Native Americans and other vulnerable people battling addiction continue to be recruited and brought to Arizona, and the case of 32-year-old Fernando Largo is a sad one.
Why was he, a New Mexico man, found dead in Mesa when he was supposed to be getting treatment?
He wanted to get sober and turn his life around. Instead, he died of an overdose and due to the circumstances around his death, his family wants someone held accountable.
Meskee Tsotaddle-Yatsayte has been a longtime advocate for missing members of the Navajo community.
This past year, families have been searching for Native Americans in Arizona where authorities say indigenous people from New Mexico, Montana, the Dakotas and Alaska are recruited to get so-called treatment for addiction.
The alleged scheme involves signing up individuals for Medicaid benefits as organizers have defrauded the state for nearly a billion dollars, charging Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), Arizona’s Medicaid agency for therapy services that are rarely provided.
In many cases, victims are enticed with alcohol or drugs, and are kept in shady sober living homes, according to the FBI.
Now, the state is cracking down with suspensions of payments to more than 200 providers believed to be involved in Medicaid fraud.

This isnt just a native american issue. And at the very least, the people running these "facilities" are under qualified. My son was given plane tickets to fly 4 states away for rehab. Then when they couldnt handle him going through withdrawal, they dumped him at a hospital without even going in to help him check in. If he hadnt had my phone number memorized so we could get him a cab, a grey hound, a plane ticket, he would now be counted as one of the homeless or missing addicts on the southern California streets. He is clean now and working/ renting a house and has a future. These places give the credible rehabs a bad name and appear to be sucking money out of the state, while adding to the displaced homeless population. Keep your kids close to you, even when they seem impossible to deal with. No one cares about them as much as you do. Warn them of the daily scams they encounter and pray pray pray.

Some Sober living ends up being a drug house. My cousin left the one he was in due to the bunk mate using and he was trying to fight his addiction. It’s not uncommon for addicts to relapse and these days it’s deadly😢🙏🙏🙏

Since laws vary by state, it would be interesting to know if the facility is only licensed to provide outpatient care, if them renting the room would be a violation.

Very good point because as a person in recovery outpatient programs don't provide housing accomodations EVER as far as I am aware of ... that's something you would be responsible for yourself. Only inpatient since they have the facilities to house you and it's part of the program.

Unfortunately not everyone at sober living wants to get sober. I found out the hard way when they let a girl who I found out later had already been kicked out of the house and all others around for using. She pulled up my mattress and found her old stash of syringes she left from the last stay..

Sacramento, Ca has a excellent program @Capital STAR The STAY residential. This center is for youth ages 18-29 with mental health issues, not addicts. After rehab/recovery this would be good for a young adult to get counseling, crisis stabilization, mental health treatment. Services support their transition to housing, employment, education, life skills with ongoing treatment/counseling. Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Trauma. A family member aged 19 was using meth heavily and went into a drug psychosis. After her rehab/recovery she was sent to STAR and just completed 30 days. Its critical for recovering addicts especially youth to have this after care. Most never experienced independent living, jobs, or completed their education (dropped out of high school). I mention this facility because it is one that can be trusted and honestly is there to help and care for a family member/friend. Never give up hope. It took almost a year to find her and get her help. They do accept Medi-Cal

I really wish people would focus more on our native cultures, what’s happening is not being told. My grandmother was native American as a mixed race African-American they have divided us that way we can’t each other. we only fight each other and I’m praying for all of us. I am Native American and I feel truly sorry for the families that are losing their loved ones to this but I think the reason that it's becoming such a big issue in the news now is because the states and the government are losing money to these scam facilities. It's a clear case of negligence. He should have never been placed in a hotel. These facilities are given Federal money to take care of Native American citizens seeking treatment. They basically took the money and gave him very minimal care. I understand that he made the choice but he also did seek help from a treatment center. I don't know if you've ever been to one of these centers so I'm assuming that you're ill-informed. I work in one that's state run. When people voluntarily check themselves in there are certain limitations. We are supposed to monitor the individuals in our care. We are liable until their treatment is completed or until they voluntarily check themselves out. In this particular case it seems like they just took the money and did less than the bare minimum. Either way I think the issue that this news segment is trying to bring to light has nothing to do with addiction at all. I think they're trying to bring awareness to the fact that these facilities are scams and are taking state and federal money without providing the care that they are promising and simply pocketing the money.

I was in rehab in California. Drugs all around everyday. They rebook the ones that fail drug test. And they put them right back in treatment. Its all about money. Sad thing is i was pregnant in treatment and therw were more drugs in treatment than on the streets. But, i overcame the temptation there bc i wanted to get clean. But others might not be ready and see what happends....

Yeah, this is a mess and needs to be straightened out. That being said, blaming anyone and everyone except the addict for their problems and overdoses IS a major part of the problem. Don't get on drugs and this will NOT happen to you. Get on drugs and there is a thousand things that can happen to you. So don't compromise yourself to begin with.

I'm native as well. A lot of people are focusing on the fact that he overdosed and saying that he did it to himself. They are forgetting that he reached out for help and these facilities receive state and government money to treat the indigenous people in their care. Not all but many of these facilities target indigenous groups because they're guaranteed those funds. After receiving them they do the bare minimum. Sadly I think the government is only making this an issue because people are dying and they're receiving backlash and losing money that they may have to replace.

There seems to be nothing that can be done. I just found out one of our village members also died yesterday, someone ran over him. Not really sure what happened but he was kown to have been in a rehab program too. I believe these people are opening up other places outside of the city into different towns in Arizona. They won't stop they're all African people who run these places. Not good.

Sounds like an issue to do with the Maricopa Department of Health. They approve and fund these centers, correct? Incompetence is their standard operating mode.
