What is glycogen metabolism? Glycogen is basically an enormous molecule or polymer, that’s made up of glucose molecules linked together by glycosidic bonds. After a meal, high insulin levels promote glycogen synthesis, whereas during fasting, high glucagon and epinephrine levels promote glycogen break down. Glycogen is considered the major form of glucose storage in the body.

Glucose and Glycogen Glucose is a 6-carbon molecule used to make energy in the form of ATP Excess glucose is stored in skeletal muscle cells and liver cells as glycogen Glycogen is a large, branched molecule made up of glucose molecules linked by glycosidic bonds Glycogen Synthesis Four main steps in glycogen synthesis: Attaching UDP molecule to glucose Attaching glucose part of UDP-glucose to glycogen primer Adding more glucose molecules to the primer Adding branches to the glycogen molecule Enzymes involved: phosphoglucomutase, UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase, glycogen synthase, and glycogenin Glycogen Breakdown Glycogen breakdown occurs in response to low blood glucose levels Enzymes involved: glycogen phosphorylase, debranching enzyme, and phosphoglucomutase Breakdown occurs in liver and skeletal muscle cells, with different enzymes used in each tissue Regulation of Glycogen Metabolism Two pancreatic hormones regulate glycogen metabolism: insulin and glucagon Insulin promotes glycogen synthesis and inhibits glycogen breakdown Glucagon promotes glycogen breakdown and inhibits glycogen synthesis Regulation occurs through phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of enzymes involved in glycogen synthesis and breakdown

@BeulahKuku

Guessing not because insulin also activates enzymes to do glycogenesis, (creation of glycogen, as this video shows) which causes the conc. Of glucose in the blood to decrease, serving it's purpose.
