Here are 7 Lessons I learned as a Finance Manager at Amazon. I have been working as a finance manager at Amazon for the past 2 years and today I will share with you 7 lessons that really helped me to become an effective finance contributor and perform my job at a high level.

I came to the US in 2019 to pursue my MBA at Cornell Johnson and after graduating from business school I started my post-MBA career in Tech in Seattle. I resonate with prioritizing and ownership the most. I’ve never had to review prioritizations on a daily or sometimes hourly basis before, and I’ve never experienced such a blurred boundary of what I own vs I do not own. There are times when I point out a problem identified in output metrics and the likely business causes, but was asked for business actions needed and feel that’s beyond what I can advise on. I’ve also been in meetings/initiatives/projects where there is not a clear owner and it was chaos. One thing I don’t agree with is SQL skills, I do noticed that at least in some orgs, Finance has very basic SQL skills except for the one or two people. Every week someone would ask in the group chat “I need to extract this data but not sure how, does anyone have a query I can use”.

Thanks for your feedback! Glad to hear you resonate with some of the takeaways, prioritizing is always challenging due to the ambiguity of our roles where we need to 'figure out' which initiatives are worth owning. Good point on SQL, having solid SQL skills definitely gives you an advantage. I guess I'm referring to as one moves up in seniority, often times tactical work like building queries are tasked to junior analysts who can learn data structures faster than us. 😀

Thanks for the very helpful videos. I’m just curious about that you have mba degree from cornell so you can quite easily get into investment banking. Why did you prefer working as a financial analyst at FAANG instead ib. Can you make a comparative video on these two different industry ? ( pros/cons, work life balance, salary from entry level to senior level etc. )

Thank you! will consider doing such a video. I was quite set on Tech from the beginning due to the culture, work-life balance, and tech in itself just feels more fun. But there are definitely other nuances between the two.
