Another point for the first take is how much the rules have changed. Guards have much more offensive value with a 3pt line, with softer rules towards what constitutes a travel. Back in the day Elgin Baylor footage shows you how palming the ball slightly inclined could be considered illegal and a foul. So it's also a bit of "is Bill Russell with 60's rules? Or is Bill Russell in today's rules?"

Yeah, if I had had more room in the tweet I would have said "physical difference", like too many causal NBA fans don't realize how much it matters to start playing ball at like 9 and seriously training by your early teens vs what even some of the best players were doing pre 1980-1990ish. This applies to pretty much every sport though, especially ones that were late to adopt dedicated strength and conditioning regimes. As late as the early 1980s you had NFL players that never even lifted weights, for example.

I think he’s going to play as long as he’s still really good and winning, and enjoys playing. He clearly loves basketball. All he’s ever known as an adult is being an NBA player, and he got pretty famous pretty fast. It’s just a totally different life for him. He turned 28 a few days ago. He was the 15th pick. So while he wasn’t instantly elite or mega famous, he went from being poor to being a millionaire really fast. Averaged 17ppg his age 21 season, then age 22 season was MIP, All-Star, 23PPG. All Defense, All NBA, etc. This is his 10th season, age 28 season. He’s got a $51.9M PO in his 13th season which will be age 31. I can’t imagine him retiring that soon. Like maybe he doesn’t play until he’s 40 or something, probably not, but he’s going to be good enough in a couple years to get another max extension. So I’d say 16 seasons minimum. I do think if the team is really bad with no real way of improvement soon, and he’s not an All-NBA player anymore, he probably would be one to retire and not stick around for the extra couple years of money. He’s going to be filthy rich. I mean just the contract he’s on now with no more earnings, which like I said is only age 31 season, that’ll be like $337M or so. His PO is the year the TV deal money kicks in too…so the cap will be higher even if they smooth it which they will. But even if he only plays through his age 34 season he will be pushing $500M in on court earnings. Then off court he’s raking it in, and I’m sure his popularity in terms of off court $ is peaking about now. So ya it’s hard to say. I don’t see him playing until he’s 38 39, but at least 35 or so. Barring any major health catastrophe. Also how good Jrue and Middleton are in a few years will matter a ton, and BroLo will retire, etc. so it’ll be interesting to see how they re-tool around him. Definitely a ton of factors. All I know is that I’m going to enjoy watching him in the now bc you never know what can happen. He just turned 28yo. Basically his peak.

If there's a trade to give up both 1sts for the Lakers, SGA and Giddie would definitely be a worthy one, as you're getting a borderline all-star and another high level draft pick I see fitting well long term as a small forward and secondary playmaker/primarily facilitator around AD, Reives, and SGA in a post LBJ Lakers roster should that be the trade made. I am not saying that's a realistic trade per say, but one as a Lakers fan I'd deem worthy

Just saying Cousy played from 1950-63. The first African American NBA player, Harold Hunter, was signed around Late April of 1950. And the first African American to play, Earl Lloyd, played on Halloween of 1950, Cousy’s first career game was on the same day or after that. I’m not saying there weren’t still issues of racial bias. If you just time machined and now Kyrie was playing in 60s, he wouldn’t even make a starting spot. Not bc he’s not a good enough athlete, but bc every time he’d try to dribble he’d get whistled for palming. He’d have to completely re learn dribbling technique to fit with the way way stricter rules. Once he did, his large advantage of being able to get by any defender would be largely nullified. He’d still be a great shooter, but also still a sub par defender.

@@ACLA23 you clearly just showed you don’t like Giannis with that statement lol and also Bron only had 1 and had just won his first ring at 27 and Jordan didn’t win a ring until 28 years old… you realize Giannis at 27 is literally entering his prime right now. In the last 6 years Giannis has back to back MVPs , 1 ring and FMVP , DPOY , MIP , 6x all star , 4 all nba 1st and two 2nd , 5x all defense , nba top 75 player ever , Like it’s staring you right in the face. He’s not the most “d ride” player ever …. He has clearly proven he’s gonna go down as one of the GOATS. He’s already top 20 time.

@@TheHoopaholics I like Gianni’s but people are acting like he’s the second coming of Christ compared to top 5 he hasn’t done much for his age. And people only bring up accolades as if longevity doesn’t matter. MFS are saying he has the chance at the the goat MJ was averaging 28 in his rookie year or something crazy and lebron was making the finals at 22 with Larry Hughes and big z

The argument for players should always be as is. This idea that we go “what would he be with modern medicine and training?” Is just stupid. We don’t know if he would be better, we don’t even know if they become good enough to become an nba prospect. It is a what if to the highest what if, and what ifs are pointless.

Your first take is exactly why I don't compare eras and why I believe in GOATs of eras instead of a definitive GOAT. The game has evolved so much over the NBA's history, with rule changes and better training, as well as better competition. I believe in GOATs of eras. I don't have a definitive GOAT. Jordan is the GOAT of the 90s, Kobe/Duncan, whoever you want, is the GOAT of the 00s, Lebron is the GOAT of the 10s.

On the first take, I'm convinced Jerry west would be an MVP today. We're talking about a guy who was a 6'3 guard but averaged 30 ppg at his peak with no 3 point line and rules that made it tougher for ball handlers. He shot it from far out too, just didn't get the extra points for it

Bobby "FIREMAN" O'TOOLE WAS DA GOAT Will never forget his matches against Timmy "The Streak" Houlihan Both were a threat to drop a STRONG 7- 11 points on you if you stepped outta line They had the best handoffs and under handed set shots you've ever seen

No hall of famer ever played their entire career under segregation basketball because the league was integrated in 1950 and the NBA was created in 1949. Which means segregation NBA basketball never existed.

Giannis won in a season where all big stars were hurt, heck if KD’s shoe wasn’t too big he wouldn’t have gotten past the nets, case in point he didn’t make it to the finals this year even when Lakers and Nets were busy self destructing themselves
@tmalecki1521

God, this take is so old and worn out, not to mention it’s completely stupid. Giannis literally got his knee bent backwards in those playoffs and came back to tear up the Suns in the Finals. Not only did you discredit Giannis for winning a ring because apparently “all the big stars got hurt” that year, you then go on to say “case in point he didn’t make it to the Finals this year?” You excuse Giannis winning bc injuries, and then don’t excuse his team losing even tho Middleton had to miss the Boston series and still took Boston to 7 games. Giannis literally had one of the best finals performances ever. Winning a championship is hard. Giannis and the Bucks got one. There’s no hating or discrediting that.

Not really a hot take he is 27 and he has 2x MVPs DPOY, FMVP that is an insane resume to have at such a young age in the NBA, So Giannis defintly has the potential to end up as a GOAT candidate he is already a top 15 player of all time, a couple more MVPs and championships and he is in that GOAT debate(Which i is a debate i hate btw)

7:05 Magic as the 3rd best ever?! I used to have that take as well. But after reevaluating on his career, being a bit lower on peak Magic and overall leaning more towards great longevity guys recently i do not think of him as highly anymore.
