It’s funny how when we actually experience and confront the thing and accept the thing that was happening that’s the only way we work through it and it diminishes and becomes manageable. It’s not that you’re eliminating these things from yourself but you’re attenuating them and tuning your system so they work for you rather than you working for them

I tell both my 8 and 3 year old daughters that being angry is ok and it’s healthy to feel, but it’s important to learn to navigate it in a constructive way like not screaming at others, not hating yourself, not hiring yourself or others, not name calling, or immediately giving up on things. I’m trying to foster not only a safe environment for them, but also model correct (what I hope is at least, I bounce ideas off my therapist often)/ appropriate behavior around them. I’m not perfect nor am I always right, but I apologize face to face when it’s warranted, I admit when I’m wrong, and give them room to speak or room to have space. I’m attempting to break the cycle from my own childhood.

Starwars is also very right. Anger is often rooted in fear. So if you're angry try finding ways to feel safer. 1. Find a place to vent. Feeling supported helps. 2. Practice healthier boundaries. If you can't trust others to behave safely, but you don't feel allowed to have boundaries, you will be very angry. 3. Redirect your energy into building up the thing you're afraid of losing. Instead of yelling at the internet, go find the people you want to build up. Sometimes it's ok to let the anger out too. Because it is useful for setting emergency boundaries, and defending yourself in urgent situations.

@@quinndtxd venting is easy enough, the internet is pretty good for that. The third one isn't terribly difficult. It can be as easy as finding a non profit or online community already doing some of the work. Even if they're not doing it exactly how you envision, it's a good starting point. Boundaries are really really hard though, especially if you're building them for the first time and against toxic people. Support groups like this, here and on reddit can help but it's still a ton of work. But there's tons of other communities and therapy that can help.

@@steggopotamus start by recognizing when a boundary might be being violated, proceed from there. It's okay if you get angry, the key point is how you express that anger. Something that tends to happen to me when my boundaries are being violated online is that I have a hard time looking at the message that I find problematic, and an even harder time answering to it. That's when I can say "whoa dude, back off, this is not a topic I want to touch on anymore", and if my wish is disrespected then I get very angry, but it's a cold anger, less lashing out and more guarding myself up. I've understood anger and fear as 2 sides of the same coin, both are reactions to what we don't understand in regards to our own survival (physical survival, social survival, etc). Typical fear as we know it is when we have no method to deal with the unknown, so we tremble, some cry, get anxious etc. Anger is a proactive form of fear to fool ourselves into thinking we have the solution regardless if that's true or not. This is why I understand anger as an evolutionary tool to help galvanize the person into action, and something to be preserved rather than suppressed.

Sometimes I imagine myself as a vigilante, going after criminals, rapists, tyrants, and other evil people -- destroying them all. I have an extreme hatred towards injustice, but I am no hero. Something that I learned a while ago is that anger appears when your expectations are betrayed. In your mind, everything is going to go smoothly, until it isn't anymore and then you get pissed off that "this isn't how it is supposed to be". If you can practice accepting your friends' mistakes you can be able to manage your anger in a more positive way, for sure you can still be annoyed, but not negative or passive aggressive or whatnot.

People at work and in family always tell me they never see my emotions come out, they dont see anger or excitement or this or that. Its not that i dont feel anger, but when i do, it feels like an analytical moment. its a moment when i say ah, step back, see the situation and contemplate what kind of results reacting this way or that way would achieve.

In the past I used to shrug off disrespect at work but unknowingly built up resentment until I saw no choice but to quit. This ended two consecutive jobs. At my current job I was able to use communication skills I learned from Dr. K (as well as legal understanding from Attorney Ryan) to email an upper manager that they had said something demeaning to me even if they hadn’t meant to, and they gave written assurance that it would not happen again. Recognizing my anger, listening to it without acting impulsively, and using that opportunity to enforce boundaries early has given me a confidence in this workplace that I’ve never had before.

Oh shit wow I wasn't expecting to get a lightbulb moment watching this but I guess I did. Perhaps my relationship with anger and understanding of anger has been misplaced. I always saw it as something I had to control/restrain in order to become a better person. All the role models I have are calm and collected people who rarely get angry. But it happens for a reason and I should listen to why. The times I get most angry is either at myself or others at not performing within expectation I find. So usually when I or others run it down lol. "Emotions are information". Wow that was a great lightbulb. It breaks it down to its core. With this I'm starting to see a pattern with all my recent troubles. That of which all being connected to my line of expectations. I expect my friends to care about my interests as much as I care about theirs or my own. I expect people to have common sense and not be assholes. I expect my teammates on online games to be competent. I expect myself to do well in life or in games despite not having learned the necessary skills to do well. Etc. Really, by understanding what the reason for anger was I was able to pinpoint the cause, that being my entitled expectations or at the very least ego. Thanks again for the shorts, Dr. K!

The amount of times I wanted to cuss and beat the shit out of my older brother for disrespecting me when I'm telling him personal information is alot, I never do it of course because the way to solve it isn't to throw punches, but to communicate and resolve it, non violently and if he doesn't change then his a piece of shit and I don't want to have anything to do with him. But that's me I have alot of anger in my heart that's why I did boxing for three years religiously and it passified me so I don't turn into the Hulk.

Anger can also come from not resolved conflicts. If you're still angry at people for the things they've done to you etc. If they didn't apologized and did something horrible that you just can't forgive. Often it helps to try to see a different perspective, so that you can let go or forgive them for their disrespectful behavior. Maybe just thinking that they're human too and make mistakes or don't really think about their actions, then it's sometimes easier to let go. But first you have to find out because of which situation you're still angry at.

This being human is a guest house every morning a new arrival-a joy, a depression, a meanness-some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all even if they are a crowd of sorrows who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture still treat each guest honorably he might be clearing you out for some new delight the dark though the shame the malice meet them at the door laughing and let them in be grateful for whoever comes because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

Disrespect is subjective though. I think we need to get clear on what exactly is disrespectful.

People can't forget themselves for being angry? Okay, whatever. I just feel burnt-out and depressed like shit after I've expressed my anger. At least, when it's directed at specific females.
