Dear hobbiton piper I am a relativity new pipe smoker. I live in Hampshire UK. I am a sheep farmer. And today was a verys tressful day at work. I came home, had some supper, and now am sitting outside in the garden with my pipe.... I just wanted to say. Your comments on this video really resonated with me. Thank you.

Excellent words of advice for new and veteran pipers alike. The old saying was it takes at least 4oz in the same pipe to start to know a blend. I think there's a lot of wisdom in that idea. I've found most blends I end up loving are subtle and it takes time to discover everything they have to offer. The ones I like immediately rarely make the cut. Capstan Blue (and gold but that's a story for another day) was something I smoked a fair amount in the late 80's before I switched to McClelland only. When MB resurrected it in 2013 I bought a hoard of tins and thought blue was good but not close to what it was back in the day. Thanks to you I've recently tried it again and thoroughly enjoyed my old tins of Capstan Blue which have aged exceptionally well. I even restocked the ole cellar with many new tins. I wish I still had tins of Blue from the 80's as they are selling for big money these days but back then cellaring tobacco just wasn't a thing.

Subtle blends can be so very special, but always take time to understand thanks to that subtlety. Maybe we will stumble onto some old Capstan Blue someday!

Everytime I revisit Dorchester I'm blown away by how consistently good it is. I always have a wonderful baseline of sweet, nutty and earthy but every other bowl I'll find floral nuances in it and I love that. The more I smoke it the better I learn it

I've learned based on the handful of blends I've tried, to spend some time with a blend for a while before deciding what I think. I was really looking forward to C&D Daylight. And at first, didn't like the tin note. And the first smoke tasted minty, which was weird. First and only blend so far I've had with Oriental leaf. But I let it air out for a while and tried again a couple of days later, and it was and still is amazing!

Hi Kevin! I hope you're having a great week. Mine has been a bit rough but tonight i finally have a few minutes to myself. I'm enjoying a lovely first bowl of Boswell's English Biscuit in my MM Bent Boone cob. It is listed as an English on their site. I'm getting really nice cocoa flavors, a bit of camp fire from the Lat, and just genuinely enjoying this blend. On the retro-hale I think i'm getting baking spices. I'm going to have to sit with this a while longer to distinguish all the flavors. I may be falling into the "this is amazing trap", but this first bowl is def 🔥

Absolutely! For me, it was Molto Dolce. Just about threw it away after my first smoke. Too sweet, too goopy....couldn't stomach it. But, after some dry time and a half dozen other smokes, I've really come to appreciate it as a fantastic dessert blend. Great video as always - Cheers from Michigan ✌️

It really is true that it can take several smokes, if not a whole tin worth, to really develop a solid understanding of all the nuances of a blend and whether or not you like it. I've had quite a few blends that initially blew me away with how good I thought they were, but after returning to them a few more times I started noticing more characteristics of the smoke that I didn't notice at first and maybe didn't care so much for. Conversely, the very first time I smoked what might be my #1 favorite blend now-Cornell & Diehl's Autumn Evening-I hated it so much that I dumped the bowl out halfway through and nearly threw the whole tin in the trash. Thankfully I cellared it in a Ball jar instead of throwing it out, and when the flavor of it kept lingering on my brain a couple weeks later I decided to try it again... and then again, and again, and kept liking it more and more each time. Now two tins later, if I'm being perfectly honest with myself, Autumn Evening is probably my favorite smoke.

I splurged on a 4oz tin of Plum Pudding Special Reserve 35$ (2022 package date) the tin was amazing, blew my socks off. I thought I had found the holy grail of leaf! When I saw it again for 35% off I went hog wild and bought about 7 tins 1/11/23 pack date. Earth shaking batch variance, not un-smokeable but a hard pass if given a sample, I quickly realized why they were on sale.... over a year later now and still can't bring myself to chance another purchase (which by this time would obviously be a different lot) LOL The power of disappointment. I didn't like moontrance at all when I smoked it the first few times, but I started to slow down my puffing and was then able to taste it more I started to appreciate the deep vanilla and bourbon. Also, I smoked on windy days which made the aromatic experience not as enjoyable when I first smoked it. Your palate might also be use to the latakia blends and smoking the sweeter lighter blends falls flat until your palate adjust to the more mellow sweet flavors

Hey Kevin, great to see your video. This is a very interesting topic. I think that one could say that tobacco blends can be judged too quickly. Some I've judged to love too quickly. Some I've judged to not care for too quickly. I think I'm more guilty of the former more often than the latter. I think in some instances age on the tobacco does change how you might feel about it. Sansepulcro did improve once it aged. I also added a little cognac too it. I just didn't care for it initially. To be honest, I wouldn't buy any more of it. But age did improve it. On the other hand some of the C & D aromatics I fell in love with. But then my tastes changed to preferring a Virginia. Good to see you, always love these videos.

Hi Kevin. I have enjoyed a bowl of Peterson Flake whilst watching your video, and as luck would have it, your sentiments have rung true. I have had some great smokes with it and some not so good. Turns out that packing it right has made all the difference. Capstan is hard to get in the UK, but we are blessed with alternatives and Peterson Flake is for me a worthy contender that I enjoy tremendously. It has only taken me a little over 40 years to nail pipe smoking. That's the fun in chasing the Nirvana smoke. Regards, John.

I have judged a blend too quickly and later found out that I liked it way more than I first thought. But I must say, my tastes in tobacco seems to always be changing. I've also found that some blends do smoke better in certain shape pipe, and others just need a certain size bowl.

Two blends have made me realize I should always give a blend a handful of smokes before deciding. Those blends are Half & Half and Dunhill/Peterson Elizabethan Mixture. I hated both blends the first several smokes, but kept giving them a chance. I now have around 5 pounds of Half & Half and around 20 tins of Elizabethan Mixture stored away to be sure I don't run out anytime soon.

I agree with pretty much all you said. Something I pleasantly found out lately, is some of the blends I didn't like all that much at first, after I jarred them up and going back to after a few months or years seemed to really shine. Some had Virginia but some were dark fired forward blends that either mellowed or sweetened with age. Good thing too, because I had bought several of a few of them. Hate to waste potentially good tobacco.

Saved your video until the quiet part of my day. The title of the video prompted the to go through my discard box. S Gawith chocolate flake. I was amazed at how many nuances I was able to discover. Bready sweetness, a touch of Lakeland, A touch of chocolate and a little cinnamon spice. The nic hit is a bit more than I prefer but very enjoyable when savored slowly. Have to reexamine the others in the lowly discard box.

I generally don't make a final decision until after 2 ounces. I once bought a tin of C&D's Crosseyed Cricket, a crossover Aromatic/Latakia blend which I loved at the start but the more bowls I smoked, the more I began to not like the Rum punch flavor and the heavy ghosting it did to my pipes. The only blend I ever threw out halfway through my first bowl was Paladin Cherry.
@hobbitonpiper

Smoking a full 2 ounces will tell you a lot…not the whole story with more nuanced blends, but certainly enough to decide if you’d like to continue the journey with it or not. :) Yeah, I’ve had a couple of blends like your Paladin Cherry experience too! :)

So, this is an interesting approach. I know folk who smoke three tins before commenting. I rate a blend with the first or second bowlful using a seven- point system. Since I limit myself to one-two pipes a day it would take too long to get to a conclusion. Of course i also go back and try the blend again with hopes it will rise up in the ratings. In truth most do not. For me this goes to what I like and do not like. I’ve got well over 120 unique blends and have ‘classic’ versions of all categories. If you have three excellent straight Virginias then you know what an excellent straight Virginia (on your taste buds) ‘should’ taste like. At this point I can taste a full vs medium vs light English. There are Aromatics that are spot on in what they intend to deliver but are too sweet for me (Cult Blood Moon) but others that are perfect (Autumn Evening, Connoisseurs Choice, Burley Morning Pipe). I live with flexibility but also don’t want to smoke stuff I don’t really like.
@hobbitonpiper
@hobbitonpiper 8 ай бұрын
Some blends are relatively simple, and could be “rated” quickly. But if I had judged the exceptional, nuanced Capstan Blue for example after a couple of bowls, that would have been a true misjudgment. There are some blends that to truly “know” them takes significant time, for me anyway, and if I had judged them too soon I would have really missed out on some of the best nirvana smokes of my life.

Very good channel by the way, and I'm happy to know you don't mind questions, because I have one for you. I definitely like capstan blue a fair bit, and I would say it differentiates itself from other Virginia's to be a must try for sure, although it tastes to me more heavily topped than a lot of Virginia's. However, I've never tried capstan yellow. How would you compare the 2, and which do you prefer? Also, would you consider it enough different from other light Virginia's such as golden sliced or similar to make it a must try as well? Thanks again!

Hi Eric! I absolutely think all of the blends you mentioned are must tries and are all different and amazing in their own right. I’ve reviewed them all and discussed differences in those videos so I will refer you to my Pipe Tobacco Reviews playlist for my full thoughts. I have a small number of blends that I call "ashtray smokes" . . . or taste like I loaded up a bowl full of cigarette ash--ha. I keep giving 'em more chances to see if maybe I just didn't get it or didn't clean the pipe properly, but my first impression usually sticks. And then I've got one blend that has a patchouli-like incense stick quality. That one stays on the shelf.

So... some years ago a friend offered me a bowl of his mildest in a clean pipe, me being a non smoker. I smoked it easily and enjoyed it quite a bit. But, when I woke up the next morning, I could still taste stale ash on my tongue. So, I walked away from the pipe and stayed away. But, pipe smoking is an idea that hasn't gone away. So, I'll try it again, very likely a churchwarden with something mild. Any ideas? Anything I should avoid like the plague? 😊 Thank you !
@hobbitonpiper
@hobbitonpiper 9 ай бұрын
Still tasting something the next morning is very common for beginners, much like most beginners still taste a cigar the next morning. That ceases to happen over time. If you’re not wanting to experience that as much then I’d avoid blends with Latakia in it for now (it’s a very pungent, smoky component). And always, sip the pipe slow. You’re here for relaxation and flavor, not a bonfire in your mouth.
