HBX 901A 5900Kv Surpass Hobby Brushless Motor Swap. Will It Perform With Stock ESC?

Today we are looking at swapping out the motor in our HBX 901A for the highest KV Surpass Hobby one i could get my hands on. Just to see what would happen if we used a high Kv motor in conjunction with the stock electronics? Will it be quicker? Will we get horrendous cogging? We shall see!

Really interresting. The stock motor comes with a motor mount that supports a 14T pinion so thats worth trying for people, interested in a smaller speed bump. I couldnt get the stock pinion off for exactly the reasons you identified but I`ll order one of those pinion pullers and try again. Your top speed with the bigger motor roughly matches what I get with the stock motor and pinion on 3S but the lightweight nature of the truck means its pretty hard to control at that speed and flip overs are common. Im not sure I`ll run it on 3S very often. Initially I had exactly the same problem as you, getting the heatsink off the motor but a mole wrench sorted it out in the end.

How's the cogging? Would have been nice to see that as an additional test. Maybe in another vid? FYI you can also swap the pinion to a 14T on the stock motor.

Hello Brad! As i mention at the end of the video, it's non existent. Same or smoother than the original motor! And yes a 14t gear is on the cards at some point. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. 👍👍

I got the same motor coming in today, gonna throw it in an UD1602 (Breaker). Was wondering if it could work. Excellent video, cheers!!

Are you sure it's the same motor? Seems awfully big to go in one of those little drift cars!! It will be an absolute monster!!!!! 😨👍

@@theminiatureconstructionco4556 I probably got the models wrong. Mine came with a 2435 brushless 2.3mm shaft. I’m getting a 2440 from Surpass. Mine has 3600kv (could be off) and the other will be 4600kv. Not a huge jump but, hopefully does something lol..I’m just getting back into RC’s. Last one I had at 10 was a Grasshopper in 1993 lol…So my specs and models might be off lol

@@patrickjames661 that sounds more like it. It will still shift though!!! The one in the 901A is 28mm dia. Mind you the brushed version comes with a 380/90 motor I think. Which is larger than the brushless. So perhaps you can? 👍

Great job on this upload! The Heat is from the low amperage esc. Lots of resistance there with those smaller gauge wires and circuits on the board. A larger mah esc would dissipate the heat better. This still was an impressive experiment. How many runs did you get before the thermal cut off took place?

It was literally toward the end of the battery's. I don't think It was the low voltage cut off because there seemed to be to much go when it resumed. It only did it a couple of times. 👍

I let it cool a little then just messed about until the batteries completely died. 👍

To run this on a 3s lipo would I need to upgrade the esc? I'm a complete knoob, love this little truck it's great

Sorry my friend for the delay in replying. I don't always get all the message notifications. I personally would upgrade the electronics if you thinking about running 3S all the time. The standard esc will melt for sure. Or you have the usual HBX thermal cut out issues. This this rips on 2s now we have a 60A esc in there. No need for three!!!!

You are going to burn up your ESC after the motor explodes to heat. Check the max amps on that high kv motor. Higher the kv higher the amps. Best of luck...

Do you think adding the heat sink back might help keeping the esc from cutting out if it keeps the motor cool enough?

Got to be worth a try. Even though it's a pain to get it in and out of the holder with it on. Hopefully it will just slide or clip on. 👍👍

I don't think you will go far wrong with 60 to be honest.

I have HBX 901 almost brand new, suddenly stopped working at all, the battery is okay, the only thing work is the led light but nothing else, i need your help please

Sometimes if they get hot they will cut out. Normally though after a short period they will turn back on. 👍

@@theminiatureconstructionco4556 was going to order this hbx but went for the a lot cheaper flyhal fc610. Basically a hbx 903 with a 550 motor and a lot of potencial for a brushless setup even though 30kmh is enough for my bashing style lol.

@@theminiatureconstructionco4556 it looks like it would be awkward and cumbersome on a little pinion set screw. Just had to drill out one myself, glued from factory I guess. 5 minutes with a cobalt bit.

@@stickem1974 well it does come with a load of different sized pins for different sizes of motor shaft. I've just it twice now and it's been a godsend. It did fail once but only when I was unable to get the plate underneath the pinion. 👍👍

That's a good question. Obviously anytime you make something faster, the energy to do this has to come from somewhere. It was one thing at the time I wasn't really concerned with. 👍

@@theminiatureconstructionco4556 do you think it took away 10 minutes of runtime. Im trying to decide if i wanna do 3s battery with my 2840 3900kv or do a higher kv motor with 2s battery. I just want to achieve 35mph with consistent runs.

@@RayRiv73 I double up with the batteries (piggy back). So it's difficult to tell. Also if you have a look at the later video. I knackered the standard electronics running 3s. I've had a couple of comments off people saying you shouldn't do it because the ESC overheats constantly. Which to be fair it did a couple of times.

Yes it was on just 2s. I've heard that the stock ESC will handle 3s? 😨

The mid motor chassis design puts too much force on the direct drive main gear . Destroyed the rear diff pinion and ring gear several times truck can't handle this high kv motor. Those receivers and ESC in one are junk as well.

Interesting. The video was just a proof of concept really, a what would happen if you like. I'm going to try it on 3S as well at some point see what comes unstuck. 👍
