It's interesting how some fans hate "restored" comics. Yet, when they send in their comic collection to CGC and get them "cleaned and pressed", that's okay, despite the facts that cleaning and pressing is the definition of restoring your book.

I think it's because cleaning and pressing still get blue labels

It depends on the technique used. If someone does additive restoration or uses certain chemicals, it will destroy your book. If you are only doing subtractive restoration like cleaning and pressing it would NOT be considered restoration.

My thought is .5s & 1.0s are fair game for resto. Those grades look SO bad that resto is a good idea. Once you get to 1.5... even though that's a very low grade.... leave it alone. I like to look for PLODs that have a very small amount of resto, buy them at a seriously reduced price, and remove the resto. I've had some great success doing this. My greatest victory was taking a 7.0 AF15 PLOD (small amount of color touch), cracking it out of the slab to discover it only had 1 dot of color touch on the spine. I carefully scraped it off, resubmitted it to CGC and got a 7.0 Blue label. If you know AF15 prices then you know the value of the comic jumped an amazing amount.

I'm with you here. I want to buy an old comic, and I want to see the history. But there's also something to be said about a really bad .5 where 1/2 the cover is missing and I'd rather have a qualified 3.0 missing a stupid ad page, or a light resto 3.0 etc.

I would rather have a lower grade unrestored blue label key than a higher grade purple label restored key. I was quite surprised to see Todd McFarlane owned restored keys considering he has the money to buy the highest grade blue label available. Still just to own those grails is huge especially action comics #1.

Nothing wrong with restored comics, and they are seriously undervalued. Without restoration many comics would get further destroyed with time (e.g. trimming chipping/jagged edges). I'm pretty annoyed by collectors who won't touch / trash talk restored comics.

@@DDumbrille you are preserving a part of history, however quaint, insignificant or childish you may consider it to be. It is also valid to consider it art and culture, and comics hold a lot of social signficance, considering their presence as an entertainment medium, their influence in their consumers and how they were produced by different people throughout the years. It also goes beyond the story and art that is being printed, as its advertisements, price and other addendums can give you a big insight into the time in which they were produced, and the comic book issue in and of itself also bears history as a physical item, each issue will have its own personal history. While many don't have it evident, and collectors usually seek the more untouched specimens, there are loads of comics out there who can tell personal stories, or at least give you a clue about their previous owners.

higher grade older comics are rare. all comics are on a countdown to destruction , that's why they are valuable. go watch that raggedy ann and andy Christmas special where the wolf wants to put all the toys in glop, or gloop so that they can last forever and always be beautiful. . my first cgc was a weird war tales #1 and I cut it open . I bought the book to read it and was pissed I couldn't get at it. comic books are books. if you are going to just slab it , save some money and buy a poster. ( I have a werewolf by night #32 cgc 6 for sale on ebay as we speak , it was part of a larger group) lol.

I just bought a Flash #105 that is in horrible condition, cover is detached and a couple pages replaced. It's a 'raw' comic that the seller graded of 0.5. I eventually want to buy a 6.0 - 7.0 slab of it, but for now I can't decide if it's worth restoring to a 'respectable' condition for a showpiece of a 20+ issue run of the collection or if I should just try to pawn it off and use the proceeds towards the slab. Thoughts from the pro's here is greatly appreciated.

Why is pressing not considered restoration but removing staple rust is? I think restoration should be saved for "adding stuff" to the book. I feel like if I follow the dollar I'm sure pressing isnt considered restoration because CGC offers pressing services? Or is my comic conspiracy hat on too tight?

Personally, I would never buy a restored comic, just not for me. But, I had a JLofA #1 come back from CGC as "Conserved" (This was a blue label PGX before sending to CGC!) I read about conserved, but still don't fully understand. To me it's either restored or not. If you do another video on restoration, please discuss conserved comics. Thanks!

SuperJoe. Conservation includes solvent cleaning tear seals staple cleaning no color touch or pieces added. It’s basically something CGC invented a few years ago before they came up with the gray label all of those books would have been considered restored purple label books by CGC. Gray beats purple all other things held equal.

This is an extremely refreshing video, compared to a lot of your recent stuff! Your vocal tone is organic, with natural inflections and genuine timbre, as opposed to the shrill over-punctuation and "morning zoo" antics... Please maintain this orientation from here on out... it suits the subject and is far less clown shoes than a ton of the recent gimmicky shit. Your content is phenomenal, regardless, but yeah, the chillness of this is like an oasis of knowledge, unfolding without pretense or conceit. Oh shit... this is from 2.5 years ago... fuuu

The culture of collecting comics in the 80's and 90's drove an abundance of amateur restoration (terrible magic marker color touch, trimming edges, pressing comics with a clothing iron, etc...) in hopes of the seller getting more money for higher grades. Now that CGC grading drives the current market, restored books (amateur or professional) get a deadly and undesirable purple mark. This current thinking is driving amateurs to dry clean and press books (without any professional direction) because it isn't considered "restoration". Is it not possible that heating comics in a press could potentially cause books to prematurely become brown and brittle in the future?? Only time will tell. I believe there is great value in quality, conservative, and professional restoration (especially in rare, expensive books in the fair to good range). Antique automobiles are perfectly acceptable when restored professionally. I think that the comic collecting culture should be more accepting and appreciative of professional restoration and should treat amateur restoration differently and value it a lot less. Also, we may need to be a lot more leery of current, non-professional cleaning and pressing methods, because we don't know if the future collecting culture will be accepting of them.

Restoration in the collectible market is tricky. 100% dependent on each market. Classic cars is a brilliant example. Comics are the opposite. Its interesting in some markets having a "pure / as is" version of the collectible is better than a professionally restored collectible.

Still watching, but I don't think restorations are as awful as people make it out to be. Half of the paintings considered some of the most expensive art pieces of all time are restored. Heck, 70% of Da Vinci's Last Supper is a restoration. As long as the proper documentation exist to get the restoration 1:1 I don't see a problem. Some people may look to restoration if the amount of high grade issues in circulation are so low.

I'd rather a book be restored instead of it further wasting away. I have a bigger problem with people "destroying" books to remove restoration. Sure small defacement here and there, or removal of harmful additions I get, but there have been a few horror stories of books that have had their covers nearly shredded to make sure they got rid of all the color touch.

I hate restored books. I'll take a lower grade universal any day over a higher grade purple. The introduction of CGC to the hobby created more resistance to restored books. The wildly outdated Gerber photo journal mentioned in previous videos (1989) with the now debunked by the internet and CGC census scarcity ratings, actually recommended cleaning since it wasn't restoration (whoops!). Some people considered it resto while others like Ernie Gerber felt incorrectly it wasn't. There was more gray area on restoration back then. When CGC arrived they drew a hard line on resto with their dreaded purple labels. The old wet cleaning technique once used is now clearly restoration and that's generally accepted as such.

Restored comics in cased* in plastic will never last on account of what was done to them, During the heating season when the heat kicks in, those incased* comics will leach inside them slabs. Leach what? We won't know because there's no real records of processes used to restore them. Chemicals invite an all new problem now that humitity kicks in from your havoc / heating system. Chemicals on paper invite new bacterial mold growth when moisture levels inhouse rise.. etc.

I understand how the community feels towards comic restoration. Whenever you come across a comic book that has been restored, then it loses it's value and it is worth only half of what the comic is worth when it's un-restored. But when you think about a highly valuable comic book that's a complete mess, that's when Hero Restoration can come in and make magic. I've seen them take an unrestored messy comic book that you could barely handle without causing more damage, that was a 1.0 and bring it up to a 7.0. Purely art

Yep, all this restoration snobbery could only come from the comic book world. All this slabbing and grading the last 20 years was the start. CGCs in your face slab banner of purple for them. For a book people would probably what to display. Nope. Everyone wants a blue banner. No one just enjoys thier books anymore. How could you if you slab it? Especially orphans that don't get into reprint books. Have you eever seen a masterpiece in a museum saying..... restored. No you dont, but nearly everyone of them have at some stage in its life.

I think it’s totally dependent on the book for restoration, something like the Avengers you showed us definitely understandable, but say doing just color touch or staples replaced on a book like FF1 or Detective Comics 27 would be sacrilege to me..... I also imagine there are times where it’s worth restoring in order to best preserve a book. Definitely a case by case thing and no hard line for me on it.
