I recently switched from a stick that came up to around my mouth to a stick that reaches to just under my collar bone on skates. I play more of a finesse, offensive style of hockey and I had heard that a shorter stick would be better for dangling, so I made the switch. What I didn't expect was that my shooting actually improved as well, because, as you mentioned, longer stick generally means more power, so I figured I was sacrificing some goal-scoring ability from farther out. I don't know if my shot is necessarily harder, but because I'm using a shorter stick, my body is in more of a natural shooting position as I'm skating (ie more bend in the knees, lower hand closer to the blade of the stick, etc), so I find that I can get a good, technically sound shot off much more quickly without having to adjust my hands/body, compared to when I used a longer stick, which caused me to have less bend in my knees and have the puck further from my body when I shot. Its also worth mentioning that I feel much stronger on the puck in the corners and off face-offs, again, because the shortness of the hockey stick is causing me to play with my body lower to the ice. Anyway, awesome videos, keep up the good work!

ctebbe87 I am 6'3 260 and a center/defense. Everyone INSISTED that I use a stick up to my chin. So I DID. my blade was almost a body length away from me, and people were literally scooting the puck off my blade and poke checking EASILY. I looked online and found a tip that said you should wear skates, let your hands hang at your side, and see what the blade does, and try and make sure it can lay flat on the ice. The shaft end was on the ice with my blade off the ice. I made a mark where my pinky would be if I gripped the stick with my whole hand so the blade was flat on the ice, cut it down, tapped up and it was a bazillion times better. I even dangled on someone just goofing around. It puts your top hand right in front of you as well. I guess its IT'S ALL PREFFERENCE. Thanks so much to Coach Jeremy. He CONSTANTLY stresses that almost everything in Hockey, aside from some core fundamentals, is prefference.

Another great video with some great advice. I always found for me that my preferred stick length would always vary. Depending on how I was playing, if I was scoring and how the puck felt on my stick. Proper stick length is SO important to having confidence with the puck. So figure it out however you need and don't be afraid to make adjustments.

coming from someone who has played for over 10 years now, let him find what he likes. a lot of players i’m around like a shorter stick with a larger curve like P92 (matthews). i have tended to like a longer stick with P88 which is a much flatter curve made for passing, which has always been my strong suit (i was also defense for like 6/7 years but play everywhere). i’ve tried a wide variety of tape jobs, stick lengths, curves, etc. and since he’s just starting, for future reference let him try a variety. also.. good luck with the price 😉

Great video. Three things you might add regarding pros and cons that I think should be considered: 1. shorter stick is harder for someone checking you as there is less leverage and you tend to have more weight on your stick as you are leaning over more. 2. Shorter stick allows you to tuck your top hand in to keep the defender from behind from tapping your hand to destabilize your stick handling. 3. shorter stick lowers your position and makes it harder to keep your head up while stick handling and also lowers your visibility to find your open teammates. I am an older rec hockey player and I still play around a bit with the length but typically end up just a tickle above the chin. It seems when I observe the young up and comers their sticks are getting longer and longer and they are doing just fine -especially against this old fart.

Depending on the lie, length, and shape of blade...measuring with the chin/nose method can result in different lengths of stick. I like the method you describe towards the end of the video, as you can feel where your length needs/wants to be. It also addresses the variations of blade lie. I measure from the heel to butt, using a measuring tape. It happens that it is about the same as the distance from one finger tip to center of other elbow, measuring with arms out across the chest. Note that I use a short stick.

Jeremy, I bought a total one nxg a month ago and I can say that its one of the best sticks I've ever had. But the thing is its 74 flex so I'm starting to fan on it a lot as I get stronger. So , should I cut it down to get a stiffer flex? I don't really know how it would affect me shooting and crashing the net because I'm more of a power forward so overall what would you recommend? Also I play peewee AAA if that means anything

Jeremy, I'm 5'7 tall, weight around 115 pounds.. and I heard from other video that the right stick flex for a player is the flex should be half of my weight. Therefore, 50 flex stick is the right for me? which is a short stick.. And in your video, you said that shorter stick doesn't generate alot of power because of the flex.. I like to play as defenceman, so I use longer stick with 85 flex which is above half of my weight, and I find it hard to flex BECAUSE MAYBE I'm not over 160 pounds.. But there are times I rarely able to flex it with a slapshot and snapshot which I can see the puck flys off really quick.. So which stick is right for me to use? the shorter 50 flex? or should I stick with my longer 85 flex stick?

Hi Jeremy! I recently got a new stick from an off season clearance, and ive been practising my shots with it for some time now. Its a tad too long to me without skates, but im worried about cutting it as it will be too short for me when im on skates later when the season starts. Should i just cut it, and add an extension once i get on skates, or should i get another maybe cheaper stick for off the ice training? Also, if i end up buying a cheaper stick for off the ice training, should i get a stiffer or whippier flex than i have now? (77) If i get another 77 flex and i cut it, it will be stiffer (87), or i could buy and INT stick which is already shorter but whippier (67) Ive just started hockey so not alot experience with different sticks

Try to make your "practice" stick as similar to your "game" stick as possible, this way your motions are the same either way. If you're practicing outside on asphalt or concrete, use a similar but cheaper stick in the line or a training accessory like the Hockey Wraparound. It forms a shield around your blade so you don't damage your expensive stick.

Thanks for the vid Jeremy, it's been very helpfull ! I'm about to buy a new stick and still have doubts on the flex, I'm 35 and wight 85 kilos, acording to tipical rules I should use a 85 flex stick, the problem is that I started playing hockey about a year ago and I still have some trouble flexing the stick, Do you think It'd be better to buy an intermediate 65 flex stick until I have better technique and more power ? thanks !

You should get a 65 flex until you develope the proper skills. I started with a wimpy 40 flex and over the course of 3 years I now use a 65 flex. I am 12 and it still gives me trouble but its not about weight or muscle its more about the proper technique.

They are both important. If you have a stick that is too long or short, or a stick that is too whippy or stiff it can throw off your game. Try different manufacturer's if you need to, you'll find the right spec. It's hard to balance the flex and height of a stick. Sometimes you're in between a manufacturer's specs and are forced to compromise.
