Hey Guys ... what I was speaking to wasn't so much a hot check as my standard warm up procedure before I ride ... pick up ...start... idle 30 seconds ...back on jiffy stand ... pretrip walk around ... lights indicators rattles... where the hell did I put my gloves ... find gloves ... back in bike and ride off ... it was more aimed at the 30 seconds of straight up to prevent the ejection of oil into the sump .... I have the same routine every time ... I ride year round as long as there is no snow on the road ... I try to dress for the wind speed chill calculator...lol

In 50 years of riding, the M8 is the most difficult engine to get a consistently accurate oil level. I check mine hot after more than 40 minutes running. I put it on the side stand, clean the dip stick, replace it, stand the bike upright, put it back on the stand and pull the dip stick. Check it on the hot - upright, scale. BTW I don't think running the bike for two minutes constitutes hot oil. Keep up the great videos.

Thanks for the add. 👍 That is a perfect way to do a hot check, as long as the oil is getting up to around 200 F. Many folks prefer doing a cold check before riding, and not to mess with a hot dipstick, etc. That is what this video is describing. Either way works fine.

Thanks again... you guys are awesome. The hot check for me is rarely consistent. I like the idea of checking it cold before every ride. So far, my temp/level HD is working when cold. Gauge reads exactly where the oil level is at cold. It always reads over filled when checking hot. The manual says to let it idle on jiffy stand for two minutes. Then let it sit for two minutes before checking. The temp/dipstick still reads over filled. When I pull the stick, it is completely covered in oil. You can see oil stuck between the fork where the sensors are. I am going to the cold check for now on. Less of a headache!

Wow you guys are absolutely right. I have a 2018 heritage that I have had issues with oil puking out of breather. Finally had to pump oil out till it stopped. At which point it measured up to 6 dots when completely hot and 3 dots when cold after long ride. I tied cold check the way you guys show and it is at 3 dots. I then tried how Harley says to (2!minutes on jiffy stand) and it no longer measures on the stick! Proves that quite a bit of oil does indeed get dumped into the sump when on jiffy stand and therefore causes you to overfill this way. Thank y’all so much for the info!

Could you do a video showing the correct way??? I have a friend that has a 2018 Heritage and has been having a real issue with checking the oil level on his bike. This pass week we were together in a parking lot/level ground the bike was on the jiffy stand and he pulled his dip stick, wiped it, put it back in and when he pulled it back out no oil was showing. Thanks for all of the great info!!!

I had problems getting a consistent read with my new street bob too. It would read 1/4" above add quart when cold, then be dry after I checked it after a ride. The manual says to let it idle on the jiffy stand for 2 minutes after a 30 minute ride before stopping the engine and check the oil. I tried this yesterday and it read half way between add quart and full when hot. I wish there was a more reliable way to check the oil, because slight differences in the level of your bike make a big deviance on the dipstick. I've checked the level on the jiffy stand, then slightly rocked the bike, and saw a noticeable difference in the reading. I assumed a cold reading was adequate, but after searching some forums it seems like you do need to allow the oil to get hot and circulate throughout the engine as it's designed to ensure you have the correct oil level. I think the cold level check is just to ensure there's at least enough oil to not cause damage before being able to do a hot oil check. I hope this helps. Hopefully others with more knowledge will chime in on this conversation and add more insight.
@DKCustomProducts

We will be doing that...but it is real simple. Start the bike standing straight up, not on the jiffy stand. Let it run 30-60 seconds, standing up off the stand. Shut it off, THEN put it on the stand and check the oil level. If it is at or above the add line you are good. Glad you're liking the videos. Thank you! 👍

Cold checks are perfectly fine, as long as done per the instructions in this video. There is nothing wrong with a hot check (oil at 200 F or more), but you will not get anything significantly different than a properly done cold check. If you do a cold check without starting the engine, or starting it on the Jiffy stand...that is what is can give an erroneous reading.

They told me the same thing when I bought my 21 Street bob. Just because its the manager doesn't mean anything. I let them change my oil twice at the dealership and the way they want you to check it hot is not accurate at all. I had oil coming out my intake and ruined 2 pairs of jeans thx to their idiotic advice. I waited until first thing in the morning and both times it was over the full level on a cold engine so I syringed about 2/3 of a liter out of it both times to get it between the full . I do my ownJust oil changes now for that reason. The engine is a blender when it's hot so you never get an accurate reading by checking this way or starting it up for 2 minutes on any bike.

Why don't you just check the oil cold? That way the bike has been sitting for a long period so levels will have been allowed to settle. My other question, we're always told to get the engine hot before removing plug for oil change, if you remove plug when cold the oil would have been hot before hand general after a long ride and the very hot oil would have run down to where it needs to be. I've performed it cold and I'm sure a lot more old oil came out than the 3ltrs as it required almost 4 to get back to the correct level. Be great to see you guys experiment with how much comes out from a hot engine to an engine that's been sitting for a few days. I'd like to see if more comes out on the same drain time. If it does in my mind being able to replace more of the dirty oil is better than leaving it in. Thanks guys.

On Baggers, anyway, don't know about other chassis, hot oil checks are supposed to be more accurate. Twin Cams thru M8s. So basically, for the last 23 years that's how guys(that are in the know) have been checking oil. Me included.
@joejunior1974
@joejunior1974 Жыл бұрын
I assumed a cold oil check was more reliable myself, but after further research, I think a hot oil check makes more sense. I assumed you would want all the oil to have returned to the lowest possible place before checking it. But it's more important to know that the level is adequate while all points of the engine that rely on oil are thoroughly covered. A cold level read is only adequate to ensure you don't run the engine with so little oil as to damage it before a hot reading can be done. It seems to be very important to follow the manual and ride the bike for 30 minutes under load then let it idle 2 minutes on the jiffy stand, stop the engine, and then check your level. I've experienced false level readings from killing the engine with the bike upright after a long ride and then throwing down the jiffy stand and checking the oil. The 2 minutes of idle on the jiffy stand seem to be critical to getting an accurate measurement. I wish this video had discussed this topic more thoroughly, because something as important as a proper oil level shouldn't be left to speculation.

Starting up and running 30-45 seconds is not a hot oil check. Ride the bike 30 minutes or so, then stop, stay on bike upright and let it idle for 2 minutes. Shut it off and do a hot check on the jiffy stand. Pretty damned simple. I run my 21 RGS 4 dots up from add qt level HOT on the jiffy stand. Next morning cold it will be 3 dots up from add line COLD. Trask vented trans cover for lower end venting and S&S Stealth plumbed to vent to atmosphere. 4 qts, 10oz with a new filter for an oil change every 5,000 miles. Yes. I pull it off the jiffy stand, start it up, let it run 30-45 seconds to scavenge all the oil out of the sump, into the oil tank. Then shut it off. Then put it on the Jiffy stand. Then check the oil level. It should be near the middle of the bottom and top marks.. They key is running it standing straight up, not on the stand, so that it gets the oil out of the sump.

Well now im totally confused. I check my 2019 cvo limited cold and i make sure its always at least half to 3/4 qt low.. Two reasons: 1) Checking cold consistantly gives you a starting point. Dont deviate. 2) when its checked COLD, you know that when oil gets hot that oil will expand and show you a half qt more than when cold. You now have consistency in checking your oil and just add to the half qt low mark. Never the full mark and youll be fine and your air cleaner will thank you.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 11 ай бұрын
Nothing to be confused about. Some M8's will not give an accurate read on the dipstick if they are checked without starting up for 15 seconds or more with the bike upright. This is because their can be more oil in the sump that normal with it on the Jiffy.

You are checking hot, I would go a few dots above the add line, no higher than the midway point between the top and bottom lines. You are ok with it at the add line, but you have no ""cushion", that is why I would add a bit.

Gents, I have always been told NOT to check the oil until it has run 30+ minutes to make absolutely sure the motor is up to temp. Doesn't sound like 30 seconds off the jiffy stand makes a enough heat... I check mine after a ride, and after about a minute at idle on the stand. I shut the motor off and immediately pull the stick, wipe it, and reinsert it again; when I pull it the second time, I go from THAT reading as to add or not. Does this make sense, or am I over-thinking it? Thanks for your videos and information, I watch a lot.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
That is a perfect way to do a hot check, as long as the oil is getting up to around 200 F. Many folks prefer doing a cold check before riding, and not to mess with a hot dipstick, etc. That is what this video is describing. Either way works fine.

Got a '19 slim 107ci. When I check my oil (cold), depending on which way I have my handlebar's turned, I get a different reading , as much as a dot or two on the dipstick. At first I thought I was losing it but I tried several times and sure enough,when the bars were turned one way it was dead center where it should be and when turned the other way it'd be low. Do I need a shrink ??
@DKCustomProducts

When you turn the handlebars, does it change the angle of the bike on the jiffy stand? That accounts for the different lean angle and level of oil showing on the dipstick.

@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, Thank you for your business, we appreciate it. I believe you will be well pleased with the HiFlow 606 Intake with EBS. 👍😎👍 With your 606 you already have as part of that the External Breather System. This will completely vent crankcase pressure, and no hot, oily, oxygen depleted are will be going into your intake. The only possible reason for a vented dipstick or trans cover vent is on Some older M8's (2017-2019) that have an oil pump that does not scavenge well. You do not have that, there is no need. For those with the old oll pump, the solution is to get the upgraded oil pump, because that will fix the problem. Until one does that, a band-aid to the problem might be a vented dipstick or trans vent, along with an EBS.

HD's solution for that (which has work well for me and thousands of others, is to have a primary vent. Hi DK Custom Products. I think you guys do very nice videos and will search out all I can find. Can I mention a few thoughts? I'll take that as a yes. Some of the comment makers write their crankcase oil as being put there or puked/spat/ dumped whatever, but I can't figure out how that pooled to the left oil not coming up to the pickup level is somehow unnatural when a bike is idling on its kickstand. Anyhow as well as that your teachings have mention of oil also being spat out of the head breather jets and they should be called jets because they are so small in size. I drilled one out I have in my spares box to install before I went for a 3/8'' Transmission cover vent hose taking advantage of the fluid flowing to the area of less resistance law, by fluid I mean gas. Now does an overfilled sump/tank have a connection to the cam chest through a passageway or other channel where oil can get there in large enough amounts to be forced up to the top hats in a misty state by crankcase pressure? Not having a pulled down M8 on my floor to study is a drawback on my side. And lastly why would anyone need to idle after riding to clear their bottom end, lots of left-hand sweeping turns perhaps?

Harley needs to recall all M-8 dipsticks and have the correct markings for the kickstand readings. HD needs to quit setting customers up for failure. And quit marking products up with such an outrageous profit margin. I mean damn!!
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
The dipsticks are not marked wrong. SOME, not all, bikes do not scavenge all of the oil out of the sump when on the kickstand. If the dipsticks were changed to be accurate for those bikes, then all the other bikes would not get an accurate read. Fixing the oil pump scavenging to get all but 2-4 oz out of the sump is the real solution...which they have been working on for years.
