How to check the wear on your Harley V-twin Cam Chain Tensioner Shoes. Very important as they can potentially start failing and cause major engine damage on some earlier bikes! Research yours to see if it might have this problem.

I have owned Harley Davidson's twin cam 88 for a number of years. Checking the tensioner on a regular basis is a good thing. Some of these motors will stay together longer than others, just a role of the dice. Bad design. HARLEY DAVIDSON COULD OF DID BETTER. Now the owner's of these motorcycle are on their own. Thanks Harley Davidson.

I’ve converted my 2000 Heritage Springer into gear drive cams to eliminate those shoes. I’ve put over 40 thousand miles on this setup with no problems at all. I converted my 2004 Electra Glide over to a Screaming Eagle hydraulic tensioner system and have about 10 thousand miles on this with no problem with this conversion. The Screaming Eagle kit has a real good oil pump that is part of conversion. I wish I had used an oil pump like this on my Springer but it’s been fine with the stock one and stock cam plate. Roll Tide!! 😉👍

Hey nine point five. Your 2006 twin cam 88 has those issues with the tensioner cuz it still has the spring tensioner setup on it. You need to upgrade to the hydraulic tensioners like they used in the 2006 dyna models an all models 2007 to present models. That will take care of the chewing the shoes up. They do that cuz they have constant super tight pressure on the tensioner an the hydraulic ones let tension up on them at certain points in the rpms like when decelerating an such. My 2006 wide glide is going strong at 26k miles. Best to do ya research the 88s were good motors especially the last yr they made em

Funny my 2006 i checked at 65,000 and they were worn so i did them. I serviced this bike from day one it never went to a dealer. Previous owner let me do all service. But i have seen 24k bikes worn pretty good. Its a pretty easy job with a couple hand made tools. Oil changes do make a difference. Gear drive cams are junk…. Done them for customers.. but most wont do it again. Worry about cam bearings on these newer twinks.

HD replaced my 2003 at 50K and I replaced them around 92K, those were HD tensioners and still had plenty of life in them. I believe most fail because of 'bugs' burrs'knicks' on the chains and the longer the chains are in use the more they polish themselves.

Those spring tensioners can be removed and these twin cams run fine for 100 K miles without them. They were originally put there to get rid of the sonic hum. I have several videos on my channel explaining how you dont need them. I have ran my 2002 softail custom twin cam 1450 for 38 thousand miles without them and its fine. My sons 2000 TC dyna has now run 72 K miles without them. They were placed there for sonic deadener purposes only by marketers to compete with silent engine sounds to compare with Japanese motorcycles. Seems to me ignorant people would have figured this out by now after all these years

On some engines those harmonic sounds can travel through the valve train and cause damage after a while . If you look at a lot of the drag racers that run those belt driven cam gears for the cam and crank shaft the reason why they are doing this is because of the harmonic that can happen when using gear drive sets on car engines and often times with poorly designed gear drive units they create a lot of valve train harmonics that can cause lifter and cam shaft failure because of the shock and harmonics . The kevlar belt system used on these engines like the SBC BBC and Chrysler big blocks all are designed to keep the engine oil off the belt so they run dry and need no lubrication by using a special made cam cover that separates them from the oil and they have a separate cover that can unbolt to make cam timing changes by changing the different degreed keyways that come in the kits . My buddy has a twin cam and we upgraded his oil pump and cam plate and did the upgraded hydraulic tensioners and shoes because his bike started loosing oil pressure because of the shoes failing and started to clog the original oil pump up . We also upgraded to the improved breathers in the heads and changed cams for more power and used the S&S quickee push rods to get rid of the non adjustable stock pushrods to make it easier and faster to go in and work on the cam chest . Went from a 88 to 97 cubes and this winter it's going out to 117 cubes then off to the Dyno for a good Dyno tune for big power .

Hi Dave, Sorry for the late reply, but I just saw you your question. Yes, I did change them myself. There are a few different ways of doing it. And the Harley did not cover that on warranty? Seems like a defect similar to the mysterious doohickey on KLR Enduro. The manufacturer is certainly aware but do they fix it for you? no... 60 years ago I had my first ride on a flaming backfiring oil dripping Harley. One of the most exciting days in my life at age four, then everything was motorcycle, I was in love.. however I've never owned a Harley and always looked at them like the Primitive when I rode on. I looked at buying one one time about 30 years ago, test ride and the throttle stuck wide open was exciting for about one second until I found the kill switch and the performance was not that impressive half hour later I was buying a Yamaha 1100 that had everything that the Harley was lacking besides a little more Chrome and name. Currently riding BMW boxer twins have two of them, and I would guess used I could buy even three of them for the price of a similarly used Harley. I don't know or care the original retail price but I'm guessing nearly the same brand new. Then if you're spending real money like 25k just get a Triumph Rocket 3 biggest redesigned much lighter and the kind of torque Harley only dreams of. To each his own.
