Good info, I have always changed all 3 holes 3-4 K miles. What alot of folks do not know is clean fluids help maintain a seal better and will suspend more debris between changes I have never had leaky seals on any of my bikes

Guys, there have been many studies on this subject. I used to change my engine oil in all my vehicles @ 3 to 5K. Then I switched back in the late 90's. I started using AMSOIL and went to their extended drain intervals and began changing at roughly 20K miles. I sent off oil sample kits, and every time they came back as great. I dug even further into this. Most advanced oils are nothing like the old oils of the 50's to 80's. There was a study done where they proved people were throwing away perfectly good oil, oil that was still working great and doing what it's supposed to do. The oil companies didn't like this of course, because it was going to cut into their profits. I have a vehicle that I change the oil in every 20K miles and it is getting ready to hit 1/4 of a million miles and STILL runs great! I believe most people are still hung up on the old oil and believe it has to be changed at 5K miles. My wife's uncle had a 1970's Dodge truck that had well over half a million miles, he was a mechanic. He ALWAYS changed the filter and added a quart and that truck was still running fine when he passed away. Now I don advise anyone doing this, but I do believe the oil change intervals were done primarily for the oil companies to sell more oil! That's all I'm gonna say about this. Do what you feel is fine and do what the manufacturer says as long as the vehicle is under warranty. My bike, using AMSOIL in all 3 holes, does not get good oil thrown away because the manual says so, but my bike is an 05 Electra Glide and not under a warranty. I suggest doing a few oil samples from a reputable company and that will probably open your eyes a bit on the oil change scam.

Food for thought is by comparison to the car world. My F150 - 10k engine oil change interval recommended, my car 8k engine recommended, my old Porsche 944 15k. Years ago Consumer reports did an oil life evaluation test with cooperation from a New York City taxi cab company, as memory servers they were not able to detect any wear difference between taxis that had their oil changed at 3k and those that had their oil changed at 10k. We are sort of dealing with dueling conspiracy theories regarding the change made by Harley, I am on the 'it never was needed' side of the fence but agree with DK Custom and others that frequent oil changes certainly won't hurt anything.

There's a BIG difference between air-cooled and liquid cooled engines, where oil breakdown is concerned. Especially in hot running HD engines, that use oil to cool the pistons, etc.... A car/truck engine won't see the temps our HD engines see, and heat definitely breaks oils down, even synthetics (it just takes longer). The way I see it, it's a few bucks more for good insurance. JMHO.

So glad you put this information out there for others. I made a comment in your "transmission oil change" video about your temp dipstick and started discussing oil change intervals and how parts materials haven't changed over the years. I know when I change my Primary oil for instance (change all 3 holes every 5K), I notice a significant difference in noise, smoothness, and ease of shifting. As you say, nothing has changed over the years except EPA requirements of companies. There are notable motor builders that can back this up too!

Change mine every 3-5 thousand miles. The same as my trucks and cars, been doing that way for 34 years an haven't had any problems or issues with any of my bikes or 4 wheeled vehicles. As you stated the cleaner the crap catching magnet is the better it works and always remember to check it to make sure it's still magnetized before reinstalling it. Sometimes they can lose it if they get to much trash on them for long periods of time. As the old saying goes, " if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it." Interesting that when you take it to a dealer for an oil change, they don’t tell you if they do just the engine or if they do all three holes, but they still charge around $300 to $500 for a service regardless of your mileage. I just started changing my own oil and I think I will stick to all 3 holes every 5k miles.

Are you serious 😃 $300.00 to $500.00 for an oil change. My 93 FXRS-CONV which I have owned for 30 years and my 2010 FLHTC which I have owned for 12 years have never seen the inside of a dealership for any service ever. I was fortunate enough to meet a man when I was about 15 who taught me everything about repairs, tools mechanics on cars and motorcycles. He later went on to be general service manager of Canada for Deeley Harley Davidson which is the Canadian distributor. My neighbor had a Bentley, he was charged $1,200.00 for an oil change at the RR dealership. This is a V-8 aluminum block OHV spin off oil filter like any North American V-8, except it takes 8 quarts of oil. He had to get rid of the car for obvious reasons. I had no idea that the dealer's are practicing extortion. Oil changes are about the easiest thing to do and provides excellent maintenance. As I taught my son, the most important thing is that you check for leaks after doing it.

Once a year or 5k whichever comes first. All three holes, all the time. Own an 02 FatBoy with only 40k but still changed all three, every fall, and have had no issues whatsoever. Had my tension shoes replaced at about 27k, and was planning on replacing the Oem cam with a new one since it was being done. Tech told me there was no wear at all on the cam and to keep doing what I was doing in regards to fluid changes. Originally used only Dino oil, since Syn3 was not out yet, but somewhere over the years I switched to syn3 or similar and never looked back. Frequency is the key. Cheap investment and a couple hours a year to keep it purring 😉👍

That plan had oil change intervals at every 2500 miles plus free pick up and delivery up to 20,000 miles. I utilized everything in that plan. After the plan when I reached 20,000 miles I went to changes every 5000 miles. My bike now has 60,000 miles of smiles and I couldn’t be happier. One recall on the hydraulic clutch seal and one actuator replaced under warranty. One battery replacement. I use H-D Syn 3 as to what the Dealership does in the services.

On my 07' Fatboy I followed the owners manual on fluid changes. I have 46K+ miles on the bike now. I use AMSOIL synthetic V-TWIN engine oil 20W-50 in the engine, AMSOIL V-TWIN Synthetic Primary Fluid in the primary, & AMSOIL V-TWIN Synthetic Transmission Fluid in the transmission. I changed the engine oil @ 3K miles, primary @ 10K miles, & the transmission fluid @ 20K miles. After my last oil change (May 2022), I decided to change the primary fluid, & the transmission fluid @ 3K mile intervals, along with my engine oil change. Most of the time, I change the engine oil yearly, as I haven't been able to put many miles on my Fatboy in the last 3 years. I hope to get many more miles on my bike in 2023. Thanks guys, one of the best video's I've seen in a long time, not just on your channel; but in general as I'm a HD junkie. Boys you are correct, Canadian here and my manual says engine oil/filter every 8,000 kilometers, primary every 16,000 kilometers and tranny every 32,000 kilometers (negative the 1st service at 1,600 kilometers that change all 3 holes to keep warranty valid). I have a 2022 Street Glide Special I bought new, and do it at 4,000 kilometers (50% before their engine oil recommendation change kilometers/miles) plus the primary and tranny at the same time. It's not expensive and I love knowing I have fresh clean oil in all 3 holes.... all the time. Thanks for posting this, it's common sense really. I have to be honest I never thought of the HD carbon foot print issue to try to get customers to stretch out oil changes. I never understood my manual why such long miles between oil changes, now I know. A publicly traded company trying to lower carbon foot prints. Every day I learn. Always go with your gut feeling people. What an eye opener.

I am 82 years old, and ride a 99 EVO powered Softail Custom. Since I generally do not ride over 3 to 4,000 miles a year, I change oil with Castrol 20-50 non synthetic once a year, and change the primary and transmission with Harley transmission fluid every 2 years or so. I have 64,000 on it and it runs great, with no leaks anywhere. I always warm it up before riding as alloy cylinders need to expand to tighten the gaskets. I tried Mobil 1 synthetic once, and the base gaskets started weeping. Changed it back out to non synthetic. Stopped weeping in about 200 miles. I love my carbed EVO motor. It runs like a Shovel head with improvements. Plenty of power for an old guy to cruise the back roads around where I live. I started riding on a 1942 "45" flat head in 1955 when I was 14. And I believe he’s right my old bike gets her oil changed in all 3 holes every fall before it’s put up for the winter which is only about 2500 to 3500 most times it maybe a waste of money but I think it’s good insurance and if I can get time to ride more I would still change it about the same mileage stay safe guys

He's right! Never hurts to change engine oil. Maybe the most important thing that's usually overlooked, is change it hot in suspension ride it up and down the pike an hour or so, bring it in Hot. Drop your oil out of it as soon as you get in, let it drain for an hour or more (if you can) these are very important points concerning the longevity and cleanliness of your engine and drivetrain parts. As you may know, oil does not lose this lubricity, and when collected and left to sit in a barrel, all of the ingredients put in at the Refinery and all of these sedements and wear materials will settle to the bottom of the barrel, and over the top of that you have clean oil. That is what I run in my lawn mower and other small engines. (Not my bike) Ride Aware, & remember recycling starts @ home!

One thing that I would like to point out, is that it never hurts to change your engine oil. One thing I've noticed while reading of these comments is, that no one ever said anything about changing it hot in suspension, ride it for an hour bring it in hot and drop it all out now. Oh yeah, one question I have is if it cost more to refine a gallon of gasoline than a quart of oil, how come a quart of motor oil costs more than a gallon of gasoline?

I’m going to 5k all three holes from now on. I use synthetics, but the early breakdown of any oil & its viscosity is a reality with air cooled or oil cooled engines and the heat they produce.

I worked in the oil business for 16 years. The only way to know what is happening to your oil is to have an analysis done. This will tell you what your viscosity is, whether you have metal or any other contamination of any kind. And it doesn't matter whst temperature you are running. The analysis will tell you if you are good or not. Make your adjustments accordingly. Don't ruin your ride, but don't throw your hard earned money in the waste oil burner.

Best bet is to follow Harley Davidson Owner Manual that came with the bike. Harley has a Research & Development Team who have tested these motors & transmissions. So they have a good idea how far the drive train can go before the next scheduled maintenance interval. Kevin even stated he has had no problems with the recommended maintenance intervals. If you follow the manufacturer maintenance schedule you should not have any problems. Can anomalies occur with your bike? Sure but those are in the minority. Thanks for posting and opening up some dialog on this subject matter.

Taking the time to drain the primary and tranny when doing an oil change is too easy not to do it.

Well, I can't quite agree that HD recommendations/guidelines are to be trusted. We know where they've dropped the ball on so many other things. That said, since doing this video, and reading all the comments, I am going to continue changing engine oil every 4k-5k miles, and will do the primary at the same time. But will probably do the transmission every other engine/primary change. Reason is that the trans comes out clean, and nothing on the magnet. The trans does not get the heat or contamination that the engine and primary does. Thank you for your comment. 👍😎👍

Great info 👍 . Thanks for letting us know. I use H-D 360 20W50 in the engine and Formula+ in the primary & transmission on my M8 Road King. I do a 3 hole oil change and replace the engine oil filter before l put it in storage for winter. This is roughly after about a 5000KM riding season . I have 12,000KM on the odometer. So far so good.

Thanks for the info and would love to hear if your particles appear to be less after a few changes. I was talking to someone that worked in the oil industry and asked for his honest opinion on longevity of different brands of oil. He told me the in all honesty, all oils will protect for approximately 20,000 miles. I ask why then the frequency of recommended changes. He told me the reason is in the money. The more oil you change, the more profit that is made. It sounds like what I was assuming. That being said, I still change every 3-5 thousand miles. Now I’ll be doing all 3 every time due to your video. I have to tell you though, I have a 2003 heritage with 69,000 on it and have never changed the transmission or primary and it runs like the day I purchased it from the dealer. Call me stupid or just lucky, but that’s the truth.

Thank you for your comment, and for sharing your experience. Interesting what your industry guy told you. Yes, there are less particulates in the oil when changing more often. Will have to dig thru some Blackstone reports to find how much. The landscape of oil efficacy is significantly changed over the last few decades with more and more semi and full synthetics, Even with the best fluids I can tell when the oil starts getting "tired" in the engine by top end noise, and in the primary by clutch engagement. I cannot tell any difference in the transmission. Again, thanks for the interesting info you've shared. KP

I just changed the oil and filter a couple days ago at 5k on my FXLRS. The little magnet was almost completely clean and the oil wasn’t too dirty looking either (HD synth 3) was going to change my transmission at the same time but it looked perfectly clear and clean. I’m waiting on an aftermarket chain tensioner before I do my primary because I’m swapping out the factory one while I’m in there. I’ll go ahead and change the transmission too and look at that magnet. I suspect it will be in good condition judging by the appearance of the oil. If so, I’ll probably stay with 10k on my Tran and primary. Great information though. We can always count on you guys for straight answers.👍

I do the same on my 2010 FLHTC using 20w50 Syntec. My reason is that oil is one of the main components of cooling along with lubrication. Plus I am keeping an eye on the engine internals. For those of you that ride an Electra Glide you know how hot these engines get. My EVO doesn't even come close to the heat coming from my FLHTC.

Transmission is BelRay, also every oil change. The magnets are clean except for the normal fuzz on the primary. 3 quarts in the engine, a little over a quart in the primary, less than a quart in the transmission. Not a huge environmental impact since I recycle my oils. Just how I do it, I’m old and old school. Your mileage may vary.

On 2013RK, engine = syn3 8000km (Europe), pri = formlua+ 10000k, trans = formula+ 12000 k, just for ease and less stress I am not doing 3 holes at the same time anymore, which I was doing with the Evo's (one time 11000 km on the 3 oils during a 4-5 week Scandinavian holiday in 2010, no problem with the oils on long distances in such a short time period ! ). On 2016UL, engine = syn3 8000k, pri = formlua+ 10000k, trans = gear oil 12000 k, this is the holiday machine now, if 8000 k is after holiday, I will do 9000 k, no fear, no problem, engine oil never becomes black (has no "tune"), no heavy consumption. On 2019UL CVO engine = syn3 8000k, pri = gear oil 12000k (starts smelling), trans = gear oil 16000 k, I think that's enough mileage, I won't go to 32000k / 20000 miles for the transmission, although that is the cleanest oil, with nothing on the magnetic plug. They will also extend the mileages for customer cost sake compared to the competition (at least for cars), after experience that the older shorter intervals showed no serious wear etc. , so were actually relatively too short. And, of course, synthetic oil is then prescribed as well.

Hey guys, we have all been told to change oil every so many miles and that was due to oil companies. Oil doesn't break down the two concerns are the pH and contaminants. We still have guys that change their oil every ten thousand miles in the trucking industry but I know guys that have almost a million on an oil change. I don't see the advantage of changing the oil every 5 thousand for your 20 thousand intervals. If the oil is bad at that point you have bigger issues that wasn't caused by oil change intervals.

@DKCustomProducts 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for your input. Low RPM, liquid cooled semi's are very different than air cooled, higher revving HD engines. On HD engines, the thing that breaks down first are the viscosity modifiers on the majority of bikes since they are running so hot that the modifiers loose their ability to curl up. That said, yes, depending on how ridden, temps, what oil used, one can probably go much longer than the manual intervals. Other side of the coin, most everyone can hear/feel the difference on a fresh 3 hole change...engine is smoother and quieter, clutch engagement is better, shifting is smoother.

I believe the biggest deception with Harley Davidson and there oils is a lack of R.D. If you are using a after market brand you will be better off. My top brands in my own R.D. for my 2019 Roadglide will go to Torco full synthetic motor oil and gear lube, Mobil 1 full synthetic motor oil , Motul full synthetic motor oil and semi blend primary. Harley oils performed the worst of those 3 I have tested (Syn 3 & Harley primary and gear oil ) in my 2019 bike, for my 89 Evo Sportster engine H.D. 360 , Motul primary semi-blend, The primary runs quieter now than it ever has, since I stopped using the Harley primary oil in that bike. HD transmissions are pretty stout...probably the most trouble free part of the drivetrain for decades. HOWEVER, they do fail. This last week I saw a 2014 Street Glide that had blown it's second transmission in the last 5 years, AND a 2021 Road Glide that had a couple of broken teeth in its' trans. I use Syn 3 in the engine and I use harley 80-140 heavy syn in the primary and trans, engine gets changes every 4 to 5 thousand miles and the primary and trans get it around 8 to 10 thousand so basicly the primary and trans get changed every second oil change and the oil gets changed every yr depending on mileage put on the bike as we have a fairly short riding season here in Canada. I only use Wix filters as well. Bike has 65 thousand on it and I run 2 up heavy, long haul touring and never had a problem at all, side note, the service tech at the dealership told me about the 80-140 weight as i was running syn 3 in the primary before and I was getting a lot of chain noise when hot from the primary and 5 gear howl because of the straight cut gears in the trans, the heavier oil makes it shift like butter and the 5 gear howl is gone.

I live in Arizona; yes, we ride in the Winter Months (40 to 60 Degrees), and a 5,000-mile oil change would make sense. BUT we ride in the summer months when it is 115+, SOOO it would make more sense to change your engine oil every 3,000 miles and a three-hole every other (6,000 miles). Yep, I'm a baby boomer. I turned a wrench for a living and have experience with motors in hot weather. Screw the ESG score (I’m a two Genders and EV suck kind of guy); I’m paying for my Bike and the upkeep of my bike. Maintaining CLEAN engine oil is critical, especially in a Warm or Hot environment.. PS: I also ride with the Patriot Gard, and our group participates in Parades (Slow speed with no Air Flow). We all know that heat can break down older oil. Poor oil conditions can do a poor job of lubricating the engine. Poor Oil leaves deposits (Varnishing) on internal engine components, plus clog passages with sludge, breaking down the Lubricating properties! Poor engine oil condition can reduce the lifespan of your motor and in the long run, can lead to more downtime and will be more expensive to operate your Bike. If you're not changing your oil regularly, I believe you are a Fool!

I’ve always changed all 3 and use synthetic in the motor and transmission but awhile back found that Lucas actually makes. Primary oil that isn’t synthetic. I switched from using Harley lubricants years ago. Not because I never liked the Harley products though. The main reason was because the closest dealership was 1.5 hrs away from where I lived at the time. It was a hassle to go there to pick it up. I’ve always used Lucas products around the farm on everything tractors trucks lawn mowers even my wife Mercedes suv. Right down to even my firearms. And never once have Ive never found a Lucas product that doesn’t do exactly as it’s advertised to do. Lucas products has never let me down. I’d make a good advertising agent for Lucas . I’ve even tried Amsoil products. We ran Amsoil in my sons dirt bikes and atv’s with great results. Very fine products just not a lot of dealers in our area. I’ve got a 2013 Ultra Limited. I really never liked the whining noise the primary’s make on them bikes. I guess it’s mainly because of the self adjusting tensioners they’ve got. I never felt that the transmission shifted as smooth as it should of. Hitting neutral when coming up to a red light was damn near impossible. And knowing my problem was in the primary and not the transmission after many years of owning these bikes When I switched the primary over to Lucas Primary lubricant I must admit I wasn’t impressed at all. In fact I was down right disappointed. The more I rode the bike though the less noise I was hearing. But still I wasn’t satisfied with the shifting. I had plans on giving the Amsoil another try but the only problem was the parts store never really carried the Lucas primary oil when I first purchased it . I agreed to take a whole case if the store manager ordered it for me. What can I do with about a whole case of that type oil. So when the bike came up for service again i decided to give the Lucas primary oil one more service period . When I pulled the plug on the primary I noticed 2 things 1 the oil wasn’t as dark as the other oils I had been running. But the other 2 oils was brown when I put th in new. And the Lucas is clear when it’s new. But the Lucas wasn’t even really dark at all the way clutch residue makes oil. And 2 there was hardly anything on the magnet. We’ll I’m coming up on the 5th oil change since switching to the Lucas and I can’t ask for better results . The whining noise is all but gone and I’ve got 0 problems with the way it shifts and my ability to hit neutral. I’m considering on only changing my primary oil every 6000 miles. I have no plans on doing the motor oil and transmission anything other than every 3000 mile though. I really see no sense in changing the primary oil every 3000 miles. As long as the oil continues to stays as clear as it has and I don’t begin to find metal shavings on the magnet. Sorry for such a long post . I do hope that it helps others. A lot of other guys in my area has switched over to using primary pacific products. As of now I’ve not heard any complaints about excessive clutch wear or anything else. Good Day to all

Spectro HD 20W50 every 5K for engine, SYN3 every 5K for primary, and Spectro 75W140 Platinum 6 Speed Transmission Oil every 10K for transmission. Since the trans doesn't get the contaminates like the engine and primary, it can go longer. Never see any metal on trans plug magnet (after the initial 1K change).

My thought is the primary and transmission oil doesn't see the temperatures and gas infusion that the engine oil does, so it should last longer. That being said, I just did my 5K service on a 2023 M8 and changed the primary too. I'll change the transmission at 10K.

Good points! The primary ends up with a lot of containments in it, from the primary chain and the clutch plates....and depending on how one rides, that can be quite a bit. Transmission hopefully does not have much in it...unless there is a lot of grinding of gears, and/or a lot o dumping the clutch at higher rpm's. Thank you for the comment.

I have a 2002 Heritage Classic. I never go over 5K on the engine or primary. Depending on how hard I ride the bike, I change the trans about every 8-10K. The trans is a closed system so it doesn't get near the contamination the engine does . The primary is a closed system also, however, the oil is contaminated by wear of the clutch pack. I know people that go 8-10K on their engine oil. I tell them if you're going to do that, I would change the oil filter at the halfway point. The best oil is useless once the filter stops filtering. There is a bypass valve in the oil filter. When the filter media gets plugged up, the bypass valve opens to allow oil to circulate through the engine. At that point you're bypassing the filter media and just pumping dirty oil through your engine. I use Amsoil 20-50 in the engine and primary. I use Amsoil 90-110 in the trans.

Amazing video... great information.... what about if you ride 5000 miles in year and a half ? Would you change it on the one year mark? Or when you get to 1.5 years, or one years and seven, eight months? Thanks

Kevin doesn't go over 5000 miles without changing his oil. It doesn't matter if it is 1 week or 1 year. Thanks for commenting! MB

Always go by the manufacturer's recommendation on oil change intervals.... Mileage or age, whichever comes first. Mileage would be the most important factor IMO, but you should look at your hand book and see what is suggested as far as time if you are riding many miles in a year. Thank you for commenting! MB

Now to me it's common sense. I do 3 hole change, syn oil every 5000, 2015 ultra limited 103 ci. I do this because, " what's it going to hurt"!!!! Screw 10000, 20000 etc. And you have good oil in primary, transmission at all times.
