Both of my parents came from Hainan Island and now we are residing in Singapore. My parents used to visit their hometown once every year during the Ching Ming period but because of the pandemic, they have not been able to go back for the last 2 Ching Ming.
They are 90+ and they know that they might not have any chance to go back because of pandemic and also they are getting weaker. I thought I should do something for them, at least learned how to make the rice dumpling during this festive season.
The dumpling is basically almost the same as the regular cantonese dumpling except that we use banana leaves and maybe a lot more ingredients because the leaves are quite big. After cooking, the rice has a nice banana leaves fragrance which is a pleasant bonus when I first tried it.

我的双亲来自海南岛而我是土生土长的新加坡人。自我懂事以来，我的父母几乎每年清明都回海南岛探亲。但是由于疫情泛滥，他们这两年都没法回去。 他俩年事已高，已经90多了，即便疫情过了，我想他们的身体也无法承受这长途跋涉了。
为了 解决他们的思乡之苦，去年我想为他们做笠， 但是我这个苯手还真学不会。我真的还没办法编那个笠啊。所以，我只好另想办法，终于学会了这个蕉叶粽子。
蕉叶粽子，也称之为贡粽 （阿娘是这么说的）竹叶在海南岛不常见，所以他们就改用蕉叶，但是蕉叶蛮大的，所以他们就比一般的粽子大。为什么必须有七种料，我阿娘也说不上来，就是祖传的，我也没办法考证其它海南家族的传统是否一样？（如果有谁知道请留言） 但是干虾子，干鱿鱼是不可少，因为我阿娘家原是捕鱼为生的，直到二战我的外公奋战死后，家业也散了。革命时期，舅舅们都从医了。但是我阿娘的家族还是遵从渔夫之家的习俗。
蕉叶裹着糯米团，煮出来的饭有淡淡的香蕉叶味，是另有一番风情，另一番滋味，这就是我阿娘思念的味道。
