Harsh Truths of studying an MBA in the US, especially as an international student. This is a video I wished someone made for me before I started my MBA so I would have been more well-informed and prepared coming in. MBA is not as glamorous as how outsiders may think and it's important to understand what you are getting yourself into.
Hi everyone, I'm Chen from Singapore. I am a Cornell Johnson MBA graduate currently working as a finance manager in Big Tech. I came to the US in 2019 to pursue my MBA at Cornell Johnson and after graduating from business school I started my post-MBA career in Tech in Seattle. In this channel I share my experiences in Tech, MBA, and as a foreigner in the US. If there are any topics you are interested in, please let me know in the comments.
I will be posting more life in the US videos so make sure to like, comment, and subscribe!

By no means I’m trying to discourage anyone from pursuing an MBA. Purpose of this video is to share both sides of the coin so that people are aware of the challenges you going into and make a well-informed decision 🙂

Totally agree. Especially coming from an undergraduate background in business administration, I'd say 80% of the MBA classes contained the same material that I had learned in undergrad lol

So true, it's similar content but more case-study based

hey chen! thank you for the videos, singaporean also. been watching your videos before i decided to also apply for grad school in the US! i kinda had an expectation that hiring is going to be super hard esp for international students, and even x1000 in this economy. would love to hear more about how you navigated that personally during your MBA.

@AhBoy: Thanks for doing this video, really insightful! Could you maybe comment on or make a video about how visas affect the experience of international MBA students?

Thank you! will certainly consider making a video on visas. In general being on F1 there’s a lot of limitations such as can’t work off campus, duration requirements in the US etc. Same goes for OPT/H1B

I am an international student, and I aspire to pursue an MBA in the US with the goal of establishing my own startups in the country. Do you think pursuing an MBA would be worth it, or do you have any better alternatives in mind?

this is a complex question I recommend u seek more opinions, here’s my 2 cents: Pros// 1. MBA gets u into the door and legally enter US for extended period of time 2. Top MBAs (think M7 schools) provide network necessary for start-up, especially schools like HBS that has startup specific curriculums Cons// 1. MBA is expensive and start-up typically does not allow you to pay off student loans in the first couple of years. Alternative is work in big companies for 2-3 years post MBA den transit to startup 2. there might be cheaper alternative than MBA, I don’t know which though, maybe other masters program or internal transfer from your company

if you could choose again, will you still choose mba or go for cheaper masters? and why?

I would choose mba again since it aligns with my long-term goals (general management roles), it’s more expensive but ROI makes sense. will definitely prepare myself better if do over again though

@@AhBoyInUSAhow would you prepare differently? Thank you

@@xoangelI’m not sure if I would prepare differently but given what I know now I would spend my recruiting efforts more efficiently on companies and roles I actually legitimate chances in, and play to my strengths
