Help stress and anxiety with ancient strategies. ‪@DailyStoic‬, Ryan Holiday joins Dan Harris as they dig into the nuts and bolts of Stoicism with one of its best-known modern proponents.
Ryan Holiday is a prolific author, whose books include The Obstacle Is the Way, Ego Is the Enemy, and Discipline is Destiny. His newest book, Right Thing, Right Now, comes out in June, and is available for pre-order now. Ryan is also the host of the Daily Stoic Podcast.
In this episode we talk about:
- The history and theory of Stoicism, and some of its big names (including a former Vice Presidential candidate)
- Premeditatio Melorem, or thinking ahead to the worst possible outcome in order to avoid it
- Memento Mori, or being aware of the inevitability of one’s own death
- Amor Fati, or “loving one’s fate” as a path to acceptance of reality
- Journaling as a key Stoic practice, of talking to oneself on the page
- The four Stoic values: Courage, Temperance, Justice, Wisdom
- How Stoicism and Buddhism overlap - and how they don’t

Excellent conversation. I appreciate the silence between response and comment or question. That to me is natural mindfulness in facilitating the exchange in an effective way... and it is natural... Very cool Dan Harris... and wonderful to learn about stoics and all these Greek and Roman names... he is so fluent in that time period that it is exciting to learn and listen and be exposed to it. Thank so much for this!! Excellent work for me.... and for my enhancement... what I mean is: all the work done in this is excellent... but I may connect with some more than others... and I know that is natural.

An enjoyable episode. Nothing new (simply excerpts from wisdom literature). Mr. Holiday has made a lot of money marketing and borrowing from the past. It's interesting hearing from a non-academic, who still studies and does his homework. Personally, I enjoy listening to Mr. Harris. It's clear he has been college educated, and leveraged that into a career in journalism. I enjoy listening to and reading the works of journalists. They will do their due diligence. Something we don't see often (any more). Thanks for your time.

Dan, would you consider having Robert Wright on the podcast? He's very insightful, academic and logical and has a lot of experience with meditative techniques

So, if I got this correctly, this guy talks of arrogance as an "enemy" while purposefully mispronouncing Latin words, because he cannot be arsed to learn the proper pronounciation? He very intentionally doesn't use English terms, no he insists on Latin terms, but Latin terms he admittedly has no idea how to pronounce. Well, we across the Pond are having a field day with the proverbial US arrogance mixed with the well-known hypocrisy. I have to say, as a regular listener, some of the episodes are pure gold (any with Joseph and Jeff, obviously, but also Pascal Auclaire and Matthew Brensilver), whereas some, like this one, are more of a waste of time and effort. But, keep up the good work! I love the podcast!

@@Firuzeh Be real, girl! The guy's a buffoon! I didn't even touch upon his fascination with self-disfiguration in support of the US war propaganda.

I like a lot of stoicism, but the thing that kind of bothers me is when they say we can control our response to external events. I’m not sure that’s really true. A lot of that response comes from your reptile brain which you do not have conscious control over. Possibly overtime with some Stoic philosophy you can, change how the primordial brain looks at things. But I’m not sure the function should be on “controlling” our response. I’ve always been more interested in the eastern philosophy of acceptance, then control.
