Youkai is neither a ghost nor a monster, but something that is created and passed down through the stories of our ancestors in order for the Japanese people to correct their minds and hearts in their daily lives. Even though we cannot see them, they are important for us to live together in awe of nature, tools, and phenomena. This is the reason why we can cope with natural disasters without fuss. The idea that if we harm others or other living things, it will surely come back to us is not a belief, but an unconscious flow that has been engraved in our hearts. This mentality is often strongly expressed in anime and special effects movies. It is the very form of the Japanese people themselves, and Japanese people subconsciously know this. This is the reason why harmony can be achieved regardless of religion.

No amount of CGI could make a film like this. In fact, no one has made one since.

It is a wonderful movie from a wonderful book of short stories. It is 4 tales of ancient Japan. Particularly strange and beautiful is "Hoichi, the Earless" and I forget the name of the first story, but it scared the bleep out of me. I own the book, but sure would like to see the film again, particularly around Halloween.

Fantastic indoor set design and lighting. At times a very experimental soundtrack I think influenced by No theater. One of the best films I've ever seen to capture the many layers of Japanese art, literature and culture.

it was assembled with a level of care and attention to detail that's seldom, if ever, witnessed these days, a seminal work. Baffles me why people won't watch "old" films but it also explains, in part, why modern films are (mostly) so terrible.

@@RaoulLeDegueu The first one. So spectral, dark and unsettling...the repeated sound of her loom clacking in the otherwise absolute silence of the decaying old house literally made me jump several times....it's a classic ghost story and much more. The actress who played the wife was beyond brilliant. You feel so sorry for her, but as the story progresses, you gradually begin to find her absolutely terrifying.

I went to his house in Matsue, Hern that is. The one he lived in before he moved to Tokyo, it's almost right under Matsue castle. It struck me as a very esteemed location to be so close to the castle. I'm currently reading a collection on his lesson known stories. It seems amazing to me that he discovered Japan later in life (I think he was about 40 when he moved there?) but still was curious and thirsty for new experiences. A lot of people would probably set in their ways and not as open as he was.

Many people expect him to make movies based on novels like The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, The Last Unicorn and Two Hearts by Peter S. Beagle and The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King.

I still wonderful if the forest full of eyes was somehow influence by Hitchcock's Spellbound. These are the only two movies I can think of which used this original scenery solution.
