Looking at extending our little 10x10 deck another 8-ish ft. I’m a visual guy so this video helped a ton getting a general overview. Yours looks great, I loved watching the finishing stain to round it all off.

You have a luckiest wife dude. Well done. If you get sick of paint peeling, go with acrylic semi stain. 2 coats = solid finish, but no chipping/peeling 5 years down the line.

Thanks for posting this. I may be in a similar situation next year. I am about to have a deck built that will come out 7.5 feet from the house (and I wanted it to be 12 feet)...but the town won't allow it. So I may need to take on something like this to expand it on my own (after they inspect the original 😉). Why did you toggle the size/starting places of all the different boards you installed...was that just so people couldn't tell where the old section ended and the new section begins?

awesome work, i'm looking into extending my existing deck (14' by 12') to (12' by 20') but my question is are these bricks or cinder blocks under the joists enough to support the weight of the extension? will this sink in a bit into the soil, that is my only concern/question.
@jameshartley6669

Aha, I am glad you mentioned that! I wanted a patio, however, we have a HUGE maple tree not too far from the deck. There used to be a patio around that area and it got destroyed by the roots of the maple. If I did a patio it would look good for about a year and then I have a feeling the roots would start to ruin it. Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video!

Why do you stagger boards going into the existing (top boards)?
@garretttidwell864
@garretttidwell864 2 жыл бұрын
Preassure treated wood needs like a year before you paint it. They blast it with water and chemicals. If you don’t wait the proper amount of time, it’s more likely that your treated lumber will rot from the inside out.

NICE JOB! The only thing I would add to the video would be a little narration, especially for those of us beginners. I know, I know...you didn't want to make a 2 hr video, but adding a "here I'm cutting the previous boards because..." or "this is where I added the....." Yes, I know that's ALSO a lot of work, editing is not EVERYONE'S forte, but I'm a novice at extending decks and really like the work you did and was thinking-"Yeah, this is exactly how I want to do mine, but there's no 'how to'!!" Just a guy cutting and nailing boards! Bummer.....oh well..on to the next video....

You over spanned your deck joist. 2x6 should only span 8'8" per minimum code...I however will never span a 2x6 over 6'. You also used Rafter ties on your Ron joist instead a 90° joist hanger (one sided hanger. Why would you put post on the outside of deck. Why didn't you use coated screws for the entire build instead of nails. Ring shank nails will back after shrinkage. 2 weeks isn't long enough for PT to cure but I wouldn't wait at all to put at least Olympic water guard over it as soon as you were completed...UV rays will ruin the lumber if you wait until cured. To properly construct a deck with PT, you should stack lumber in a cool shaded area where air can flow thru for a minimum of 2 weeks in the summer time to allow for shrinkage and drying before installation
