Thanks for the support from everyone. I was lucky to hit Mexico before the complete lock down. Met a lot of distresses sailors on the way past Cuba. Neel 51

every time I see a Neel engine room, its a revelation, Watching cruisers work in tiny spaces, sweating and swearing, is fun for me, but not for them!

James, continue to appreciate all your videos as we are interested in being 51 owners someday. How in the world do you haul out a boat with a 29’ ft beam though!? Where we are most travelling cradles would max out at about 25. Interested to watch a video of a haul out next time you need to paint her!

James, glad to see you're alive and well!! I had some questions. What is the maximum speed you've been able to sail at? How much did you heel over approximately at that speed. Also you've mentioned in the comments section of other videos that your trimaran is very stable in a marina. What I would like to also know is how much do you roll in an anchorage, when there's a swell, compared to monohulls and cats. Thanks..

@carryonsailing 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, listen my view on speed is, what is important? The average speed is the key. Anyone can destroy a rig by pushing the boat hard. You don't want to do this for a blue water cruiser. I've manage over 20 knots for brief periods with surfing but the true test is when you have flat seas. Thus, I belive you could achieve about 12 knots average speed but you would be pushing the rig very hard. A good speed would be 9-10 knots and safer. The carbon rig makes little difference to performance also. Rolling isn't a problem. It's different but same comfort to a catamaran. In fact. As the bridge deck is higher, under way the neel 51 is more comfortable than cats I have sailed. So wiley sharp hasn't got a clue about trimarans, that is my view.

@@carryonsailing thanks a lot for the detailed response. Wiley Sharp's statement that a trimaran has the disadvantages of both monos and cats, isn't really true. It can also be said that a trimaran, has the advantages of both cats and monos. It depends on how you see it, glass half empty or half full. He's a cat salesman and thus spoke as per the requirements of his job. So I would take his opinion on trimarans with a pinch of salt. My questions aren't influenced by him. While there are a lot of cruising channels sailing their cats and monos, there's hardly any for trimarans, especially those in the liveaboard category. You and SailOceans are the only ones I could find. For some unfathomable reason SailOceans have disabled comments on their channel. So I can only ask these questions from you. I agree completely with your observations regarding speed and comfort on passage. Could you tell me the most you heel on passage approximately. 5/10/15°? Also from your videos and those of SailOceans, your trimarans seem remarkably stable at anchor. But since most videos have been taken in good conditions, so I would also like to know the stability at anchor when there's a swell, comparative to monos and cats, in terms of sway, roll etc. Thanks again.

Have a look at my Instagram videos. You'll see villasmius, that day had 60 knot winds. It's very stable. Usually no more than 5 degrees. It's extremely comfortable buddy. Really not an issue. The fact that it does heel a little is a good safety feature for when you need to reef. You feel it.

Hey James. Wanted to ask about how the hull and fittings are holding up. I'm sure you are aware that there is no shortage of videos on youtube commenting on Neel's build quality. Have any issues of quality control come up since owning your ship (delamination, broken fittings etc)?
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 4 жыл бұрын
Jason hi, not really anything major. As the boat is hand built I had some frustrating lapses. Quality control could do with more focus. But all that stuff you should be able to fix yourself if your an able Seaman. So my advice. Go ahead of your thinking of buying but make sure you have a good surveyor or agent oversee the mould process if you are worried. BTW it helps when you don't put two jet skis on the stern of a 45....that explains a lot about what you watched on other videos.

Hey James, glad to see you're doing well and made it safely. Had you given any thought to go completely electric for your propulsion? I imagine your ship having advantageous deck area for solar panels, plus with your high average sailing speeds, regeneration is an option for you.
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 4 жыл бұрын
I would advise against it for a blue water ship. Fine if you're coastal. The problem will arise when you get a few days of zero wind. Particularly when you cross intercontinental convergence zones where there are long periods of doldrums. Sometimes you can run the engine for 24 hours. Also, if in dangerous leeshore scenario. Engine is very useful if not critical.

Hi Jason, I’ll be the first Neel51 with electric motor set-up, the boat has been delayed because of Covid but is expected in September. Technical studies are terminated so feel free to ask any question. I will have two DC generators capable of handling the motors directly in case of long time needs as James smartly mentioned. One of the big interest to me is the ability to generate electricity while sailing, in a very effective way. Only the real life experience will tell how many time we’ll have to run the generator.

Hi Philip. Very interesting indeed. I hope. My views don't offend. But I admire your approach

James, certainly not offended ! These kind of modifications have to be carefully thought and done together with some good specialists and with the green light from the shipyard as it involves structural modifications. I am supported by a very good team but still consider it as a test, a kind of prototype with full responsibility. That’s a risk I am keen to assume and which gives me lot of sense and curiosity. The Neel 51 is a dream boat for that kind of project thanks to it’s light displacement, good average speed even in light airs and the huge ‘machinery’ room where it’s easy to adapt and install this kind of ‘prototype’ setup. I have chosen to go for two small’ 48vDC generators (11kw each), 30kWh battery bank and two 15kw 48V electric motor, with servoprop sail drives to get the best of hydrogeneration. I expect producing close to 5000w/h sailing at cruising speed.

@@philippebaudet6124 Hey Phillip. Interesting setup. Couple of questions, why two small dc generators, would one larger one not be more efficient? Would a larger battery bank not be better when encountering conditions that James mentioned? My thoughts were that with enough reserve energy stored in the battery banks, you would be able to run a lot of ancillary accesories (read airconditioning) whilst under sail, assisted by hydroregen and solar
