Clare Maxwell guides an exploration of sensing, feeling, and moving your tongue that improves your whole body coordination and posture. The only wrong posture for your tongue is to hold it rigid, in one place. Please don't do that! Follow the explorations to free your tongue, throat, shoulders, and balance. The tongue is a muscle-sense-organ that is supplied by 5 cranial nerves and you don't want to block all the sensory information they provide with tension.

If your tongue is resting in your palate, it is able to disassociate from moving with your jaw, head , etc. this alone helps amplify the effort from said CN. I see when you are moving your tongue your jaw moved along. Low, forward tongue placement can shift the teeth and occlusion into a suboptimal position - once again this may occlude cranial nerve effort. We see a strong correlation with jaw pain, sleep disturbances, dental issues when the tongue doesn’t rest in the roof of the mouth. This impacts the vagus nerve. I work directly with this population and see how low, forward tongue posture can negatively impact one’s health 😢

No position of your tongue will be a problem if you don't hold it all the time. I am not recommending any one position or "placement", that's the whole message I'm putting forward. It's not natural to try and hold your tongue in one place all the time. Also, Your language is very unclear - how can cranial nerve effort be "occluded?"how does a mobile tongue negatively impact your vagus nerve? I'm not even a medical person and this language is exceedingly vague.

Thank you, this was really helpful. Have been quite confused and frustrated to try to keep my tongue on the roof of my mouth. It most of the time want to be more in the front. I wonder if the tongue position has something to do with forward head position? Do you have something to say about that? 💖

Well, that depends on what you mean by "head forward position." For sure, since your tongue and jaw are also part of your postural system, if you arent trying to hold them in any particular position, they will shift in relationship to your head and body. Often, however, when people say "head forward position" they are really thrusting their neck forward and tension the back of their neck to pull their head backwards into their spine. Language around these things can be tricky.
