Happy birthday 🎉! Just picked up a rust free vehicle from Vegas. Will be driving it back to MN to start it's salt torcher! I'm going to follow a huge KZfaqr, Musti1, and coat the underside and pockets with chainsaw bar-n-chain oil. It'll be thinned with a highly evaporative solvent. Then, I'll take advantage of the unpaved roads around me and coat the oil in dust/dirt. Do that once a year to touch up the thing spots.

Seriously! Mr O makes those bearing replacement look so easy. The previous guy used brake clean on the splines without re-lubricating. That was a pain to get the hub off with a puller. Then I didn't knew yet you could take the inner bearing ring off the hub using a cutting disc hamer and chizel. So I pried it off real professionally mm by mm with an old bread knife, a chizel and a hammer. One side took a hole day.

At 38:10 Eric starts talking about DIYers. That's me. My house is 70 years old this year. My basement sink was dripping, so I empty the cabinet under it. I close the valves under the sink which are inside the cabinet. I remove the sink taps. Corrosion galore. I need a new faucet set. The cutoff valve in the cabinet under the sink is dripping now. I shut off the water main, and try to remove the tap from the valve. The "feeder pipe" coming out of the wall pops loose, breaking at the joint inside the wall. I get out my plaster cutting hand saw, and cut a 12" by 16" hole. I use a copper pipe cutter to remove the corroded connector at the end of the pipe. I put on a new one. I install a new feeder pipe. I put in two new cutoff valves under the sink. I install the new sink faucet set. I connect the riser lines. Ta da. A simple 15 minute washer replacement has turned into a four hour major plumbing repair. No way am I calling a plumber when this is so easy to do.

You have my total sympathy Eric. I wrenched for 10 years a dealer tech doing heavy repair. We get sick days just like everyone else- but we have to work through ours. Fluids running through your hair, into shorts while your numb fingers can't tell if if they are hot or cold as you yank off a part above the exhaust. 10 minutes later the blisters form- it was hot. Baby needs new shoes, so you push through the day doing one crap job after another. Then you get home and hopefully nothing broke that needs attention that night. I thought it would never end. I finally went out and finished my degree and started working as an engineer. It saved my body. I still work on play toys and maintenance on my stuff- but I pay people to do the rest. God bless you and your family- you are a saint.

Well here in Rust Belt Chicagoland! We just had a few nice 70 degree days where I worked on several GM products that crumbled in my hands! Last night we had Tornados and rain, then came outside this morning to find one of the GM products I worked on had been put out of its misery! Yes Mother Nature broke a tree branch off and crushed a 2004 SUV like a stamp! I only ask, why did I spend the two hours yesterday to help my neighbor get rid of his money light caused by critters chewing on wires? Keep up the content! I have learned so much from Eric O. @@djsi38t The 2004 GM SUV in question had only 42,000 miles with original owner! There was a rusty frame crack on passenger side but with my TLC and a little luck the owners was happy with her. But we watched it being flatbed out of driveway! So it’s off to the World Wide Web to search for a replacement! Neighbors Insurance is guessing totaled price of $3500.00? Sad it had new brakes last October and 4 new tires in November! Then fix the rodent chewing on wires, and Oil change on Monday!

Another great video. I am sure there are GM designers and engineers out there drinking a beer and reminiscing about the time they decided to put the ABS pump on the frame under the truck. I am sure there was one engineer who suggested to put it in a dry, safe place in the engine compartment and was told that it would be cheaper and easier to mount it to the frame. It would also make it faster to build in the factory. The hell with replacing it down the line 10 years from now. The frame will rot out by then. It’s part of the planned obsolescence feature of these new trucks. A perfect GM Business plan!!

DiYer here. Recently did a brake job and like with this here the lines were seized to the nut. I asked myself WWEOD and promptly pulled out my torch. Unstuck a treat and relieved to get confirmation I did the right thing! Had a weird problem though where once fully undone the nut would not separate from the brake hose on one side only. Was nice and loose, could wiggle it about, but it just would not separate. Ended up taking an angle grinder to the hose nut. Tried my darnedest not to nick the threads on the brake line nut but of course I went a little to far and put a gouge in it. Fortunately it screwed back into the new hoses without much fuss and no leaks! You're an absolute legend for these videos, and a trooper for continuing even when your sick. When I have really crusty bolts, brake cleaner helps me more than penetrating oil. It's not because the brake clean penetrates and looses things inside the fastener, but because it cleans some of the crusties off so the socket fits better. Plus, I get to hear the patented SMC brake cleaner sound in my head when I do it, and that's what give me courage to pull the wrench harder.

Eric, there are some people like me. That's in the same position you're in when you're running. Anything else vehicles? I understand when you just want to start screaming. And Cussing like a marine I understand. But you're a good tech and I appreciate watching you, I will look for the second, part thank you again

Honestly wish I could afford a tool like your scanner. It has what I wish I had when working on ice machines. Not only do you get initial data on what an electronic part is doing, but you can if enabled, actuate the component and observe the data change to see exactly what it’s doing. With my car and ice machines, I’m doing it the old fashioned way, watch it and see what it’s doing out of the ordinary so long as I have a starting point of what I know it should do lol.

Entertaining and informative as usual. I don't think there has been an SMA video that hasn't brought a smile to my face. Keep up the good work Mr. O and thanks for what you do.

Thanks for sharing this video - it shows the "fun" that is involved in trying to save six brake lines from damage when the nuts are seized onto the lines due to corrosion. Reminds me of replacing all the brake lines with new ones on 80's full size GM RWD cars and not damaging the threads in the proportioning valve which was usually made of brass. Back then the proportioning valves usually survived and the lines disintegrated due to road salt - now the lines are better protected but the ABS module fails by the looks of it - got to love progress.

I'm retired now, but I'm just glad that, here in the south of England, I never had to deal with the kind of corrosion you see every day, where you have to have a whole different set of strategies to do even simple jobs, just because everything is rotted out.

Eric... you are correct about the 'walking away' advice. I've found myself getting frustrated while attempting to get something to 'play nice' or cooperate..only to become MORE frustrated if i continue. Taking a break and coming back, things tend to go a lot more smoothly. ...and yes, we have the corrosion and rust here in Meat-Chicken also.
