John, do you remember when you were just about to get 1000 subscribers? I do, I've been subscribed since way back then. I only bring it up because until recently when I've been going back and re-watching many of your old videos. I didn't notice before but your videos have gotten so much better! Not only better camera, better sounds, but you are so much more smooth and natural. It's more like being in the shop with you then ever before. Keep up the great work!. Looking forward for you to get 1 million.

I wish I would have seen this video when it came out originally but I have one suggestion for John and anyone who sees this comment in the future and that is instead of hitting the dies with your hammer you are much better off hitting the dies with a brass hammer or a heavy rubber mallet. The reason for this is to save your dies from getting all banged up and distorted. I really love both of the designs on these guillotine tools. Thanks for sharing.

John: Tip for the Cloverdale hardy hole attachment that is quick/easy and involves no welding. Grab a length of square bar of the desired size, drill and tap 1/2 UNC hole in the center. Then drill a separate hole for the split pin to go into (the one you removed). The pin is to prevent rotation of the square bar, alignment only. I ended up welding a shank onto another plate like you were discussing and only figured it out afterwards.

I have tapped holes in my 5/8" thick bench top to suit various vices and their position. I use set screws in the holes from underneath in holes not being used and ground flat to stop junk getting in the threads and maintain a flat work surface. Nice tools John, I need one :-)

I was told the pin is also for using a longer bolt into a threaded Hardie shank to keep it from rotating on the shank. Drill a little hole for the pin on the shank.

You'd only need to use one fence at a time on Jerry's tool, letting the metal expand as expected. If it starts to stretch unevenly to one side, flip the piece over or come in from the other side (assuming a centered fuller).

That "knife Fuller" tool might be a good thing to have to make wood working chisel for wood turners. and maybe getting a spoon knife bend started. Those are all things you probably don't want to spread and need to have the curve very consistently in the center.

My oh my have I missed your videos. I've been on a break from forging and watching your vids for almost a year (KZfaq stopped showing me your videos because I didn't watch enough). I've been subscribed since you did the first making hammers videos. I do remember commenting youd gone a bit cheesy with an intro for one of your videos about a year ago and I missed the more human organic way you used to do your videos. My goodness have you nailed it while I've been gone. Vid, sound, camera angle, lighting and still as friendly and human as you first were. You always used to do end result outros or photos but this one was smooth, lovely music and smooth editing. Not cheesy and the best place for that kind of thing. I'm sure they won't always be necessary or you have time but it just shows how far you've come. And quite telling that I'm not the only post on this video saying this. I will enjoy catching up with all I've missed.

I've recently bought a new touch mark. Looking at it, I was trying to think up a way to insert it into a guillotine tool so I could get a better, more even blow on it to make it neater. Something like that fullering guillotine would be perfect! It would have to be more narrow for the touch mark though.

Very cool!! I'm trying to work out a guillotine tool made from a section of steel I beam, the problems I have are that I'm only using a 20kg anvil and I'm not able to lift heavy thing, due to my back. I did have a brain wave of making the tool so it sita on the floor (not on the anvil) and I use a length of I beam that means that the metal I'm working sits at the same hight as my anvil. I then buy a long enough leagth that also ove 20kg!!! Problem solved as I don't even have to move the guillotine to use it 😁 Thanks for the video 👍

Good review however, that central Fuller tool doesn't look like it works very well, because as you using the Fuller, you were spreading the material outwards and binding the outside fences.. so that's not a very good design.. also I noticed that you covered up the top of the block with ur hand where you were hitting with the hammer and it started to deform so that was not hardened or tempered very well...next time, please be honest with your review. And tell it like it is.. but, again thanks for the review.. I do enjoy your show. The Flying J..

Hello, Thank you for your input. I made that tool. The guides are not intended to be drawn up tightly to the edges of the blade like barriers because blades are hardly ever straight and the steel expands when heated and widens when fullered. In fact, one guide works well. They are more for a visual sighting or aid, like the shoulders down both sides of a highway. The actual fuller groove becomes your best method of sighting to the tip after the first few hits. I have been thinking of putting a kind of blade tip sliding carrier on the backside as an aid like a front sight on a rifle also. I too, was surprised at the striking end deformation. It is 4140 steel left untreated because if you did harden them, the striking end would have to be tempered back down anyway to prevent brittleness. The fuller end is contacting red hot steel so any temper you do put in would be changed over a short period of time. Air hardening steels such as S7 would be ideal, except for the cost. I make a lot of dies and I have not yet seen that happen on the 4140 steel, treated or not. I appreciate and welcome your criticisms and ideas and I will take them into consideration as I improve current tools and make other tools. Thanks, Jerry
