Hills has a sensitive stomach and skin formula with Alaska Pollock and Insect protein fir Adult dogs. My vets office has it as a novel diet.

Nice. I used to have a discoid roach bin. Thetre easy to acquire from universities but you weren't allowed to sell them to non-university members until a few years ago. Mad Aqaurist Chris Biggs has a video about legal Canadian roach colonies

Black soldier fliy larvaes are also known as phoenix worms in the reptile and fish-keeping hobbies

I know this is off topic. Someone has a cat in the early stages of kidney disease and is allergic to all fowl. The cat has gotten very picky about food. Her vet told her to feed whatever she can get the cat to eat. Any suggestions? Other than bugs? LOL Thank you so much.

I try on these appetite stimulants, medications for nausea, make sure the phosphorus is in range. Most cats renal disease are “picky” from nausea so that needs to be managed in a multifocal approach. There is a lot that goes into it obviously and because I am not familiar with the case I can only make broad generalizations. purina hydrocare on top of food can be a good way to prime the pump, but not only has like 14 Cals as it is a palate enhancer, not a meal replacement

@AnimalDocRea do you know what the ideal climate is for the Black Soldier Fly bins as far as temperatures? I'm in a cool coastal area where temps in the 70's are as about as warm as it ever gets, would this be a limiting factor?

I think it would be worth a try, I don’t know the exact temperature but they do go away in the winter and then We restart them in spring. Probably can do a quick google search for that though, that’s how we learned how to do it.

Well I try to stay in my lane so I have limited knowledge about exotics and farm animals so I often defer to my colleagues on anything more serious than the basics

Locally there’s a brand called Kahoots dog food it’s ALS. I reached out to them and they said this what do you think? I have the %s would be nice if you can review them out “The ALS formulas meet the strictest nutrient standards. If we were to put Adult or Puppy on our label it would only be a marketing ploy to make the consumer feel more comfortable. it’s entirely unnecessary due to the standard we meet Our food is equal to or better than Farmina, Solid Gold and Essence. We have a significantly higher amount of supplementation compared to Essence. Personally i would not feed my animals Hills or Purina. Our foods do not contain By-products, Chinese ingredients, plant protein isolates, corn, wheat, soy or other high sugar additives like flour or any ingredient other than grade 1 quality. We are not manufactured by Diamond. Most of our foods are my by a small family owned manufacturer in Los Angeles. “

I’d have to see the numbers but that response seems very unprofessional to me and I don’t see how telling a consumer what nutrient profile their food is meant to feed is a marketing ploy. This response sends up lots of red flags for me.

@Daygomadebrian all life stages is a big no, it means it’s a puppy food. The fat calcium and phosphorus are way out of range for an adult

Not sure why it’s wrong, but certainly not a requirement. If your dog needed a novel protein diet to treat a disease however, you may think differently. It’s about what’s best for your pet after all
