When General Macarthur landed in Leyte to liberate the Philippines. Desmond Doss was there! He was wounded and used a broken butt of a rifle to splint his shattered arm. Then crawled over 300 yards of rough terrain to an aide station. He is credited with saving many lives that day too.

Is that really true? Can you sight any references of a book or magazine about that? I've read several books about his life and none of them mentioned that. I want it to be true, but I also want to read the account as it happened. I even watched the Documentary about him called The Conscience Objector. I also read the Unlikeliest Hero book. I can't find that anywhere. Plus right after the events of Hackshaw Ridge, he immediatley was evacuated suffering a left arm fracture and had 20 pieces of shrapnel in his body then suffered from Tuberculosis. Not exactly the shape to assist Gen MacArthur in another rescue. Very curious.

He also contracted tuberculosis there and after he was discharged he couldn't see his son for five years until they got the tuberculosis cured.

Doss served on both Guam and the Philippines where he was awarded 2 Bronze Stars both with "v" devices for valor. But, Doss was never wounded before the action depicted in this movie. Here's his Medal of Honor citation: "He was a company aidman when the 1st Battalion assaulted a jagged escarpment 400 feet high. As our troops gained the summit, a heavy concentration of artillery, mortar, and machine-gun fire crashed into them, inflicting approximately 75 casualties and driving the others back. Pfc. Doss refused to seek cover and remained in the fire-swept area with the many stricken, carrying them one by one to the edge of the escarpment and there lowering them on a rope-supported litter down the face of a cliff to friendly hands. On 2 May, he exposed himself to heavy rifle and mortar fire in rescuing a wounded man 200 yards forward of the lines on the same escarpment; and two days later he treated four men who had been cut down while assaulting a strongly defended cave, advancing through a shower of grenades to within eight yards of enemy forces in a cave's mouth, where he dressed his comrades' wounds before making four separate trips under fire to evacuate them to safety. On 5 May, he unhesitatingly braved enemy shelling and small-arms fire to assist an artillery officer. He applied bandages, moved his patient to a spot that offered protection from small-arms fire, and, while artillery and mortar shells fell close by, painstakingly administered plasma. Later that day, when an American was severely wounded by fire from a cave, Pfc. Doss crawled to him where he had fallen 25 feet from the enemy position, rendered aid, and carried him 100 yards to safety while continually exposed to enemy fire. On 21 May, in a night attack on high ground near Shuri, he remained in exposed territory while the rest of his company took cover, fearlessly risking the chance that he would be mistaken for an infiltrating Japanese and giving aid to the injured until he was himself seriously wounded in the legs by the explosion of a grenade. Rather than call another aidman from cover, he cared for his own injuries and waited five hours before litter bearers reached him and started carrying him to cover. The trio was caught in an enemy tank attack and Pfc. Doss, seeing a more critically wounded man nearby, crawled off the litter and directed the bearers to give their first attention to the other man. Awaiting the litter bearers' return, he was again struck, this time suffering a compound fracture of one arm. With magnificent fortitude he bound a rifle stock to his shattered arm as a splint and then crawled 300 yards over rough terrain to the aid station. Through his outstanding bravery and unflinching determination in the face of desperately dangerous conditions Pfc. Doss saved the lives of many soldiers. His name became a symbol throughout the 77th Infantry Division for outstanding gallantry far above and beyond the call of duty.”

He was such a modest man, his son never knew what his Dad did is WWII. He never knew his Dad won the Medal of Honor. Not until an author showed up wanting to write his story. I heard of Desmon Doss in a comic book when I was around 9 or 10. Which was 1969 or 1970. It was a comic book. I never thought it was about a real person. Years later I read his book. This man was something else. They left some of the things he did out of the movie. Because they thought if they put them in people wouldn't believe it. The only conscientious objector too ever be awarded the Medal of Honor. Our countries highest award. Contrary to the movie. He earned the respect of his fellow soldiers before Okinawa. He also was awarded two bronze stars before that. One for his actions on Guam, and the other for his actions in the Philippines.
@alaneskew2664

And to think that they had to tone it down because the real story is far more amazing. Almost unbelievable. He did all that while suffering from tuberculosis at half of his lung capacity. The man was a walking miracle. And one of the very few instances I think the Congressional Medal of Honor wasn't enough.

His autobiography of his life was one of the first books I gave my daughter to read many years ago. The one thing about this movie that is absolute and 100% is that his Christian faith, the reality that “Only one life, it will soon be passed, only what’s done for Christ will last.“ Was overwhelmingly his driving force. Thanks for your very very precious heartfelt reaction.

That is quite true. When I think of the stories my grandfather told me I am forced to rethink the situations that cause me to complain--they are nothing. On my thirtieth birthday my family and some friends got together for dinner at Bahama Breeze. On my grandfather's 30th birthday his unit was taking up combat positions on New Guinea in the South Pacific.

I like how you're wearing camo for a war movie. Mel Gibson goes for authenticity. And what makes this movie so damn great is it has something for everything and everyone. Romance, human interest, courage, and shows all the horror and all the glory that war has to offer. The tagline was "One of the greatest heroes in WWII never fired a shot."

Great reaction continuation! Two other world War II stories I recommend are: "Valkyrie" the 2008 film includes a very front loaded international cast led by Tom Cruise. It is a true story about the 1944 plot to assassinate Hitler. Finally, I recommend "The Pianist." Another great, but Harrowing film about the Holocaust. It was released in 2002. The Main Character is played by Adrien Brody, who would win an Oscar for his role in the film. I warn you it is very Harrowing. Not a pleasant film to see. But also like Schindler's list, a very accurate depiction of the general events surrounding the Holocaust.

It can be hard to watch. But, it's good to watch. And appreciate what those did before us, to safeguard the future. Then when someone's day is ruined because their cell phone battery died, you can look at them and put it in perspective. I hope when you're done with a movie like this, you hug someone, get some chocolate, take care of your mental health. It's good to remember these men, and these events. Doesn't mean you need to live depressed by it. Pretty sure many of these men (and women) don't want the world to come to a halt for them. Just to be remembered.

The number 75 was decided because he estimated around 50 while others said 100, so they split the difference for the number to put on his Medal of Honor citation. Later analysis by the Army estimated that the true number was just over 100.

THE DEFINITION OF LOVE: "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement." Romans 5:1-11. Also John 3:16-17...
