There REALLY needs to be an extended cut for this one. I feel if they release an extended cut I think it would actually help the story a lot more

Something went seriously wrong here. I don’t know if you’ve seen, but the guy who plays the truck driver in the mid credits scene actually released a video recently explaining how he got the role and in it he said that this was part of weeks of reshoots happening in November! That’s very late given the film had wrapped and the trailers were out.

Ghost girl wasn't featured anywhere in the trailers. It wasn't a great storyline/secret. I still want the film they advertised. Because the final cut was not it.

the trailer gave a specific mood. The movie took it away with the cuts and edits.

Companies that put these trailers together for the movie studios are the ones that take the footage and cut a trailer together. This doesn't mean that the scenes in the trailer were cut out of the movie. It just means that some of the scenes that the trailer company used to put the trailer together, the studios didn't put in the movie. This is common and happens a lot.

I was watching the film waiting for Janine to answer the phone and knew it it had been been cut but I never realised how much more was missing from the trailers. That’s false advertising isn’t it??

It's crazy, these are just the scenes we know we're cut out. There had to be LOTS more cut for such an impact on the scenes we know about. I really hope there's a substantial director's edition release of this movie.

The trailers had me so excited for the movie for so many reasons. The theatrical release left me really disappointed - and I love the other 3 movies religiously! 😞

The ONLY way we will see an extended cut is for fans to contact SONY and ask for it. Gil Kenan has already said he isn't interested in doing one.

This is so annoying! It definitely felt like a lot was missing. I especially felt like the "Frozen Empire" part was way too short, but who knows if that would've been fixed with the extra scenes

what's even more surprising is how many scenes from the released promo material that wasn't actually in the movie.

Reitman made the same mistake he made in the last one. Not enough original cast in it. All the cast are old, but they're still very spry and capable of "busting ghost" scenes.

Man, imagine if those scenes were in the movie, I think the movie would have felt more complete. Even if there were an hour worth of scenes cut out, I would have still see the movie in theaters if it makes the movie better.

I definitely think this was more of a studio call than director call. No way they would go that much into detail and willingly cut it themselves. The movie is just under 2 hours and adding those scenes probably wouldve gone close to 2 hours 15 minutes maybe 30. Definitely hope to see an extended cut version. And dan Aykroyd himself even said in an interview that he has ideas for 2 other movies after this one

FYI it's a very common marketing tactic these days to film scenes that are only meant for trailers to sell the "tone" of the movie if the movie has a high enough marketing budget. Often these will be asides and quick cuts of already planned scenes that they film at the same time with no strong plan to actually include in the final cut, and are scripted with a trailer in mind, or are B-roll/second unit type footage filmed exclusively as a "mood setter" for the trailer. There are definitely scenes in the trailer that are from cut scenes, but there are also a LOT, and I do mean a LOT, that to the trained eye look like they were simply shot specifically for the trailer.

Jurassic world dominion had this problem. Then we got extended version when it came to Peacock. Hopefully the same happens here

I am sure it will be added to the DVD release. This is why I stopped going to theaters when you are just getting part of the movie..

Sometimes the studio wants a shorter movie so they can get more screenings per night at a theater. A film makes most of its money the first 2 weeks shown, so more viewings helps box office.

I heard it may have been closer to 30 minutes that was trimmed out. Which probably is why to me, it felt incomplete. As far as there being scenes in the trailers that weren’t in the movie, every movie does that.

I just saw the movie yesterday and yeah, there were plenty of things cut out that were in the trailer. Hopefully will get an extended Blu-ray cut.

I get what youre saying but I liked that there werent any real spoliers. It wasnt one of those movies where the trailer was the best bits of the film. It left a lot of surprise. Either way I loved Frozen Empire

They must be showing different versions in this digital era. The version I saw shows lucky's eyes freezing because I thought, "Well if there's a part 5 she's not returning" thinking she bought the farm. And the verrsion I watched had Murray in the containment room with Rudd.

Actually, the two you mention about Lucky ARE in the film. She does shout 'get away from her' just before firing her proton pack when Garaka is puppeting Phoebe's ghost. And you do see Lucky freezing in the same scene just after Garaka freezes the proton stream. What I found missing were a lot of the set-ups for what happened later in the film. There needed to be more build-up to Phoebe's almost suicidal talk with Ray about 'ever wondering what it would be like to be a ghost' and then later, when she suddenly decides to become one, it is like there was a scene cut from the earlier tour of the research facility where that should have been explained. (ie Chekov's Gun was missing).

Very glad to see em back, but, a missed chance! They should have spent the 2nd half of the flick showing the freezing of ny, and I envisioned the battle with Giarraki on the frozen ocean, with the demon the size of the enpire state, a grey sky on the backdrop, something spectacular, they did the opposite! Pity, it has been the last chance to seen the 3 in action and they wasted

I have a feeling when they release it on blu-ray 4K. There's gonna be a lot of more content that we did not see in the movie. Plus how did they come from Summerville to New York City. I feel like that should have been explained in the movie.

What’s going to happen is that if there is another movie, no one is going to have much faith in the trailers released beforehand. I certainly won’t. It’s basically a bait and switch operation.

This movie was all over the place, we had some things we didnt like but if they do make an extended cut we will definitely check it out.

okay, glad I wasn't the only one who felt something was off on this movie. It really felt like it should have been longer. That ending felt...rushed.

Don’t forget the slim from GB2. They have the slime pack on in one of the cut scenes and we can see that they made the slime in the Adam Savage behind the scenes videos.

Afterlife was special but this was good. I wanted to see one the O'G drive the etco 1. 😢

If the studio was concerned about run time, they should have done what the 80's movies did, have a montage that combines a lot of action scenes with some music over top, then they could have more scenes with dialogue... I really think that's what Afterlife and Frozen Empire were missing along with the opening jump scare followed by the theme and intro. They're really trying to reinvent the wheel with these films, and while they aren't bad by any means, they removing a lot of the stuff that made the franchise so beloved in the first place.

Up until the week before it came out all the commercials said film not yet rated. I think they were having issues getting a pg13 rating and that caused all the cuts.

The trailer “Melnitz in uniform, yeah” changed to “Melnitz in uniform, looking sporty” in the movie!

Theyve always done this type of thing. Most the time they put all the good parts in the trailers

We need a directors cut

It happens all the time. Why is anyone's guess. A lot of times though, it's for pacing reasons. I've read/heard many big directors says if you want to make movies, be prepared to be crushed when you find it necessary to cut your favorite scene. But if it is studio meddling, I hope it gets an extended release. If not, there was a creative reason and usually it was a disruption of flow when looking at the movie as a whole.

Apparently the run time changed by 20 mins just 2 weeks before release.

Studios have this weird idea that we can't sit for 2.25 hours - but can for 2 hours. It's just wild how lost studios are with this stuff.

So the editor for the trailer would get all footage that was shot and they would grab what’s good to show people before the movie is done with their editing. Final editing would always be a bit different than the trailer a lot of the time.

There was a scene between Phoebe and Melody where they chatting in the subway train that got cut out of the movie as well .

I hope we do get some kind of directors cut of this film. I was disappointed when I watched it and all these scenes had been cut.

the simple explaination for this is alternate takes, studio notes, and cutdowns to fit under the 2 hour run time. All of that is going to be on Sony and Columbia and are outside of the director's control even probably outside of Jason Reitman's control as well. I'm sure they will probably have them as extras on the digital release and physical Blu-ray release. Hopefully enough demand can get an extended cut because it does seem like a lot of extra footage is available. This does happen a lot if you go back and look at movie trailers it's common to have things in the trailers that aren't in the films or alternate angles/takes. I liked the movie but felt the movie had some editing problems for sure.

Man!!! It all makes sense now. After watching your video, THIS IS MY SPECULATION, I think the gay/lesbian ghost character was shoehorned into the movie due to DEI mandates, deleting pivotal movie scenes that helped shape the mood & story. Look back, EVERY SCENE with the gay/lesbian ghost can be taken out and the story of the film will still flow. That story of the ghost was absolutely unnecessary for the story they were aiming to tell. Yeah, she was at the end of the movie to help defeat Baracka, but then why did Phoebe make a special proton pack (for it only to fail)? It was probably not meant to combine with the fire masters powers in order to defeat Baracka. I don’t know man, but I would have rather had that movie.

Completely agree. Thought there were some really poor and very noticeble, continunity edits in there too. Personally, I wouldn't have an extended version, I'd just cut all the scenes out with Melody and put the trailer scenes back in. Length would probably be the same.

I watched the film last night, and i am completely agree with your opinion, it was a decent enough fun film overall, but the pacing got worse as the film progressed. The final act felt really choppy, the edit room floor must have looked a mess! I think turning the franchise into a mini series might be the way to go in the future???

Sounds like Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 had some of the same issues as the original GB2

Them chopping down the movie made a discredit to the people who made and worked on the film, their editing messed how better this could have actually had been if scenes were added with Janine and Peter Venkman, I think they will learn from their mistakes.

I actually love that little was used from the trailer because the trailer reveals too much or ruins punchlines. Should do that with all trailers. I want to just be entertained and surprised if possible. That said I do feel like something was missing or the pace was off. Still love the movie with the cameos and OG throwbacks. Fun movie

The problem is that they wanted to please everyone and the product showed. It was a good movie, I feel, but I think when the studio made the call to make cuts it watered the movie down a tad. Again I think the movie was good. I also think Ghostbusters II had the same problem where loads of scenes were deleted and the product showed. Even though I love GB2.

Every cinema release of Hollywood movies has this issue today. So it's not related to Ghostbusters it's a system wide issue.

It's clear that a hoard of ghosts were supposed to attack them at firehouse.

ok, maybe no extended cut, but as has happened before, many a time, there's always hope for a leak of the workprint(which usually are extended)

I loved the movie overall but I was upset that so many scenes were cut. They certainly diverted our expectations.

We got pretty robbed. There was no real character development, everything was too crammed and shoved to keep moving. Smaller cast and more depth to the dialogue and characters, like in the original, that’s what we needed.

Movie trailers commonly have snippets of cut scenes. Hope they get on the blu ray.

My guess is that there’s several versions because some of the scenes you mentioned were in the movie I watched. Also trailers are often made using scraps from the editing process.

There’s an alternative - that like Rogue One they changed the story in places which made scenes redundant.

*Spoilers follow* Overall I'm really disappointed. It felt so much was shoehorned in for the sake of having it in there for marketing or nostalgia. I completely hated the Phoebe and Mercy story thread. It felt disingenuous to her character. It made no sense that Winston would keep the GB engineers a secret but allow the Spenglers to carry on busting with old proton packs. And why have Lucky who isn't a Scientist rather than Phoebe as an intern??? There was no explanation of Janine's new equipment and it wasn't really used. It would have made more sense that Lucky & Podcast were coming to visit them for the Summer and got caught up in events. Rather than them being part of the OG's team. The Fire master guy although funny I hated the fact they made him a magical hero who helped save the day. It should be science and busters not some ancient bloodline prophecy. The sex dungeon jokes weren't needed and for younger audiences not appropriate. They could have easily alluded to that so the grown ups got the jokes but it would go over kids heads (Like Ray's zipper dream in GB1. As a kid I didn't understand but thought it was funny as grown up it is still funny but not in the same way) Ray should've been the go-to guy for ancient languages not have a side quest to Patton Oswalt at the library. And Phoebe asking him if he believes in ghosts when he is friends with an OG ghostbuster was just stupid and wasn't consistent with her character. The library ghost although great to see was just for nostalgia. Had it been AFTER the containment unit breach it would have made more sense. The film feels like it's been chopped up and changed and they lost the flow of the film. There were alot of great ideas but they just weren't executed well. Too many characters. Too many concepts. The whole less is more would have worked so much better. I wanted it to be as good as Afterlife but feel this has damaged the franchise. I can't help but feel that Ivan's advice and influence was lost for this film. I want it to do well so we have more Ghostbusters films but if it's going to be of this same quality then I'm happy to stop here and just be happy with GB, GB2 & Afterlife.

According to the director very little was actually cut. I do not know yet if I believe him.
