I've worked at a gas station for over seven years now and there are so many safety precautions in place to prevent gas spills that you have to go out of your way to make this happen. Breakaway cables, internal safety shut offs, manuel shut offs, the whole nine yards.. And the fire department has training and very specific procedures to handle this. They would not be lost as to what to do.

Unless that fuel truck explosion triggers a mantle plume, I doubt a fire that is gone in a flash can compare to nuclear fallout lasting centuries... @@SeedlingNL Around 90% of radiation is gone within 48 hours, which it constantly and consistently gets lower and lower as time goes on. So about a week, let alone decades of time would end up with practically nothing more radioactive than a banana. The only place that could still be radioactive is probably the area directly around Chernobyl, not mentioning the nuclear reactor itself where no one would have to worry cause they'd literally melt if they somehow got past the concrete coffin. The "fallout" they dug into would be barely radioactive nowadays assuming they weren't digging that trench near uranium or Chernobyl. (And only an idiot would do the latter)

I am a gas station clerk and this is driving Me nuts. First of all, there's button to turn ALL pumps off. Ours is inside on our register but we've all seen them outside too. Second of all, modern pumps don't break like that. People drive off with the pump still in their car (it's happened 5 times this year), there's a safety mechanism that breaks off the handle and keeps the rest intact. Lastly, the spot for new fuel is usually more out of the way and I've never had a fuel truck driver park whenever they felt like it. Granted I'm one person at one modern gas station so others might have different experiences but none of this would happen at the one I work at. (And probably almost no others either)

Last year, I had the 'fun' job of emptying fareboxes off city busses every night into vaults while workers were gassing the busses up and sweeping them out. On occasion, workers forget to detach the nozzles from the busses before moving the busses to the next stage of the nightly cleaning, and the way we didn't have fuel spewing forth in an alarming manner was the hoses at each of the four pumps had a point on them that could pull apart without a fuel leakage happening. Reattachment isn't difficult, which is a good thing, especially on weeknights when there are several hundred busses that need fueling and cleaning.

One of the rules that Bob Cinader, the Producer for Emergency! had for his writers is that every rescue had to come from the logs of some fire department somewhere. They could adapt it for the show but it had to be real. First the writers thought that would be boring, then they started to read the logs and could not believe the things fire departments had to respond to. The naked girl with her toe stuck in the faucet, that was a real rescue.

In 2005 he and I were on a vacation on San Pedro Island, Belize and Pop had to show the fireman how to use the pumper truck to draw water from the ocean to fight a fire. He stayed at the pumper to ensure safe operation. Me? Because the WOMAN in “charge” is not thinking clearly enough to remember that ! But actually it is just a show and it wasn’t written into the script. Honestly as a 24 year veteran firefighter I have come to the educated conclusion that women have absolutely no business whatsoever on the fire ground. They are a liability, and practically useless. No matter what any woman may say, they just don’t have the strength or stamina to do the job when it counts. Sorry liberals, truth hurts and the truth is not what you say it is, it is facts that dictate truth.

Our hoses are break-away hoses. In the coupling there's two conical ends that when pushed together let fuel flow freely, but if the hose breaks away a spring retracts and brings the cones to the ends stopping the fuel. Also absorbent, both in towel and "powder" form(it just looks like cat litter to me), a couple of snakes, and basic PPE. (Tyvek suits are in the kiosks, I work in NJ, a full-service state.)

I REALLY want to know how the fuel delivery fucked up enough to let out THAT much gas without once hitting the shutoff. Usually the only thing that will break or wear on there is the... nah better not to say more... basically nothing that would fuck with the refueling process.

However. They would need to have at least two gas station attendents in on it, and find a way so none of the delivery drivers said shit about how bad things were, AND have none of the delivery drivers DO anything about it.... just for nothing to go wrong on the ports end. The shows Jason parodies are so stupidly and poorly written and produced---by clearly inexperienced writers and directors---that nobody ever thinks about such common sense things as shutoff valves, or walking around behind the pumps, or using the aerial ladder to get across something like slippery foam (just using the various things Jason brought up). Why I won't watch television shows anymore---they're so incredibly stupid and ill-thought out, the so-called "entertainment value" is completely non-existent.

This is a f$&ked up job and you will see f$&ked up things. Heart attacks, cancer, and suicide are how most of us end up. All of us end up with shitty knees and a few burns. Not marrying the hot girl at the station you've waited 2 seasons to kiss. Scared? Good theres the door. Leave now, don't waste our time. No judgement."
