literally ends mid-sentence. That said, comparing 19th century dystopian, surrealism that created it's own genre ("Kafka-esque") to a fantasy writer isn't really fair. I'm sure George has trials and tribulations like all of us, but Kafka was a broken, frail, mentally-ill victim of parental abuse, whom died in his 40's. Kafka's final instructions included having all his works, complete amd incomplete, burned. If not for his singular, loyal friend Max Brode, realizing the value of the insights in his work, that genre of surrealism/dystopia wouldn't exist. Let's hope George has such loyal friends, otherwise, I don't think he's going to release either book in his lifetime. Other than pleasing eager fans, it's kind of a lose-lose situation for him, and the show definitely played a part in fans clamoring for a different ending, when for all we know, those "broad strokes" would be the series ending, with Bran on the throne. There's no scenario where he makes the entire fanbase happy, and he probably feels it's best to just sit on what he has, and release it posthumously. Finished or not, I don't think he plans to "be around" to see whether fans accept his vision for ending ASOIAF.

IN MY OPINION, I believe that Brandon Sanderson would be one of the best people who can finish the series well. Brandon Sanderson is the one who finished off the wheel of time series, and although I haven't read that series (I plan to) I heard the ending that he wrote after the authors passing was very enjoyable. Brandon Sanderson also has his own books (haven't read them, but hear really good things about them) and from what I understand is doing very well.

Of course I want to see George finish it but if that became impossible I would still read it if someone else finish it because I’m confident George has taken this in to account and has at very least a rough outline of where the story’s supposed to go and how it’s supposed to end. I feel like his publishers would insist on that. I would if I were them.

Of course with many and myself we want George RR Martin to finish the series in his words and his gift, but if he did pass I would request that he hand picked his own successor to continue his works. Hopefully an apprentice of sorts that Mr. Martin takes under his wing. The "apprentice" could write a couple of side novels under martins' guidance (maybe a series on the white walkers, would be mind blowing) and continue with the apprentice in such a way. Ect. I wish beyond wish that Mr. Martin delves deeper into the children of the forest and the whitenwalkers in his writings before he passes. As much as I'm obsessed with game of thrones and house ofmthe dragon, I would love a glimpse further back into giants, children of the forest, even Valeria where the targaryians come. There is so much untouched material. I have to say that even the battle of a thousand ships would make me euphoric to even see it come to life. I pray and hope the gta series finishes so we can have more of Mr. Martin's magic. This is my hope above all else. More history and side stories, series even.

I think The Winds of Winter has been especially difficult for GRRM to finish because of the complicated nature of this novel. Pretty much all major characters have to come together. While as of the end of ADoD they are all spread out. And he still has to tie off many loose ends with major and minor characters. I imagine it’s quite complicated. But I truly think that once TWOW is done A Dream Of Spring is going to be much easier to finish, all the major characters will be much closer together and any single POV will start to include many other major characters instead of having so many single POVs. Making the chapters easier to write. Jon and Dany and all the minors around them can be in a single chapter. Bran, Theon, Sansa and minors around them in single chapters. Things like that. A Dream of Spring will hopefully only be a few years after TWOW comes out. I also have a sneaking suspicion that GRRM just to spite us will have a dream of spring release post mortem.

I do really think that the most likely situation is that he is very close to being done with The Winds Of Winter and it'll be out within the next couple of years. As for A Dream Of Spring, I can imagine only two possibilities: He will likely die before it's finished, or he is writing it simultaneously with Winds and it may release somewhat soon (2-3 years) after. Given that George spends a ridiculously long time finding out what he wants, I think he already has his ending pretty safely done for Dream, and most of the hard work on it's set up is going into Winds; he doesn't struggle as far as I know with thinking of words, but moreso deciding whether or not he likes his stories, and if all the hardest work is done by the time Winds is out maybe we'll get Dream. Who knows.
