Gary's last statement on how he was glad that he stuck around really, really, really hit me. I feel that every time something wonderful happens to me. However rare that may be. I'm glad I stuck around to hear that comment from him, and I hope he and I stay around.

@@kushmaster5000 Yeah he's been a huge help for me over the last year plus and the special was something else, one of my favorite stand up specials of all time. I won't spoil it but he elaborates on that thought as part of the special's closing and like I said, I lost it

When it got to the end, I had been going along with everyone saying “Oh yeah I do that too,” knowing I have struggled with depression. But hearing Gary say “I was googling ‘painless suicide,’” that was the one that hit the hardest. There is never a darker moment in your mind than “I hope I don’t wake up tomorrow, but I also hope it doesn’t hurt.” The only reason you’re saying that is because you can’t even think about seeing the next day, but you can comprehend pain now, and your body rejects it. At one point in my life, I thought I was too weak because I couldn’t hurt myself even though I wanted to die. Just like Gary, though, I’m glad I’m still here.

Humor used to be my primary crutch in connecting with people. It's a start, but it's rather shallow. Deeper connections are through shared vulnerability and support. Gary's State Abbreviations bit is classic, but his sharing of his struggles is why I'll always love him. As a person and not a means to a chuckle. Life is hard; kindness matters, connection matters. Thank you, Gary.

I was 14 when I had my first suicidal thoughts. I was bullied, a lot, for long time. I blamed myself for being a target of irrational bullying. And over the years, I struggled on and off about not being able to be a normal person. I am 41 now. I still remember so clearly the moments of self hate. I wish I knew it was ok to feel like that. Self hate and sense of worthlessness after relentless bullying. I wished I was a normal human being. That was my thought everyday. Worthy of not being bullied. I didn't deserve that, to spend so much time ending it all. I lived good portion thinking I was not worthy of happiness. I lived my life thinking I am miserable because I deserved it. Being 41 now, with a new born baby , I think about that a lot. I want him to not be me... It's ok to be happy

Wow, didn't expect to learn something new about depression other than their experiences... But what Patton said about _too much empathy for everyone_ and not having a healthy level of concern for yourself, that hit me, and how it strips/decays your own feeling of identity and emotions..like you feel depressed or angry or anxious or paranoid but then tell yourself 'you don't really deserve to feel angry/depressed'.

Keep kicking at the balls of it boys. Keep kicking at depression like it's a dog trying to bite because it is. Winston Churchill called it his 'black dog' and it came around regularly to spoil life and the good times. (he never quit drinking liquor so,,,maybe not a great example) I've had that monster and the more I (we) make fun of it, drag it into the light and expose the very tentacles of it, the less it hurts.
