The big problem in this movie for me, personally, is the fact that they made the "bandits", Pam and Jeff, more sympathetic and relatable than the "protagonist", Max, that you end up rooting for THEM instead of him. Unlike the villains from the other movies, Pam and Jeff were just trying to get a doll, which was THEIRS to begin with, in order to sell it just so that their kids can have a place to live. As a result of this, when I see them get tortured by the traps, I can't find it funny. It's like with Plankton in One Coarse Meal. Mr. Krabs torturing Plankton is unfunny, as he DOES IT EVEN WHEN PLANKTON STOPS STEALING THE FORMULA. The fact is, watching a character get tortured is unfunny if they didn't completely deserve it. At least in the previous films the bandits/terrorists were clearly trying to steal valuables that weren't theirs, but this film attempts to make the bandits sympathetic in a half-assed attempt to make some sort of "it's all about family" message, which it fails to do...

Precisely, it was funny seeing Harry and Marv get hurt, since they were clearly up to no good. But Pam and Jeff were simply a nice couple who were only trying to save their house, and seeing them get hurt is just sad, not funny. Well I am still glad or should I say thankful they made the second film Lost in New York because I like that one much more than the first one. The first one I just can’t get into because of how mean-spirited the family is towards Kevin (well, except for the dad. He’s cool in my book). The second film wisely gets rid of that mean spiritedness and is something I can easily watch again and again during the holidays whereas for the first film, I’m only going to be watching for the traps and Old Man Marley’s scenes and that’s it.

Did she ever try to help Kevin calm down or realize that just because his brothers and sisters and cousin don’t treat him very nicely that that doesn’t mean he’s loved less by the family? No. And what was her response when Kevin told her he thought his family stunk, “Well, maybe this year you should ask Santa for a new family.” 🤦‍♂️ She made things even worse. And when she rebukes Kevin’s reply, she hypocritically says, “You don’t mean that?” when what she previously said before was just as mean-spirited. For a film with a simple concept of “What if a kid would be accidentally left behind by his family during Christmas vacation and had to fend his house from burglars”, it didn’t have to be so mean-spirited.

Keep the idea the same, where they mistake the kid taking the expensive doll. Then the greedy siblings storm the house as the kid stops them. Be funnier atleast, and you won't feel bad when the greedy siblings get hurt by the traps. Be clichéd of course. But way better than feeling bad throughout the movie.

Slapstick needs you to feel the victims deserve what they get if it’s very violent. Harry and Marv physically threaten Kevin and rob houses, trying to steal from money meant for charity for children in the sequel. While the sequel pratfalls do go a tad overboard in how violent they are (a brick to the head thrown from a tall height would minimum put you in hospital for concussion), the Wet Bandits deserve being pushed around and humiliated.

The big issue A LOT OF PEOPLE had with this movie is that in making the "Bandits" sympathetic characters you don't want to see anything bad happen to them. In the other movies the bandits are actual bad guys who even threaten the kid in the movie but in this movie the kid is never in any real danger they really just want a doll that was theirs to begin with, so it's not fun to watch them get tortured. Also the Home Alone movies haven't really been popular since they started changing the cast in the 3rd one. I have no idea why they keep making them when the franchise hasn't been successful since Home Alone 2. Every movie since Home Alone 3 has been a flop and that's just because no one was interested in seeing the movie remade with a different cast. At least with those movies though, I guess if you never seen the original and didn't have any attachment to those actors as those characters then the sequels are fine... I guess. But Home Alone 6 just ruins it by making Home Alone with no actual villains in the story. They're just torturing a couple innocent people for no reason. What are they going to do in the next movie, make the kid set up death traps knowing full well he's not in any danger just cause he doesn't want a babysitter? I wouldn't be surprised if that ended up being the next movie, kid tortures babysitter to prove he can protect himself home alone and not only does some innocent babysitter get tortured just for trying to do their job, but the kid gets rewarded in the end for destroying the house and trying to kill his babysitter. Sounds like a plausible sequel at this point. Would be terrible and yet they keep making them... for some reason. You want to make a good sequel, how about Adult Kevin runs a Home Security business Harry and Marv from the first movie are known to have escaped prison again, and Kevin is so confident in his home security system that he leaves his own son home alone knowing full well that Harry and Marv are out looking for him. They find out where Adult Kevin lives, the security system goes off setting off the usual traps but since it's a more high tech system set up by Adult Kevin the kid doesn't even have do anything but monitor some security cameras and press a few buttons to set off the traps when needed. Assuming you can't get the original actors for the Sticky/Wet bandits just write it so they're too old to do this kind of work themselves anymore and hired some younger guys they met in prison to target Kevin. Still do the thing where Kevin just routinely leaves his son home alone because he's so confident in his high tech security system that he feels his child is protected even when no one is there to watch him. We could even see Adult Kevin building and installing the different parts to the security system in a time lapse at the beginning of the movie. That would feel more like a proper sequel to the original movies making it more about Kevin and feeling like a natural progression of his character than to just randomly have a bunch of Kevin clones running around.

I wanna see a Home Alone 7 where it’s about grown up Kevin and Marv, played once again by Macaulay Culkin and Daniel Stern, Marv has gone on to become a very troubled man suffering from severe PTSD from all the traps he was subjected to in the previous movie, he also reveals that Harry had the same problem but tried to numb the pain using drugs and eventually died from an overdose 20 years ago, and when he goes to seek therapy it turns out Kevin is his therapist and it’s ironically a movie with no slapstick whatsoever and is actually a slow paced drama in which the 2 of them, throughout all of their therapy sessions find out more about each other and grow a close friendship, almost like a Home Alone version of Good Will Hunting

The biggest mistakes of this movie were: 1. Making the ‘bandits’ sympathetic in this movie. Nobody is going to see a pair who are trying desperately to save their home so that their kid doesn’t have to spend Christmas on the streets and think ‘these are guys I wanna see get tortured for 15 minutes’. Its just not possible. Nobody is gonna think they deserve it. Which is only compounded with the second mistake. 2. Making the injuries as a result of the traps as realistic as they were. One of the reasons Home Alone is so funny is *because* the wet bandits have superhuman durability. The worst they get is some redness from Harry’s burn on his head, or the marks from Marv’s face, as well as pained groans. Its funny cause a) they deserve it and b) cause they seemingly bounce back with minor injury and are still vile enough to enjoy them being tortured. It is NOT funny to see the woman’s feet be realistically blackened and blistered and have her LIMPING through the rest of the movie (especially since followup traps ALL target her feet, like getting a weight dropped on them and legos) it is NOT funny to see the guy have that massive egg on his face after he’d s hit with a billiard ball. And it is ESPECIALLY NOT FUNNY to see them reduced to tears, begging for mercy, and asking ‘why is he doing this to us’. This may surprise you, makers of this movie, but we didn’t like the original simply cause we like seeing people get hurt.

I will say, I kinda agree. I didn't like Home Sweet Home Alone, but I easily thought Home Alones 3, 4, and 5 were WAY worse. This actually had some good physical gags, adult Buzz makes too much sense, and I can't believe they actually found a good reason for why the parents couldn't be contacted in 2021: yes, he has no cell phone, and Buzz thinks it's a prank call, but another thing you missed was that the boy was worried his mom would be arrested for child neglect and so he made a CHOICE to not contact the police. Again, the bad stuff sticks out too much for me to like this film, but Home Sweet Home Alone actually wasn't... well... THAT bad. Still bad, but not THAT bad.

Home Alone 6, where the entire (surviving) cast of the first film is back, with Kevin having grown distant from his family after the way they treated him (leaving him behind twice for example), only for them to want to surprise him for the holidays with a big family reunion. The result is Kevin in his home as his entire extended family try to break in to spend the holidays with him, while Kevin has no idea and thinks he's under attack because 'he's the famous kid who fought off the Wet Bandits not once, but twice'.
