Writer/director Makoto Shinkai’s latest fantasy anime Weathering With You is released in UK cinemas on Friday 17th January. His follow up to the widely revered Your Name tells the tale of teenage boy Hodaka who runs away to Tokyo and meets Hina, a girl with supernatural, weather changing powers.
Ahead of Weathering With You's release, we met with Shinkai at London’s St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel to discuss his film’s inception, production and challenges.

I personally against the idea of Your Name Hollywood remake. I feel like a masterpiece like Your Name should stay the way it is without a remake

I feel like none of Makoto Shinkai’s anime should be life action filmed, because there will be nothing special about the movie. His works are recognized by many not just because of their story lines but also because of the attention to small details on the location. The landscapes look so alive, its just unbelievable! Thank you Makoto Shinkai.

I dont know why many people hate the movie "Weathering with you" it was an ABSOLUTELY MASTERPIECE

The music and artwork were what made me shed tears. As an artist myself, that whole movie was nothing short of breathtaking. The rain animation, and the sunshine lighting up the buildings - quite literally everything felt just right. RADWIMPS are also the only band I can see working alongside Makoto, they just complement his style.

I loved Weathering With You in cinemas, best film I have ever seen ❤️ The whole audience was laughing, crying, having the best time. I even watched it in dub. Please watch it ❤️

I'm so thankful that he brought the movie to Indian cinemas. I remember I used watch anime on TV on 'Animax' channel, until they removed it in place of a stupid children's channel. There was no way to watch anime on TV and I had to watch it online. The moment I heard about the movie coming to cinemas. I told my parents I was going to college, but instead I skipped a day and traveled like two hours to the nearest cinema lol. That was so so worth it, the movie completely blew my mind. I knew I had to watch it no matter what. I again watched the movie a second time two days later in the same cinema, because it was just TOO GOOD > ~ < Makoto Shinkai's work is too amazing, I watched Your Name, and I knew I had to watch Weathering with you no matter what.

It was amazing to have the opportunity to watch Kimi no nawa and Weathering with you on the big screen. Appreciate everything you do for us Makoto Shinkai.
