The Little Mermaid Movie Description:
The Little Mermaid is an upcoming American musical fantasy film directed by Rob Marshall from a screenplay written by David Magee from a story by Magee, Marshall and John DeLuca. It is a production of Walt Disney Pictures and is a live-action adaptation of the 1989 animated film of the same name, which itself is loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale of the same name. It is produced by Rob Marshall, John DeLuca, Marc Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the latter whom co-wrote new songs for the remake as the lyricist, Alan Menken is set to return as the composer for both the score and the songs. The film will star Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Art Malik, Noma Dumezweni, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy, with Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay, and Awkwafina in voice roles.
The Little Mermaid is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 26, 2023.

I haven't been too thrilled with the live action remakes only because the originals are magical in their own right. But Disney has the money and it's an easy money maker for them. I look forward to seeing this, should be a fun adaptation, which is how we should look at these, just adaptations, like going to see a different version of Shakespeare play at the theater. I honestly do think her being white is integral to the story. The story of the Little Mermaid is based in Greek mythology with her father King Triton representing Poseidon. As a black individual I don't appreciate them race swapping established characters to make me feel "represented". Make new characters and if they fail do better. There are black Mermaid stories out there that they could tell written by African Americans, but they choose to blackify white people instead of uplifting us. Be careful what you defend.

she has a great voice, they should have given her an original movie rather than the race swapping. personally it does bother me, mostly because it's like saying we're only worth sloppy seconds, and it keeps being done to the red heads in particular for some reason... rip to all the red-headed girls, disney doesn't want you to have any representation lmao. but honestly, i find it kind of hypocritical to think race swapping is wrong if it's changing a poc to a white person, but allow race swapping if it's a white person being turned into a poc. making allowances for it in the rare occasions it benefits us rather than shaming it across the board because it's a disgusting practice, is only going to make problems in the future. anyway, from what i've seen of the trailers, imo she doesn't fit this role, and i won't be supporting, but i do hope to see her in other stuff someday, especially a musical.

Some very good insight into race in film. I agree if it's not essential to a character it can be changed. That said, my issue is that Disney did make an effort to accurately cast Aladdin and Lion King for their respective 'homes'. So casting a black girl as the lead of a Danish fairy tale seems hypocritical, even if she is playing a mythical creature (i.e. a mermaid). I do hope this girl can nail the character (she can certainly sing) but I think she's been put into a difficult position by Disney.

Its still a mermaid, a fish... Some say they have scale over their whole body. Its a diffrent between a fantasy creature from under the sea, and for example a human from a historical era. It's just a double standard. It's ok to race swap and say race isn't integral to that character and its true. Ariel doesn't have to be a white girl, but why on earth can't they just create new stories with racially diverse characters instead of throwing the "classics" under the bus? Like u said, it just reeks of hypocrisy and if u dare say anything ur labeled a racist or some shit. Just annoying how nobody can take criticism anymore.

@@sandrahawke3783 the Beast seems pretty made up to me. And if you put historical context in here: a mermaid is still European folklore. It is as if you made Anansi, a made up West-African spider god - complete fiction - and made him Asian. Fantasy can have historical context too. And even if you only look at the made up stuff, it remains a double standard by Disney. Halle Bailey does not deserve the hate that Disney is going to put her through in these very polarising times.

The only live action remakes I've seen are Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, and part of Aladdin. Also, I saw them on Disney+ not in the theaters. They were much worse than their original IMO. The original 2D movies were pretty awesome. The live action versions change too much unnecessary stuff, and in Mulan nearly everything detail was changed and nearly all for the worse. Beauty and the Beast wasn't quite as bad of an adaptation but I still like the original better. The rest I haven't watched because my sister watched them and said they all suck. At the end of the day all entertainment is subjective, but from a story and creative perspective I think the remakes are seriously lacking. It feels like Disney is just pumping out movies for nostalgia and the writers and art teams are either bad or not given enough time to make a well made adaptation.

As a Mexican woman it's a cheap and lazy excuse to give to woke ppl a crumb of inclusiveness. I hate race swapping with a passion and that's for any race not just white ppl. Or let's say they decided to make Mulan her Hispanic would there be an issue because it's still 'representation'. Ariel isn't about her race like someone said which is dumb to say, she's a great character in a interesting story. Disney is losing a lot of money because they have been going the woke route and only focus on that rather than creating good stories. I completely agree with you on your comments about the race of a character only being important when their race is integral to them. I think that this applies to both their life experience and the context that a world has set up. In terms of life experiences I would say that Luke Cage being black, or Shaft being black, are more integral to their characters due to their experience shaping their view of justice. Much more important than say Johnny Storm, particularly the one from the Fantastic 4 remake, who's only real reason to be white is that he is Sue Storm's brother, but adoption can account for anything like that, it changes nothing about the character. As for the context of the world it all just depends on what the author has built. Like complaining that there is a black actor in the Rings of Power is different from complaining about a black actor playing someone in New York City, for example. One is about concern for the lore of the world and the other makes very little sense to complain about unless you are a purist for the source material or you are probably racist in some way. A good example of people making weird race choices that violate the context would be in Gods of Egypt where half the cast of the gods were white people. You can make the argument of their being Egyptians that were very light skinned, but then get those people to play those roles. A good example of where the context and experiences permits the swapping of races would be in the Wheel of Time show. Though a fair amount of characters don't really match their race in the book they do live on a very ethnically diverse continent where many people travel between the countries. Experience wise, people aren't really judged based on their race and are judged more on where they are from, so their experiences aren't really impacted by their races. Like an Illianer would hate someone from Tear regardless of what shade they are, and vise versa. This is excepting the Aiel and the Sea Folk, who are very ethnically similar across the board. Even then there are some exceptions. That being said I still wish the Wheel of Time would have better writing. Final note is that despite her race meaning nothing to me, I haven't liked any of these live action remakes and I probably won't like this one either.

Nobody denies that there is racism in this type of rejection. But a large part of this rejection comes from the anger of the people for capitalizing on progressivism, the press praising these actions (any attempt at normalization disappears) and if someone does not agree, instead of debating the issue, we call it racism, micro-racism, etc. .. Changing the race of a white character has been done for decades, but if a pattern is repeated too much, it goes with blatant ideological propaganda, the actors involved insulting their audience if they complain, it is normal that there are those who deny it. this practice.

@@HelloMellowXVI Then why do people care if historically Black or Asian characters are played by White actors if the standards aren't the same the other way around? Because of what happened in the past ("white lead after white lead", as if it's impossible for people to create new stories specifically for POC or to create new stories based on African/Asian/Middle Eastern, etc mythology or fairy tales?), it's okay now for other races to play historically White characters but not for White people to play historically Black or Asian or whatever characters? You can say "Who the hell cares" if they change someone's race - but people OBVIOUSLY care if White people play characters that are usually another race or were written as another race, but no one's supposed to care if it's the other way around? It's not racist to care about the hypocrisy and it's WEAK to use that as an argument instead of just acknowledging the hypocrisy. It's not "racist" for people to think "Well, why is it okay for this to happen but not the other way around?" - We're supposed to be moving forward but acting like there's no hypocrisy and everyone who brings it up is a racist is moving backwards. @@LadyBeyondTheWall You sound dumb So let's use the historical context hmm. White people were playing living breathing people who actually existed in history like ancient Egyptians. We are talking about a creature that does not have a race and that's in folk lore from around the world including Africa i.e the Mami Wata, that have been in stores dating further than 4000 years back. If we want to use the "Danish" argument then let me stop you right there. Because if we are going to gatekeep and be picky about what should be accurate to the novel then there should be no half stepping. She shouldn't be a red head, she should die at the end, oh and the two popular songs of the movie, under the sea and kiss the girl, need to be removed since that poaches afro carribean beats/music. It is a ridiculous argument to begin with because at the end of the day the Disney cartoon, like most, are still going to be remembered and enjoyed more than their live adaptation counterparts a not because of the race of the characters which held no significance to the story. You still have the cartoon as a choice so stick with that. It's no different then when Brandy played Cinderella for the live tv adaptation of that story when didn't even receive a tenth of the hate this one is getting. I used to wonder why that was but I know it's because it wasn't pushed into mainstream and theaters where it could get more shine. Either way, to compare actual white washing of history to a fictional story is just gross.

I'll be one of the first people to agree that if race is not integral to the character, then it shouldn't matter what race the actor portraying the character is. With that said, I'm deeply disappointed that, arguably, the two most ICONIC redheads are replaced with black actresses - Ariel and MJ (from Spider-Man). Natural redheads don't have a lot of representation in media either (Max in Stranger Things being the most recent), and I just hate to see these two major examples be replaced. Again, there's nothing wrong with replacing traditionally white characters with black characters - just irritated that they had to do that with really the only two major redheads in pop culture.

My take is different, and not really based off your take or their take. My take comes from watching movies my whole life, there really isn't a movie I haven't seen, and any movie since 2015 has bored me. There is nothing creative about any of them, they all follow a cookie cutter cut out. The visuals in the newer movies are truly outstanding, but I never watched movies for that. I watched movies to see people act as characters. Every actor or actress today almost seems like the exact same person almost. Unless they have been around for a long time, but there is really no one that has that in your face personality that made movies so great in the first place, and what made them stand the test of time. Think of all the big stars of yester year and think of how unique they were. They all had character, today there is none, and find all these movies, to be just boring as a movie. To look at, as an art piece like a painting maybe a little different, but the stories have been all cookie cutter, you almost know exactly what the next line is going to be, or what is going to happen next. And, now they make too many remakes and not enough good originals, so what is going to happen in 10 years from now, are they going to have some new material, or are they just going to make remakes of the remakes for the rest of eternity. Maybe all the stories have been told, who knows. I personally don't like the race swapping, just for one reason and one reason only. To me, the story is not as important as the character driving the story. So again to me, when I took Creative Writing in college and we were on the subject of film and screenplays a good way to do something is create the character first. Anybody can tell a story, it's the character that sells it. And, you get specific and get highly detailed. These characters were already created. And, I usually agree with the other side about not supporting those movies, but watching this trailer, I kind of changed my mind a little bit. I kind of want to see this movie. And, I haven't said that about a movie since 2015, other than Ghostbusters. And I found that movie to be boring, but the throw back to older movies were great. It was almost worth it, to see the end. And I watched a lot of movies since 2015, and none really impressed me. The first Wonder Woman from I think 2015 was the last superhero movie I enjoyed. They have grown stale to me, and I wish to never see them again. At least for a couple of decades. This is the first time in a long time, that I have saw a movie or a trailer and believed they were that character. And this girl, feels and almost looks like Ariel. And, if they keep this movie, strictly The Little Mermaid, it will be one of the most amazing movies to come out, in a very long time. I am kind of excited. And, though I liked the cartoon, it wasn't one that I always wanted to watch. As a little boy, I wanted to watch... The Sword in the Stone Robin Hood Peter Pan Alice in Wonderland Pinocchio Pete's Dragon The Flight of the Navigator (not a cartoon) The Little Mermaid was loved by girls more but when it comes to these kind of animated films both girls and boys liked them. And if they can keep The Little Mermaid like the cartoon, one of Disney's best villains brought to life, is going to be amazing. I just wish Disney was a little more creative. And, we need better characters in our actors and actresses, we settle for mediocre, college drama level. edit.... What I am saying is, you have more character then todays actors. That is why people are watching you, and you don't have the fancy stuff like Hollywood. If you really think about that, why aren't you in movies. I watch a ton of reactors, to movies and music, that them just being themselves has more character then todays actors and actresses. It blows my mind.
