I bought an Indian T140 export tank. Fitted it looks like a US spec 60's 650 tank, ie wider. It fits. It does'nt leak. But... The tank badge threaded holes left and right dont line up. One side is straight, one side droops down, so much so, that i had to make a threaded adaptor bracket to level it up. Then my go-to paint man has painted it twice. Bubbles keep appearing, he's at his wits end, insisted the 2nd paint job was free, but i knew it was not his fault. Just some imperfection in the reproduced steel. Never seen nought like it. Now on the 3rd paint job, just putting up with new bubbles... we'll call it character....

This is how my mind works - if you're doing two bikes with new front ends two things occur to me about the ones you take off; You could potter at preening them up on the side for future builds but it could be fun to build a complete frame. Either way they're handy.
@GuitarDan73
@GuitarDan73 4 жыл бұрын
Typically unused parts of the donor bullets are re sold to help fund the build... I cant vouch for Craigs bike but my front end and possibly my tank (I have a repro early tank to try out) will be sold to help pay back for the girders ive bought here.

Wow, that's quite a difference! Those other ones you could hear the threads clicking when you were turning the nuts. These "new" very old ones you can see there's a slight resistance, and hear a faint grinding in the threads, which in my experience is exactly what you want. Perfect fit. I must say, whoever made those old ones did a damn good job of it. Sadly, building and designing things to last is a thing of the past. 😢

can't wait to see those old forks when you've done your magic on them! I think one of the problems with a lot of stuff from the Far East is that although there may be just one company supplying those forks to your UK supplier and has been doing so for years, that manufacturer/supplier typically sub-contracts out a lot, maybe even all, the actual production work and so quality control is going to be very difficult to enforce ... good luck on getting your refund

Hi mate, love the videos, hope you get a full refund on the forks, and the old girders could be BSA M20?,but don't quote me,lol. I had the same kind of friction material on my 1950s Bsa steering damper, and I seem to think they had asbestos and woven brass/ bronze wire ,if you clean them be careful of the dust mate, I've watched a few of your video's, and I like what I see, I was in the motorcycle trade as aprentice in 1964, and witnessed the demise of our bike industry, it was sad but we could see it coming as the imports of Japanese bikes took over, but enough of me, I hope your keeping well, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.

You can find out from Ebay if there has been returns for the seller. If he gives you problems, contact Ebay directly. You should be covered by their returns policy, as the item is shoddy. Take lots of photos. Why not treat the forks with epoxy filler or cat's hair fire, which has small strands of glass in. Very strong unlike just powder coat

@black8art
@black8art 4 жыл бұрын
Fork geometry is a complicated thing! ..lol When you get into fork design, there are many variables that the builder is not in control of, such as headstock angle, wheel size, brake types and mounting points, which affect how the forks are loaded, and the all important weight of the finished machine. Most custom builders will build the forks to suit their machine. ....and ONLY their machine! I have always liked the look of "springers" but they are not best suited to front wheels with powerful disk brakes, ....well, at least I haven't seen any that were?
@paweb3530

@@black8art Thanks for telling me things that I already know. - "I have always liked the look of "springers" but they are not best suited to front wheels with powerful disk brakes, ....well, at least I haven't seen any that were?" And you completely miss the point of my question: I was talking about copying forks that Craig was showing in this video, as he wants to put the same one on the project he's doing for himself. He's planing to put this kind of forks on the very old, not so powerfull and slow bike - not on his modern honda with powerfull disc brakes. Also most custom builders don't build their forks - they use already existing ones from other bikes that suit and and have desired functionality and/or look. So what can I say... LOL...
@harrybrown4815

with modern materials and shock units its possible that this style of fork makes a return, as they would be lighter and stronger than what is available at the moment. This would also mean stiffer chassis construction.

Craig; if those forks are BSA, they are at least 75 years old. With that in mind, the copper sintered dampener pads are probably made with asbestos. That was a very common material for brake linings, clutches and the like. Be very careful with them. As long as they are not damaged, there is no danger but if broke ore even worn down, there could be. If it were I, I think I would find a way to get new ones made. At the least, make sure the owner knows. That stuff is deadly.
