In this week's how-to home tutorial I share how I built a dust collector for my shop by taking a Harbor Freight dust collector and upgrading it with the Oneida Super Dust Deputy XL Cyclone Separator to create a dust collection system that I am happy with. Supplies + links below! ⤵
I am getting 753 CFM after 10ft of flex hose and nothing but air gets past the cyclone separator.

Thank you for this. I just used some of these steps to mount my filter and customize the filter top and blower intake to use 6" duct collars. The use of rivets to attach to the blower was key to avoid interference with the fan.

Second, you gave full account of installation, all of the parts used, their sources, and answered all of the questions. Third, you edited for terrific, brief clarity. Thank you.

'scuse ME, but of what value is a reverse oriented blower fan? This system will be a LOT more efficient in moving air if you stick with the same directional blower vanes. There is even a sticker on the housing indicating air direction flow and the vanes SHOULD be curved in the same direction as the replaced blower. Major screw up here. WHo sold you this replacement blower?

Love this. I built something very similar using an old 1-stage 1hp Grizzly and Super Dust Deputy that has worked great for about 15 years-even installed a larger impeller which made a big difference. Mine is mounted on a mobile stand but too cumbersome to move-the wall mount system used here is better. Having a huge outflow filter surface area is key to maintain the air flow. A way to clean the filter to keep impedance low would be a big improvement, but the cyclone is so efficient (and I’m so lazy?) that I’ve only cleaned it a few times.

Nice video, You inspired me to use my wind indicator I already had for sailing to measure CFM!!! I would suggest people start by making a simple manometer to read the static pressure. That would cost virtually nothing. It's so funny that Harbor Freight tools either become parts for really nice systems, or need a lot of mods to become good machines. A lot of these things would cost very little at the factory (like a better impeller), and would let them make a "Pro Line" of tools and make a lot more money.

Impeller blades are backwards, you are losing about 1/2 suction.
@peter_kelly
@peter_kelly 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrCarrizojim Rikon designed their impeller intentionally this way as reverse curve blades create greater static pressure using significantly less energy. Forward-facing blades will create greater air speed and less static pressure and the trade off isn’t worthwhile on a 115v motor of that size.

Once you have removed the impeller you the can remove the 4 bolts that hold the shroud and then you can turn the shroud so that the original motor mount can be used to anchor the unit to the wall. Just did that today. Waiting for the dust deputy and filter. Great build. Thanks for sharing. Hank

Thanks for pointing that out Hank. That is one of the only things I might go back and change about the build. I didn't realize I needed to/could rotate the motor with the four bolts behind the impeller until it was too late. I borrowed the puller tool to remove the impeller and had already returned the tool once I made the realization. Hope your dust collector build goes smoothly.

This is exactly the mod I am making to my HF DC for my shop this year. My build is still at the infancy stage. Only the HF DC and Powermatic 4" X 20' flex hose so far. Taking your valuable time to list links to the parts and price breakdown for this build in invaluable. Taking the comparative CFM reading before and after the mod was extremely helpful as well. This video was very well made showing all aspects of the mod from start to finish. I would say, of all the videos I've seen of this mod on KZfaq, your is by far the best. Thank you again!!!!

Great video! I've spent a while trying to figure out how to improve my setup, but did not know about the impeller upgrade, so thanks! At 3:35 in the video -- the HVAC flange seems like it might restrict the airflow a bit as it is mounted inside the SDD instead of on the outside. Not sure if there's a way to fix that though or how much it matters. (Similar issue at the filter connection.)

Great build!! I've been thinking about doing the same for my 1.5 HP Jet DC1100. But trying to use the large pleated filter (20"x25") that came with it would be a pain. Or... maybe not. Questions: What is the measurement from the wall to the front of the Dust Deputy? How did you size the filter? How do you empty the barrel?

Excellent video. I'm just starting to build my HF DC system for my basement work area and I'm leaning very hard towards your design. Bouncing between 5" and 6" ducting. Also Questioning the 6" coming into the top of the filter and blowing straight down. What is that impact on the small plastic bag you have at the bottom? Isn't the force of that air blowing straight down into the bag? I know you said there wasn't much dust in the bag but could that be because it's blown back up into the filter? Thanks!

Also, for grounding your dust collector, did you connect a copper wire from the base of the unit around or through the cyclone part of the collector to the metal? As I understand it, it needs a continuous ground throughout the system. I'll be using metal duct piping all the way instead of pvc piping.

(3hp good) you work with what you have I'm hooked up with cheaper 4in pipes and works OK. (actually very happy 6 years now) Sooo fellas, what is the part number for that tasty impeller, have to have one!! GOT IT .... Part 21 / P60-200-22 I do like your set up not too big not to small. I run the air out a hole in my garage, no filter to replace or clean. MDF board is the true test for these units. great set up !!! One more thing... try and use the least amount of flex hose as possible, it kills airspeed. You can add a small window to the bucket for dust monitoring too.

My delta blower is similar to the harbor freight blower. I was concerned changing the motor mount from horizontal to vertical. I was wondering if the motor and fan bearings were good for any direction of mounting instead of the design setup? I mounted my unit in the same orientation as factory setup. That's not a worry for me as the breaker servicing the motor is 30 amps. I know this video was a while ago but curious it your filter was big enough to allow filtration and also air escape so that the small bag doesn’t blow off. The filter you used is smaller than others systems I’ve seen so curious if it provided enough airflow. Any changes you would make to the system if you could do it all over again? Great content. Thanks.

I wondered what impellar you were using. There is some discussion on LumberJocks re: this Central Machinery Dust Collector with the Rikon impeller . Have you measured the amp draw with different gates open? I'll look into your videos to see your ducting. The DC from harbor Frieght has a @ 5 inch port. Good luck!

Ya, the Rikon impeller works great with the Harbor Freight Dust Collector. I haven't had a chance to take detailed measurements of the amp draw with different gates open. From what I can tell, the initial impeller ramp up when the motor is first turned on draws the most amps. I was able to change the stock 5 inch port to a 6 inch on the Harbor Freight DC to increase air flow.

How do you clean the cartridge filter? I'm considering doing something similar to this but I'm not understandig how you would go about cleaning out the filter? Just bang on the sides of the filter?
@GrayHouseStudio

+Chris Scott I've only had to clean it out once since the build and I used a shopvac to blow air into the filter before vacuuming up all.

Love the notion of improving airflow by changing out the blade! I'm about 6 weeks away from this very same project... and am already planning to follow in your footsteps. Question: I don't have the need for a 6" main line. Is there any value-add to changing the blade if I'm going to maintain the original 4" line size? Cheers!
@GrayHouseStudio
@GrayHouseStudio 7 жыл бұрын
+Jim Robinson I would say yes. Even with the 4" duct you will see a increase in CFM. Plus, the different impeller design functions better under pressure so it should help keep CFM up with runs of 4" because the smaller duct generates more resistance.

Is there any issue with changing the orientation of the motor shaft from horizontal to vertical? Are the motor's bearings up to it [normal load vs thrust load]?
@GrayHouseStudio
@GrayHouseStudio 7 жыл бұрын
+Benny Hannah a I can't do any real tests but most dust collectors are setup with the motor at that orientation. As long as it is level vertical or horizontal there isn't any weird inertia as the impeller spins. Also, either way there is horizontal pressure on the bearing from the force of the air being pulled through the blower.

Nice design. I have watched your video 2 or 3 times. Who would have thought reversing the veins would get more air and less noise. too deep for me. I have a Jet I want to do the same thing to. The Jet has a very large filter. Why the drop from 40 to less than 20? Does the 10' hose cut the air in half? Is the filter restricting the air?

Just did this impeller upgrade on my HF unit last week. Running only the blower housing with a 6" inlet was pushing 17 amps, and the breaker in the basement was humming. Like you, I also reached out to Oneida but they recommended a SDD (not XL), so I bought it. When I attach the SDD to the blower housing (no filter yet) amps drop to 13-ish. A 2hp 70% efficient motor should be drawing 16 amps under full load, so this tells me already the system isn't operating as efficiently as it should. As a result I believe the SDD, while rated for less than 3HP units, actually ends up significantly restricting flow, with only a 5" inlet port, at least in the case of the modified HF system. So, I ordered an XL to try that out, and whatever one ends up working the best I'll keep. The other will end up on ebay. As my first youtube video, I may document the experiment between the two SDD's for all those who may be interested.

Am I seeing this right? Based on the orientation of the blower scroll housing, the motor turns clockwise when looking into the intake, so the HF impeller has forward-curved blades, while the Rikon replacement has rear-curved? I would imagine that, in addition to providing better static head pressure, the Rikon would be much quieter than the stock impeller.
@GrayHouseStudio

That is correct. I was surprised to see the Harbor Freight Dust Collector design when I opened it up. I definitely got a more consistent result on multiple machines with the new impeller.
