The wild 1970s. The search for new consciousness, spirituality and sexual liberation. In England, the young Hugh hears of spiritual teacher Bhagavan Shree Rajneesh from listening to a cassette. He travels to India on a journey in search of himself. The young Indian girl Sheela is being taken to the charismatic guru by her father and knows at the age of twenty-one that being with this man is everything she wants.
In his ashram in Poona, Bhagwan has his disciples practice meditation and tantric sex to attain higher consciousness.
Hugh witnesses the rise of the guru while serving as his bodyguard. Sheela becomes his personal secretary and the powerful boss of Bhagwan‘s model commune, which grows up in the mountains of Oregon during the 80s. It is here that five thousand young people attempt to create an ideal community by way of example to the world. The guru, who is derided in the Western press throughout the 70s as a „sex-guru“, makes headlines with his Rolls-Royces. The dream ends as a nightmare with Hugh suffering a spiritual breakdown and Sheela in prison. When did it all begin to go wrong?
»GURU - Bhagwan, His Secretary & His Bodyguard« - a spiritual journey to the depths and shallows of the human soul.

There will no one ever be like Osho. Just look at all the work he did. The number of books he wrote. He spoke and spoke. He fought. He had the guts and the intelligence to shake people out of their comfort zone. Moreover, His organization is still alive. It is not dead. They have many ashrams. He taught everyone how to look within. He was a great teacher. One of the best teachers' world has ever seen. His work is of enormous proportions. His work in his own language Hindi is never-ending. A true soul trying to steer people in the right direction.

I really don't know what happened at that time. I was just a kid around early 1980s. But his teachings, especially ones I can see from youtube, are quite helpful, easy to follow, and effective as well. In one of his youtube videos, he says that thought will only complicate the matter, just stay silent and witness whatever is there without any judgement. This is really practical insight into human mind. And that Sheela grandma, with all due respect, she says she has been around him without meditation. It's like saying I've been in quantum physics without practicing mathematics. Just a nonsense. Anyway I agree that he was controversial. And lessons I learned here is never trust any human mind that worships a person.

If you work, and get just money for it, you can actually be happy with it, and help those who aren't being payed anything, and it's not their fault, and are being crucified like me. Besides, lots of sannyassins worked a lot. They had one fantastic thing: they worked for love, and weren't jealous of those for whom it was the time to rest, seek, or do other good things which don't necessarily bring money. Jealousy is terrible. Love. I actually absolutely deserve to rest!

"When did it start to go wrong?" When Bagwan decided to accept devotees. Gurus are often spiritual vampires - feeding off the energy given to them by their followers which is mirrored back to the followers when they are within the "guru's" sphere of influence, so giving them the impression that it is the guru himself who has this power. To love another is one of the strongest feelings we can have; to worship another is a sin.People put on pedestals are 'false idols'. In Universal Law we are ALL equal; in man's law, some animals are more equal than others.

Bhagwan had lots of bodyguards. I was at the ashram in Poona in the 70's and I remember seeing Hugh sitting in a chair at the back entrance to the Ashram most days, not guarding Bhagwan. The last time I saw Hugh was on the Ranch in Oregon and he was doing menial labor. He wasn't anywhere near Bhagwan. Watch that too! When the ego feels hurt, just watch it, look at it. Gain some distance from it. That's what meditation, awareness, witnessing is all about.

All i can see on the comments section is that all this people that are against OSHO, are actually unhappy people, altough they don't realise it, because they never had experienced true hapiness. I am not against anyone, i'm just pointing out what is obvious. Man will always reject what is not understanding. I'm saying this because I do not see a single person that has tried Osho's meditation technics and became disappointed. To trully contradict his teachings you have to first try them by meditating and then to say that are no good. Osho changed my life with his words and taught me how to be happier and for this i will love him forever. :)

I’m not sure folks are as upset with his teaching as much as they are the actions their group took while in Oregon. I think if they’d not tried to displace a small town, set off a bomb or poison the folks in The Dalles, they’d have been fine. Oregon kind of prides herself in being unique and the Rajneeshees somewhat fit into that in the 80’s. DB Cooper, sasquatch, slugs and the Rajneeshees were some of the things we’d highlight when talking about the state back in the day. It was fun when a huge contingency of followers would come through PDX. The airport was awash with red, orange and pink. Them being different wasn’t an issue, certainly nothing to do with his teachings. But then came the underhanded way they took over Antelope (bussed in homeless people, registered them as voters, win the election, then later kicked them out and made them homeless again) with rigged elections. Then there was the bio-terror attack in The Dalles where they tried to target voters so as to win the election in Wasco County. I mean, giving two County Commissioners water laced with Salmonella and then using it to poison the salad bars of 10 restaurants (making over 750 people desperately sick) is no small thing. I always wondered how Sheela went from being such a loving person to being so ruthless. And I don’t understand why they couldn’t have found a place where they didn’t have to worry about clashing with townsfolk. I mean, there’s plenty of places, even ghost towns, that they could have purchased. They certainly had the money. Anyhow, I’m not an angry or unhappy person. I grew up in Oregon and recall those times. And I lived in India so have a good appreciation for the cultural and spiritual aspects of religious communities like Rajneeshpuram (what they re-named Antelope, Oregon) and the teachings of Osho. It’s just that the behavior didn’t match the teaching. I suppose I mostly think that it’s really sad. Anyhow, all the best to you.

There is no need for a technique and baghwan would tell you that. The ones you call happy base their happiness on money and who they surround them selves with. I know what this all is, and I can tell you, I may not have all that makes up happiness in your standard in a state of mind but I am happiest. Especially to know he is over, and we are good to find guru in us all. Not in another man, his writing or things.

A lot of what happened in America is character assasination but sheela did not come across as a very dignified woman in her interviews with the American media! She was after all his right hand woman !In Osho's own words" she ran the Oregan Ashram like a facist camp" what more can you say ? Simply listening to words is not enough,you have to see them being put in practice!

I agree. Most people who are angry at him have never even read a single book of his. Why do we pass judgement before we read anything he actually said? Osho said hate and love are two sides of the same coin. One can turn into the other at any moment. So if someone hates Osho, that shows that deep down, there is an interest in him, an interest in having some kind of connection or relationship, whether one of anger or love. If people REALLY didn't care about Osho, they would be neutral. They would simply ignore him. But they can't. That shows something deep inside their consciousness. Maybe they should examine WHY they are angry at him. So he had 90 Rolls Royces. Instead of getting angry at "him and his cars," why not ask yourself, "Why am I angry just because he got some cars?" Go into your own consciousness before you judge others.

@@danielt.4330 ....all your talk of 'anger', what utter nonsense. It's not about anger, it's about discernment. There are many of us who have read many of his books, I know many of his sanayasins, the mother of my daughter in Germany is one. I've twice been to Pune (have you ?) yet I still think that whilst the guy is certainly something of a genius he is more a highly entertaining entrepreneur than any sort of true guru. Why on earth people feel the need to latch onto these gurus (especially dead ones) is beyond me. As you suggest yourself, go into your own consciouness, none of this nonsense is necessary for that.
@danielt.4330
@danielt.4330 5 жыл бұрын
@cspace1234nz I agree, you don't HAVE to "latch" onto a guru. You should just go into your own consciousness. But Osho never said you should "latch" onto him, as in, to be dependent on him. In fact, his entire commune was one of pure fun. If it helps people to go into their own consciousness while celebrating, enjoying, taking things non-seriously, that's great. I think you should actually read some of his books to get an idea of what he actually said. I feel like 80-90% of what people think about Osho is pure hearsay. In fact, many times, he says exactly the opposite in his transcripts.

@Bidhan Poudel Truth remains truth, so there's nothing "new" to say. However, I do think he expounded extremely beautifully for a contemporary audience. @Bidhan Poudel There is no such a thing as "holy." These are all mental constructs that come about from cultural and subjective norms. Over 750 people were poisoned at 10 different restaurants with Salmonella as were two County Commissioners whose water they laced with the bio-culture. It was when some of them started to plan the assassination of one of our US attorneys that Bhagwan himself phoned authorities. I’m not saying Bhagwan was part of all the awful things that were planned or executed (there was also a bombing). He cooperated and was never charged. But to infer these events are lies isn’t right.

Both Sheela and Shiva in essence betrayed Osho and the commune. That they tell their story is good to hear. Yet this documentary is seriously biased in that they are the main voices. There are many many more voices that will paint a different picture. Thus, as I was there on the Ranch, I can say the distortion in this docu, as interesting as it is, is cleverly intended to mislead and misinform by exclusion. The tremendous beauty and importance of this communal experiment cannot be understated. It has set a precedent for the future of humanity.

Slave conditions, encouraging people to make donations which could cripple someone's future livelihood whilst the leader has 90 rolls royce's, the guru sleeping with people's girlfriends, attempted murders, a chemical lab which maliciously poisoned the populace, sedating homeless people without their consent which is a gross violation of trust, etc... Just admit that you were fooled by this cult and move on...There was a reason why the commune failed as soon as Baghwan left. Because it was, at its fundamental core, based on worshipping an idol/hero, not really about the actual teachings. You even had to wear a necklace with Baghwan's face on it! If it was about the actual teachings, the commune would have survived after Baghwan left. You fell prey to a cult leader.

Frank he did not have wealth. Yes he enjoyed wealth which was only on loan ( as it is for all of us) Nothing was registered in his name, that's why he could enjoy it. The 99 Rolls Royces were auctioned off for a song. That did not sadden him because they did not belong to him. Disciples gave gifts for different reasons: some to buy favour or position (power), others in hope of realising a later financial gain on their gift, and some out of pure gratitude.

@@ThoArtOne so I guess I must have attracted enough attention studying this man .. The burning question in my mind was "Why?" So strong in fact that I was afraid my individual identity would be annihilated. I didn't really want to, but I turned my back on that energy because that is not my path. I have responsibilities in my own life. However I did at least then, understand what would draw people to the man. I mean I guess that's the whole point right, to be one. But I was just not prepared at the time. I have since opened chakaras on my own, in a much more tame way. It was still awesome, to be able to feel whole and fully connected to creation. Sheela, the cocktail waittress, never had any use for that, but loved power over others. Murder was justified in her eyes when it came to her empire. When she spread biological weapons at those restaurants, she didn't know how it would affect pregnant women and their babies, for example, and she didn't care. I have yet to see any admission of shame and evil. After all this, people still believe in this cult? How many would they have to kill for people to say no?

real Hinduism is never about worshipping anyone or anything. you only should worship your ownself but at the same time you should respect every single living being on this earth. there is a fine boarder between respect someone and worshipping someone which many get confius and carried away. many real yogies dont comes in expensive cars or wear expensive suits infact most real yogies hide themselves in jungles from public. Hinduism as the world oldest religion been miss used by many for their own benefits and cheat genuine followers.

I wish I had 96 Rolls Royces - need all that boot space to store copies of Guru's Teachings of Exalted Enlightenment which I need to sell at 20 dollars a head in order to fund my zeal to create a commune in Nebraska. I will be the guru of course although I don't really like having to don a beard.

I think by "Buddha field energy" you mean hysteria and simply being manic. Not everybody is stupid and gullible, that's the real ignorance. He had some interesting and entertaining things to say and some interesting therapies for his time but that's all really.

By the mean hysteria and being manic,you mean his dynamic meditation ? as youve seen people letting themselves go wild and you think that could possibly be the buddha feild of energy ? you try lying down and meditating,what happens .your body bugs you,,the idea of jumping around and all that is the same as like when you was a kid and you ran for agess then lay down and looked at the stars,,after all that effort when you lay down your body doesant get in the way..then if you stop thinking"which is impossable but can happen" you experience being everything in the univrse as you have droped your ego and your view of the world..@@cspace1234nz

@@jivanbansi9640 ....now you're just trying to imitate what I've written because you are utterly unoriginal, hence why you have a mindset that allows you to follow clowns. You yap on about meditation yet that's just another function of your mind, if you had ever once truly 'experienced' the silence you would know it cannot 'grow' or die for that matter and would simply remain silent. But you can't can you because not only do you feel the need to search by preaching your shit message to me but you simply don't know.
