This pelvic floor relaxation stretching routine includes breathing exercises and stretching for the muscles that are associated with pelvic floor spasm and pelvic pain.
How to Relax Your Pelvic Floor Muscles
Equipment:
• 2 large cushions or pillows for hip support
• 1 pillow or cushion for head and neck comfort
Set up for pelvic stretches:
• Wear warm comfortable clothes
• Choose a quiet area
• Ensure the room temperature is comfortable and warm
• Turn off your phone
• Lie down with a cushion under each thigh
• Allowing your thighs to relax and roll outwards
Deep Breathing Exercises
Deep breathing exercises can help you relax muscle tension, including pelvic floor muscles.
Diaphragmatic breathing relaxes the abdominal wall during the in breath. The pelvic floor muscles relax when the abdominal wall relaxes (1).When you breathe in deeply your abdominal wall moves outwards and your pelvic floor muscles relax.
You may find it beneficial to practice diaphragmatic breathing at the outset and conclusion of your pelvic floor relaxation stretches.
Stretching Muscles Related to the Hips and Pelvis
Pelvic floor muscle spasm can be associated with tight pelvic muscles that surround the pelvis (2)
Muscles outside the pelvis to stretch to promote overall recovery include:
• Hamstrings
• Buttocks
• Inner thighs
• Front of hips
• Lower abdominals
• Lower back
Your stretches should be gentle and pain free so that you avoid tensing in response to stretching. Your muscles stretch best when they're warmed up so it's useful to have a warm bath or take short walk before stretching.
Pelvic Floor Relaxation
Practicing pelvic floor relaxation practice is part of physical therapy treatment for pelvic floor spasm.
Start practicing lying down and when your skill improves, progress to sitting and standing. Try to relax your pelvic floor muscles when you feel tense or nervous. Combine this practice with your relaxed deep breathing.

Thank you!!! This is the most wonderful video I have found. Your voice is soft and soothing. Instruction of relaxing the muscles communicates so well to my brain. There is no rush which gives me time to complete the breathing and relaxing. Your use of positive words instead of negative makes this an all around beneficial pelvic floor healing video.

Hi Michelle, I wanted to drop a quick note to thank you for making this information accessible on the web! I was diagnosed with a very tight pelvic floor almost 7 years ago and it used to be so, so difficult to find pelvic floor exercises and relaxation information online. Incredibly helpful to have access to this without having to pay for pricey PT specialist appointments with providers who are too far and few between!

Hi Michelle, thank you for making these videos! I'm excited to try some of them. May I ask if you ever work with patients with interstitial cystitis? I got diagnosed with this by my family doctor about a year ago. My case seems pretty mild and is helped a lot by diet changes and aloe vera supplements, but I'd love to find some exercise that will either help my condition or at least help me build strength without aggravating it. I know you've made a dvd for pelvic exercises, would you feel it was appropriate for an IC patient? Thank you, if you're able to reply.

Hi Susan, are you interested in doing general exercises that are safe for your pelvic floor or Kegel exercises? You can probably do both, you will need to make sure that you can completely relax your pelvic floor muscles before starting Kegels just in case you have some pelvic floor muscle spasm. Yes I have a couple of DVDs for pelvic floor friendly exercises for women to help exercise without aggravating pelvic pain and this includes IC. Hope this helps, all the best

Michelle, your soft voice touches my mind. I am 30 (male). Having feeling of heaviness on both thighs for more than 5 years, and now having testicular discomfort or heaviness for more than 5 months. I saw urologist and physical medicine doctor, but got no relief. Suggest me something, plzzzz.

Do you feel the discomfort IN the actual testicular area or does it feel more like it’s in the surrounding areas kind of “pulling”on them?

Did this go away? I'm having the same issue, been to many doctors and specialists, tested for STD and UTI. All negative and I have a lot of pain in my testies and junk. Trying to determine what the cause is

Thank you, thank you. I have a dysfunctional pelvic floor (tight) and this video is my routine every day. I noted that the sound at the end of the video is missing. Is it possible to fix this problem? To listen your soft voice helps a lot. We live in a world that everything has to be done fast and to have these type of routines make a deep difference. Boys also should have this video in mind. I try to explain to my husband but not much success so far.

Hi, I am struggling to find exercises to help my hip pain, without aggravating my precarious uterus. I've had hip problems for 20 years, used to do yoga for my hip and lower back, but experienced a urethocele (and maybe mild cystocele) prolapse last autumn. I stopped all types of exercise. I've been recieving treatment and my urethrocele has improved, but my uterus is now precarious...and now my hip is seizing up too. I'm think my hip and prolapses are tightly connected and have a see saw effect going on. Are these exercises gentle enough to help my hip without upsetting my pelvic organs? Other I've done are too intense.

Can i do kegel exercise even i have tight pelvic muscle..... After my delivery, often i hav constipation problem , can't hold urine for sometime.... Is it because tight pelvic floor muscles

This is such a well rounded list of relaxation stress for the pelvis and pelvic floor. Wonderful for stress related pelvic pain, chronic pain and Post traumatic syndrome. I think people can even do this on a heating pad. I have similar topic video, welcome to check them out.

@@michellephysio hi, I have been through hipec surgery for ovarian cancer and just completed 45 days, and now I am going through chemos . So my nerves are weak and body pains . Just wanted to ask if you have strengthing exercises which i could do after 3 months of my full recovery from surgery. Thankyou
