I was absolutely committed to the morning workout for my first year or so as a very amateur triathlete, and I agree that it makes you feel good for the day. It also makes it much less likely that you miss a workout. But, as time has gone on, I've found that flexibility is the key. I go when I feel relaxed and able to take the time, when work and family commitments allow, when the conditions are best (e.g. weather and traffic are OK, or the pool is quiet). I can adjust my eating schedule to suit this (i.e. not having a massive lunch before a 15:00 run). I think this is the best way for me, but I notice that most other people are more absolutist.

Nailed it....and, some days / nights I work late to getting enough sleep the next morning vice waking at 0430 or 0500 and then going on 4 hours of sleep sets me back way more than just adjusting my workout window for that day.

I had always been an owl and then, last November, I started running. I was doing that at about 8 am, just before work. Then at the beginning of March I started switching to be an early bird and starting my day at 5 am and running just after I wake up. If you told me a few months that I would start running (which I always hated) and will become and early bird (which I hated even more) I would laugh at you and yet - it happened. Life is strange... :-)

Being a senior citizen now, I find the changes in my body clock fascinating. Some weeks I’m a morning person and then it switches for a few weeks and I’m suddenly a night owl. This also relates to how I’m recovering. Either way, I make it a point to listen to my body. I never try to force the issue anymore. There is no sense to try to train if I’m truly tired. Thanks Heather! Always a pleasure to see you doing your thing. Quite an exceptional young woman. ❤

I am one of those leap-out-of-bed people, but I only work out in the evening, because I don't want to be stressed when running. It relaxes me, decompresses me. When I am working afterwards, all I can think of is the meeting that is scheduled, or the time that I have to make up by working longer later. And in the summer, it is also much nicer to work out in the evening when it gets cooler.

My performance in the evening is noticeably better than in the mornings. That’s a fact. But it seems training in the morning gives more time for the body to calm down, resulting in better sleep and better recovery, at least for myself. It’s also so much easier to fit in my schedule.

Definitely morning works better for me because in South East Asia weather after 10am easily goes up to 34-36 celsius even if evening still stick around 27-29 celsius, unless you are willing to run during night time which can be inconvenience and mild safety concerns!

Personally I prefer late morning, lunch time, or mid-evening (preventing😂). I’ve almost been hit by vehicles a couple times, so I stay away from night runs. I need time to get my body ready, and have found I’m more successful when I train later than earlier.

Until recently I used to do my weekday workouts mostly in the evenings and on consecutive days (following Garmin training plan). However, evening training pushes my dinner deeper into the evening and my ability to fall asleep (2 h after dinner). This resulted in less sleep and poorer recovery (have to wake up early to prepare breakfast etc. for family). Now I changed my training plan and have 2 sessions in one day (easy one early morning, easy or tough early evening) followed by a day of rest. I also like the fact mentioned by Heather that most sport events start early so getting a training session in early helps to condition the body for race events). I also agree that I do feel good at work after early morning exercise (and shower).

I’m so glad you mentioned morning workouts as being anxiety-producing and diminishing sleep quality. I have been trying all year to make it to AM swim but I keep being so nervous I’ll miss my alarm, or flop during the workout, or the train won’t come, that I stay up nearly all night and of course sleep through my alarm. This is like my deepest secret of the year and thing I’m most ashamed of on some level! I reallyyyy want to make it to a proper morning swim session (not just 12:00 midday 😂), but maybe having this understanding about why it’s so difficult will help me get there!

I'm a morning person, although I do workout in the evenings sometimes too. Prefer the mornings as it sets you up for the day, I love a fasted workout starting the day in a calorie defecit makes me feel great then spending the day eating and recovering well makes me feel even better. I normally spend the mornings having an easy sometimes long run and speed work in the evenings when I've eaten great throughout the day and got loads more energy. Great video thank you

In Singapore, the morning is much better for me. It's several degrees cooler than it is after sundown (due to a lack of convection), and that makes the start of the run very comfortable. If I'm still out after 7:30, things heat up quickly, but I'm warmed up by then anyway. Many people swear by evening runs here, and I don't quite understand it. I'm certainly faster toward the end of the day than in the morning, but comfort wins out--and all that jazz about starting your day right.

There was a Dutch study under athletes on this subject and it concluded that it really depends on what type of person you are. They concluded that you there are people who pefrom better earlier in the day and those wo do better later in the day. Which is not so weird, because there are real morning people and, people who are not. So my advice, don't go against the flow. The early race thing is a good point though, if you are somebody who does not like early mornings, either train/simulate for it. Or just don't sign up for a race with a astart on a time that does not suit you :)

When I lived in San Diego I would do a morning and afternoon commute which doubled as workouts for me. I also got up early - 5am and got to work by 7 so I could leave at 3pm. Now that I live on the East coast it's more difficult for me because in winter here, it is so cold and dark and I work for a fin-tech with EST bank hours! Left to my own devices, my ideal time to workout would be 3pm but my employer probably wouldn't agree! Since I'm lucky enough to work remotely I do hope to move back to the West coast just so I can end my day at 3pm (or 2!) again.

Just quick observation from myself: when going early (after I get up), I ususally struggle to keep going smoothly and I have a feeling of a stiff legs, the body just does not want to move and this results in higher HR. Of course, the proper warm-up helps a lot, but it must be much longer compared to running in evening. However, the psychological benefits of morning runs are awesome. I'd like to change my habits to go for a early morning run at least 3-4 days a week, for a very very short 3-5k and do it in Zone 1-2 (and increase over the monts up to 10k). Make the entire run just a quick warmup before the day. Then, in the afternoon/evening usual workouts because I struggle a lot to keep myself in Z2 in these, so I'll do it in the morning when my body is lazy :)

I used to train in the evening after work, but now with a young kid and a longer commute, I prefer the morning: I can do my workout before everyone is awake, and I’m more rested compared to the evening, after a day of work and commute. It also means that I’d need to let my partner deal with the kid by herself in the evening. I tried doing workout after the kid is in bed, but it’s getting late and I’m one of those people that takes forever to wind down after a workout, so I only do yoga/stretching late after kid bedtime

As a preference I enjoy running in the afternoon or evening since i don't like to get up at the crack of dawn. However, there is no doubt in my mind that during morning sessions my body feels more comfortable, warmed-up, and I can handle longer distances better. I have a desk job as a software engineer, so I think that plays a big part in it. Usually on weekends I run in the morning (one long run on Saturday and a recovery on Sunday), and afternoon/evening (depending on the heat outside) on weekdays.

Early bird. Cuts down on grooming. Get up, work out, clean up and get on with the day! If it is a two session day, because I am a triathlete, I don't have to care that my hair is a mess after showering in the evening. I just get up the next morning, get on with another work out, then clean up.

I’m definitely a morning person. Love getting up early in the morning and enjoy dawn. On the contrary, when it comes to training, whether is it running or gym session, my performance is way better in the afternoon/evening at 5/6/7 pm. That’s why in the morning my bpm’s tend to be higher and that brings me to stop running in little time due to fatigue. After midday instead my bpm’s drop and that allows me to better deal with physical fatigue

Definitely morning - the earlier the better. The main reason is I’m just wired that way. I’ve been a morning person my whole life (I’m 66). Example: a typical double day for me is on the bike trainer at 0200 for three hours, then in the pool by 0530 for 1 1/2 hours. Then home for breakfast, some light chores, then a nap. If I don’t get it done first thing, it likely won’t get done.

Definetly a night owl, especially for harder sessions- training is way easier and more enjoyable for me in the evenings, and I'm not the greatest sleeper either way so sometimes having the extra hour or sleep in the morning can make all the difference. Mornings are typically easy/endurance stuff for me, though it can be nice to get the long ride/run out of the way early and have the rest of the day to refuel- if I do those late it's hard to eat enough after so I'll wake up feeling like crap the next day 😵‍💫

My body clock is pretty much set to wake early and go to bed early so that’s definitely a factor. That being said, just because I wake early I’m not necessarily ready put on my shoes and run that early. If work wasn’t a consideration then probably 2-3 hours after I woke up would be ideal for me. As it is I’m more likely to do it on my lunch break or IMMEDIATELY after work (any later and it starts to get too close to bedtime). The timing of this video being released is kind of funny because it opens talking about not needing to worry too much about the heat in the UK, right in the middle of heatwave! I’ve been kicking myself out of the door before 7am to stay cool this week 😂

I used to be a morning workout person, but due to time restraints stemming from work and family obligations I recently started including evening workouts as well (usually as part of a two-workout day). The jury is still out but I definitely adjusted much easier than I had anticipated. I wonder what GTN's thoughts were on doing two workouts in a day, especially since by the very nature of the sport a triathlete needs to be able to put out a decent performance in three different disciplines consecutively.

If I don't exercise in the morning it likely doesn't happen. At the end of a long day you're exhausted mentally and physically and then life's responsibilities being a parent kick in. Even though it might not be as fast in the morning, it actually gets done and it's at a time where no one else is awake so no one else is pulling for your time

Due to early morning office shift I have to workout in the evening but it has time limitations as you need to get ready for tomorrow's office..

K, I paused the video to predict what gtn is going to say. “Is it better to train in the morning or evening? Well, it depends…” Now let’s see how close I was!😂

#gtncoachescorner what is exactly the advantage of a better fat oxidation or the body being better able to use fat as fuel? Is there a difference when fueling appropriately with carbs? I do not quite understand where the perks are. I do all my training fasted (first thing in the morning is the only time of the day I have before the family and work wakes up)

My simple answer to the question... by the evening I am tired. No chance to do, for me, the same that I can do in the morning. I cannot imagine running a half marathon at 6 PM. Just me.

I just can't function in the morning ☕ Even if we leave this aside, how do you train without eating first?! And if you do eat, how long do you wait until training? (For me it's usually 1h 30 - 2h)

I train in the morning. I'm too tired to work hard but it's the only time I have daily. 5am. So very rarely.

I do the majority of my sessions at lunchtime, does that give me all the benefits or all the disadvantages? It doesn't really matter either way though as it is the only time i can fit in what i need to do.

Early bird: Get it done before the kiddies admin starts, and also less chance of something crashing your plans. Great to start the day with a sense of achievement. Also, most of the races I compete in, starts in the morning. So it's a good idea to make the body used to it.

Morning 100% I hate evening runs. Why. Its like in the morning the atmosphere is lighter fresher unclutterd and the evening feels heavy and stale from all that human activity through the day.

I'm used to training in the evening after work. I believe that high quality recovery (sleep), pretty close after training gives better benefits, than training in the morning and let the body wait whole day till night to go to sleep and fully recover and rebuild. Ofcource active recovery during day helps also, but the sleep is the most important part of the recovery and rebuild process.
